Started my primary training a few months ago after years of enjoying this channel. 12 hours in and your videos have taken on a totally new light as far as finally understanding the sequence of tasks and radio calls from start to finish. You have been a huge inspiration in my journey Steve-O! Safe travels.

Funny! I’m a North Up map reader. I remember distinctly. In third grade, Rochester MN school no less, the teacher said “Always look at your map north up. Don’t flip your map all around like that.” Cheers!

As a missionary pilot here in the Philippines, I am a North up guy. Maybe it's because I don't have weather radar on-board. I always enjoy watching your videos because I get to learn so much. God.bless Stevo

I'm a North-up person. As an underway OOD on 2 Coast Guard cutters, that's the way the charts were laid out and how I'm used to navigating. Plus north-up makes it easier to visualize where the weather systems are going.

Beautiful day for it, great flight great video I'm sure it always takes a long time to edit thx for the hard work. As always safe travels and may you continue to have the time of your life doing what you love to do. Oddly enough I live in the California San Francisco bay area also a Greenbay Fan. Beautiful green hills near the airport during landing.

Same, I’m a Nav and doing radar fixes was always easier north up. I can do the orientation in my head but to know where you are in respect to a specific point...N up is way easier.
@JWH-01
@JWH-01 4 жыл бұрын
I'm the same way. I learned to fly with paper charts on a kneeboard. I had them stacked in order of the trip. All of them were positioned "north up". As I flew off of one, I would remove the top one and keep flying on the next. I used to lay them out on the floor or a big table to draw course lines.
@seaprobecaptain
@seaprobecaptain 4 жыл бұрын
Nope, always track up for me. With paper charts, I used to rotate them on my lap (before I even knew it was called track-up) to point in the direction of flight. For VFR, that made it much easier to spot landmarks for pilotage. My first instrument instructor insisted that ALL IFR pilots use north-up. I tried, but just never felt comfortable. So it is now track-up all the time. Oh, and I completed my rating with a different instructor ;-)

Track up for me. This makes it way easier to maintain spatial awareness as far as I'm concerned. When I need the relative location to a fix, I mentally superimpose the waypoint on the HI based on what I see outside or on the map and just read my location relative to the fix off of the HI. Nothing to figure out/calculate in my head. Not sure if I could even manage it N-up. Something to try next time I'm up
@ewrcap
@ewrcap 4 жыл бұрын
Most Airlines are track up. There is less interpretation involved, for instance if your traffic, fix etc are at 3 o’clock, they are the same on the map. The most relative direction is forward of the aircraft (airplanes rarely back into mtns). Also, your other instruments such as heading indicator, OBS, HSI are oriented to track up and can’t be changed.

Always relaxing riding along. I learned to fly back in 1974 while in the Air Force at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro , NC. I could rent a Cessna 150 for $10 an hour wet. Our flight instructors were F4E fighter pilots and required an additional 5 bucks an hour for instruction. Those were some great times!

When you decrease the RPM's to reduce cabin noise level, just how much noise is in the cabin? Do the cabin passengers need headphones or is it manageable without ear protection? Thanks S1K
@rodriguebrousse2751

Around 76.5 in the cabin and 91.6 in the cockpit (according to newavex), which is a bit uncomfortable without a headset.

@@rodriguebrousse2751 Thank you
@danio1021
@danio1021 4 жыл бұрын
@@larrymayberry2312 you can compare 76.5 to a vacuum cleaner so it would be just about you will be able to hold a conversation. 91 is over level at which sustained exposure may result in hearing loss. So basiaclly as a pax you would need earphones for comfort, but as a pilot you need them for hearing safety.
@ewrcap
@ewrcap 4 жыл бұрын
@@rodriguebrousse2751 The AVEX numbers are wildly optimistic for the 700 or 850 cabin. At 2000 rpm, my iPhone decibel app reads 88 in the pax cabin. Reducing the rpm to 1850 gives a 2-3db decrease which is quite noticeable. Keep in mind the dB scale is logarithmic. The AVEX numbers COULD be for the 900 series which has significantly enhanced noise insulation. A large part of the noise profile is wind noise which is reduced greatly at the high altitudes. Another benefit of using the lower rpm is decreased fuel flow and lower engine temps (ITT). There is a slight decrease in True airspeed but worth it IMO.

Great video. Great flight. That is one fine plane. I used to fly out of the Twin Cities and got to Rochester, MN a few times. More often than not there would be a Northwest/Delta commercial jet in a right hand pattern doing touch and go's. The trick was to fly to the VOR, a bit west of Rochester, turn left and line right up for a left hand approach. Tower would caution me about wake turbulence. Oh, yes. I'm grounded now - medical. When I fly commercial I'm always playing passive pilot. Seems like I get it right every time - especially the landings.
