This has inspired me to try and do a rig walk around of my 95 4runner. It is a never ending project. I feel the second generations just don’t get the love they deserve.

I see you’re a new KZfaqr, and I’m kind of new to the 4Runner community. I’m buying my dads 1990 4Runner off of him as a daily and I wanna start doing a little bit with the truck! It has about 150k original miles and manual transmission. Hope to see more vids from you so I can learn!

Jared L they’re great trucks! Very capable. Thanks for watching. We never stop watching other vids or going out and experiencing and learning new things. Always go with a buddy and have recovery gear with you in case you get stuff. $200 can go a long way in a recovery gear kit. Welcome to the community! It’s a great one

I have a question if anyone wants to respond: Been working on a 95 runner(Auto A340H 3.0, 4WD) for a few months now(no previous auto work experience)...swapped transmission but I think the ebay one I got is also toast(currently waiting to hear back from ebay seller). Did new passenger cylinder head and all new gaskets and valves. Compression is 170-171 on all cylinders except two... 179 on one and 152 on another. New plugs and wires, tires, coil springs, TPS, and transmission solenoids. And new high performance radiator. My question is whether I should put more time and money into it because I keep hearing people say the motor is super weak and the transmission as well. I got the runner to hit up the slopes as well as drive back and forth a couple hours for surfing...but it sounds like this thing will only crawl up the pass at 55 or less...? Hoping to do a 3.4 swap eventually but I need to know if this thing is only good for crawling and if I should just sell it. I only like the look of 2nd gen 4runners and don't need a speed machine...but I do like to zip through traffic past "texters" in a hurry.
@TrailBendersOverland
@TrailBendersOverland 5 жыл бұрын
The Weird Side unfortunelty this was the exact reason I got rid of my 95 t4r I absolutely love the body of this particular year but unfortunately the 3.0 is a disaster build in my opinion. On robin I blew two motors and put money towards the 3.4 swap with already the motor ect.. however the time and money spent I could have bought a 2008 T4R ready to go. I hope this answers your question. If you decide to push forward with this I’d love to keep tabs on it and follow the before and after. Also if you need any help don’t hesitate to ask. Cheers

@@TrailBendersOverland Appreciate the response. Did you end up getting a later generation then?(something with a warranty!) I just heard back from the ebay seller finally about the transmission he sold me. After a heated back and forth, he agreed to send me another transmission(a good one) and doesn't even want me to send back the old one. So if it works and the truck runs soon, I'll only be about 2k into it. 600 for the truck(with the toast tranny), 400 for cylinder head, 450 for towing, and 400-500 in solenoids, coils..other. The tires were about 850 but I'm not counting them. If I part out the old transmissions and get cylinder core rebate, then I'm looking at a total of 1500 maybe for a 95 with 178k miles. ..could be worse. My dream would be to continue customizing every inch of it including a 3.4 swap and and paint and interior...ending up with something worth 20k. Of course it'll cost me 30k to get there:) ... hear you can put a 2JZ Supra motor in 4runner! Bu t the wheels will fall off if not careful! (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d5pgY5qTsarXeWQ.html)

yeah, the 3VZ and A340 are known for being weak, but if you are not looking for a speed machine, then it should work just fine for hitting the slopes and surf. i use mine for camping, towing motorcycles, mountain biking and kayaking. it's not my daily driver, though. be prepared to maintain the tranny, though.

@@TheWeirdSide1 I dunno man. These things are slow up mountain passes, but other than that, really fine. I get 22 mpg on the highway with my 92. I have 309,000 miles on mine and no issues. You just have to do maintenance regularly, keep it cool with a well maintained cooling system and not beat on it. I think the guys that have problems with this motor run oversize tires, floor it everywhere, and don't really maintain it properly. I still drive mine all over the west coast without trouble. I did 9 states last summer, on and off road. These motors will go a long long time if you take care of it. I think the reported problems are overhyped.

Question for the 4Runner guys, should I buy a 2nd gen (1997) with 300 000 miles highway driven, pricey for the miles but very very clean
@TrailBendersOverland
@TrailBendersOverland 4 жыл бұрын
Kelton Derkach If it’s clean and starts/runs smooth then I wouldn’t hesitate. Make sure the HG is good and give a good look over. The motors runs forever if maintained well. That said, Steven had 2 2ng gems motors fail. They were in unknown condition though and the trucks were having issues from the start. Find a clean one and you should be good.

Im sorry for the late response I must have missed this comment. Honestly learn from my mistakes, as much as I loved the 2nd Gen and still miss it I went through 2 motors and continued running into issues with vacuum leaks. I would recommend getting a 3rd gen for the sole fact that the 3.4L 5VZ-FE motor was almost bullet proof VRS the 3.0 L which had huge head gasket problems! These are just my opinions. If you still want to go with the second gen make sure you test compression in the cylinders as they should all be around 170-180psi with no more than 10% difference between the cylinders. the 4th and 6th cylinders are notorious for low compressions due to valve issues. good luck hopefully I answered your question. would love to hear an update as to which 4runner you go with. Cheers
