I recommend the 20w or 40w for maximum plywood cutting. The 10w can do engraving well, but not thick cutting.

Thanks Darren! I just got some black acrylic and am trying to get my hands on some steel (besides rulers and saw blades). Got any specific ideas? Also I have the new blue laser to try for those metals (but have zero experience - so everyone will benefit from my learning curve 😝) My previous review of the d1 I did some other materials like leather, but not metal.

@@wittworks : Im looking at buying a D1 pro and want to find out which laser to buy and want to no what the standard 20W laser scope can do with cutting and engraving ( as you have shown in the last video)as opposed to what scope the new blue laser has and what materials and operations they are best suited too . I want to both cut and engrave softwood timbers and also would like to be able to engrave and cut acrylics and engrave stainless steel tags if the laser type allows.Wanted to go for the extension rails and air assist unit which seems essential. Absolutely love your impartial comments and have subscribed and will be watching any follow up videos you post. Keep them coming if you have time.

Thank you Spencer. I haven’t used the S10. It’s been offered to me, but, I don’t have the time or space to review every laser out there 🤭 What are you going to use it for mostly? Given the three I have, I still think xtool is the premiere in the category and you can’t go wrong. What is intriguing to you about the s10? Price? I have a comgrow z1 that I’m reviewing soon that looks very similar and is cheaper. It’s decent. I would say, once you go 20w, it’s hard to go back to the 10. I have two 10w units and I use the 20w exclusively. Even if I don’t need all the power, I can increase the power and increase the speed, which gives me a fast run and an output similar to 10w on slower speeds. That said, nothing bad with 10.

I returned recently my xtool 20w pro. It didn’t cut colour acrylic and tried so many times to get the engraving to work also. The smell of acrylic burning is so toxic it gave me a headache. I had to sometimes run a 5 pass to get it to cut the 3mm acrylic and you could really see and smell the burnt melted acrylic. Might be an ok machine but definitely not for cutting and engraving acrylic.

Air assist is really of value during cutting operations as it keeps the kerf clean. The key for clean engravings is a mixture of very, very, light air assist (just enough to keep your lens clean), and lots of exhaust air. When you engrave you want the soot to rise and then be carried away by your exhaust air as quick as possible before it settles back down on your work. With these open frame lasers this is difficult to accomplish. An enclosure with an exhaust fan will help keep your engravings cleaner.

Good Review. I'm not even thinking anything under 20Watts. I really rather max power. Wish Xtool had the quad 40Watt! The issue is, the bed is tool small to justify it. @@wittworks KZfaq... drives me nuts. I click away from my reply and it's gone! Thanks for reply! Extension table will be a must. Bigger is just smart. After some research, I'm seeing the old 'the right tool for the job' applies. Too many are expecting laser diodes to replace cutters. Not what they are made for. They can do it, but makes no sense if you are cutting anything thicker than 1/8- to maybe 1/4" material. Love to see the 50w co2. My personal view is, smaller 20W diode with all the accessories, and then invest in a good table top cnc for the big stuff(stepcraft). Two purpose designed and built tools will in the end, be a smarter investment with many more options. Stepcraft cnc offers a laser head option at a very reasonable price. The Xtool is really to learn on. I'm always about buying the best tool I can afford with the best life expectance. 1500 budget for laser system, 2500 budget for cnc. 1000 budget for any add-ons are if I need to spend a little more to get a better system. I'm amazed how cheap cnc and laser is compared to just 3 years ago! 5k for a modern engraving and fabrication hobby shop? Heck, for another 800, I can throw in a festool track saw system and do just about anything! It's insane!

@@wittworks Unless I'm missing something, looks like Shapoko would be limiting for cabinet work. Odd sizing of tables. 33 x 33 for under $3k is attractive, but it's that extra couple inches for cabinet work I'd miss. 25-26 x 36-42" would give the cnc more ability to produce case work. Modern design, most upper cabinets are 36" height or more. Again, maybe, looking at point to point, cnc, panel cutter all in one just isn't , wait for it, on the table.
