Steven Spielberg’s my second favorite director; Ishiro Honda’s my first. Ishiro Honda & Akira Ifukube were the Steven Spielberg & John Williams of Japan from 1954-1975. Fun fact: Steven Spielberg cited Ishiro Honda’s original Godzilla film as the main inspiration for the dinosaurs in the original Jurassic Park film. And from 1965-1995, Akira Ifukube and John Williams battled each other (with Williams earning his five Oscar wins and several other nominations in that timespan [see below for list of films]). Another fun fact: John Williams cited Akira Ifukube (amongst others) as inspirations for becoming a composer. And another fun fact: Akira Ifukube died on February 8th 2006 at age 91 (which was on John Williams’ then-74th birthday) 1965 (THE START!): Ifukube scored Frankenstein Conquers the World & Invasion of the Astro-Monster and Williams scored Frank Sinatra’s None But The Brave 1966: Ifukube scored War of the Gargantuas and Williams scored The Rare Breed 1967: Ifukube scored King Kong Escapes and Williams scored Valley of the Dolls (Williams’ first ever Oscar nomination) 1968: Ifukube scored The Snow Woman & Destroy All Monsters and Williams scored Heidi (Williams won his first Emmy) 1969: Ifukube scored Latitude Zero and Williams scored Goodbye Mr. Chips & The Reivers (Williams was Oscar-nominated for both films) 1970: Ifukube scored Space Amoeba and Williams scored Jane Eyre (Williams won his second Emmy) 1972: Ifukube scored Godzilla vs. Gigan and Williams scored The Cowboys & The Poseidon Adventure (Williams was Oscar-nominated for the latter) 1975 (THE BIG YEAR!): Ifukube scored Honda’s Terror of MechaGodzilla [Honda’s final film before retirement, as well as Ifukube’s final film score until 1991] and Williams scored Spielberg’s Jaws (Williams’ second Oscar win [as well as a Golden Globe and a Grammy]) 1991: Ifukube scored Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (his first film score since Terror of MechaGodzilla) and Williams scored Hook & JFK (Williams was Oscar-nominated for both films) 1992: Ifukube scored Godzilla vs. Mothra (Honda visited the set shortly before his 1993 death) and Williams scored Far And Away & Home Alone 2: Lost in New York 1993: Ifukube scored Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II (he and Toho Studios dedicated the film to Honda’s memory) and Williams scored Jurassic Park & Schindler’s List (the latter is Williams’ fifth and [so far] final Oscar win [along with both another Golden Globe and Grammy], and Spielberg cited Honda’s original Godzilla film as inspiration for the dinosaurs in the former) 1995 (THE FINALE!): Ifukube scored Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (his final film score before his 2006 death [though Ifukube’s various kaiju themes still continue to be reused by Toho Studios in various Godzilla films]) and Williams scored Sabrina & Nixon (Williams was Oscar-nominated for both films)

I love to see two of the greatest directors ever, Steven Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson working hard to keep cinematic history preserved. And I really appreciate that Warner-Discovery CEO David Zaslav is as enthusiastic about the Rescue Operation of Films and specifically all the wonderful films of the Warner Bros library. I really appreciate that this collective party has restored Rio Bravo and East Of Eden, two of my all-time favorite movies. I also appreciate that David Zaslav gave a shout out to some of Warner Bros most courageous films, Black Legion (1937), which starred Humphrey Bogart in a powerful performance, Confessions Of A Nazi Spy (1939), with Edward G. Robinson in a powerful performance, and Gentleman's Agreement, which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1948 and starred Gregory Peck in a powerful performance. All of these were groundbreaking, socially conscious films and we all appreciate Warner Bros for having the courage to make them. Thanks for the interview, TCM and Ben Mankiewicz.

Spielberg and Lucas have $1billion between them. They could have -- long ago -- singlehandedly restored every single film in film history. Why haven't they? They give a pittance of their net worth to film preservation. They should stop talking and spend their money on it.

@@TheTerryE A LOT more than that. Spielberg's net worth, alone is $4 BILLION. Lucas's is over $5 BILLION. So between them, they're worth almost $10 BILLION. And yes, I agree, considering what they have at their disposal, there's quite a lot more they could be doing on the issue. That said, they *have* done quite a lot (as has Scorsese, before them) and the message about it is almost as important, as it gets others involved in doing it, especially the current generations. But I agree with you for the most part.

Great but no one mentioned why films should be preserved beyond the obvious reasons that they are historically old and had great stories to show and tell. No one mentioned the equally if not more important reason for film preservation which is that it is DIFFERENT from digital movies. Film has its own character and its own great and unique vibrant beauty on the big screen. A unique canvas for visual artistry. No matter how hard digital technology tries to clone the actual film look using pixels…digital will never be an authentic piece of film. I would be very happy and grateful if these giants of the Hollywood industry start promoting and working on bringing back the business and the practice of traditional movie watching. Which is watching movies shot on film on the big screen using actual film projectors. It was Hollywood who killed this practice and replaced it with digital technology. More than just preserving their film rolls, this great tradition of viewing these films should be revived for modern day audiences.

I hate Mankiewicz … I got rid of my cable tv because of his destruction of TCM. Every night I gotta watch these leftist professors explain race and gender discrimination of every old movie. Mankiewicz acts like it was the American people that didn’t hire real Indians in leading roles of Western films, or the American people were to blame for the portrayal of black people in films. Maybe it’s time he shifts the blame on his grandfather and the rest of Hollywood elites that made the films. They’re the ones that did it, it wasn’t the Audience. I don’t think an American audience would walk out of theatre in 1956 if Scar was portrayed be a real Indian in The Searchers. It was Hollywood executives that rather pay a white actor before giving the role to a minority. Then there’s Gone with the Wind, I’m tired of hearing them whine about the portrayal of black slaves in a movie that takes place during slavery. Btw, they constantly leave out the fact that the two most positive moral characters in the story were Melanie and Mamie, who happens to be black. As a matter of fact, Rhett butler wanted her respect more than any white character. Mankiewicz is a leftist that constantly pushes his woke agenda on TCM. I don’t know who he thinks his audience is…I don’t think it’s a bunch of woke college kids. I miss the days of Robert Osborn, he strictly talked about the movies, he never pushed an agenda
