Reformation doesn’t occur without biblical preaching. Yet developments in technology, a decline in literacy, and the rise of secularization have led some to question the viability of preaching in the modern world. This session considers the rediscovery of preaching in the ministry of the Reformers, explains why preaching is central to Christianity, and considers why expository preaching is essential for the future.

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Get the altars out of the churches. Altar implies sacrifice and that's been taken care of once for all. The pulpit must be central. Dear God, raise up preachers with backbone who will preach the Word and make Christian's examine themselves to ensure that they are truly in the faith. The great commission is ours, teach us, Lord, through preachers, how to spread it. God, raise up more great preachers.

I agree with Dr Lawson in lamenting the dropping of the Sunday Night services in churches. Common here in Australia. Those churches have thus reduced their output from 104 sermons per year to 52, while the saints stay home & watch television.

Not entirely the preacher's fault for every believer has a personal role and responsibility to pursue God with all the means of grace at their disposal and to do so wholeheartedly and faithfully...even when there is not a Sunday sermon. We are now privileged to live in an electronic age and have SO much excellent material to learn from and be edified, instructed and built up in the knowledge and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I did my doctoral project on this very issue and doubled down to re-emphasize our Wednesday night time for preaching. God grew it immediately and our church is already seeing the benefits from it. Thankful for Dr. Lawson's appeal!

5:00 - Can't clap for that. It's not there as they claim. So many good preachers who just leap off the end of the pier when it comes to Calvinism...

He says preaching was central to the Church yet cannot name an example until the 1500s. Of course there were example of great preachers before then, including Chrysostom. However, there is ample evidence of the Eucharist being central to Christian worship throughout all of the Christian age. This practise was marginalised during and subsequent to the Reformation.

His talk was about the Reformation, so it's not surprising that he doesn't cover AD 100 - 1500, as that wasn't the topic at hand.

Point taken, but he did mention that preaching was central in every epoch, century etc of the Christian age. I think he'll struggle to find anything like Reformation preaching before the 16th century

When he said every other verse in acts is a sermon. And acts I believe is the start of the church. And growing of the church. So that might make the first reference of perching from church one.

Did not the Vatican control everything until that point?

No doubt preaching was a part of the early church, but so was the eucharist, baptism and so on. I think the Acts of the Apostles clearly shows these aspects of Christian worship as well.

"Tripping over their spines, would have been preferable to their 'skirts' " I don't find moral courage a predominantly male trait. Either way your metaphor fails, because most women don't wear their skirts long enough to trip over these days anyway. 😏

2023 I took issue with this as well. But I do wonder if he was speaking of the papacy. I like him so much, so this was disappointing.
