I was in a kayak once and was fishing a large pocket in some pads, probably a good 30-40ft wide pocket. Wind had gently pushed me against the right side of it while I was fishing the left. During one of my casts I startled a large fish right next to me, it was sitting inside of a 2ft hole in those pads on my right, only 3 feet away from my kayak. It kicked up water and scared the crap out of me and all, fully spooked and fleeing. I had stayed there for another 15-20min continuing to fish that left side of the pocket, but before leaving I had to try it. I grapped my junky spinning dock rod with a weightless senko on it and just dropped it 6 inches below the water, bail closed and all - just lowered it and lifted back up - fat midwest 4-5lb'er was on there. I was pretty amazed that it went right back to that spot so quickly even though I was still there.

Crazy pressure here, so that deeper first is great advice!!! Fact is I have always thought hat just fishing a spot well WAS disturbing it given how often the visual cover get hit hard and often. It's like the areas with few shore fishing spots. I call em death zones. Any fish that feed there and are unwary are toast. ...Gotta start going deep on the weekends here and try to find the routes of those circles around the death zones

Also I just want to say, that if we talk about the importance of low power transducer pings in hardwater seasons.... then boats with 2-3 transducers going, trolling motor going, livewells pumping and a guy moving around on the deck - yeah the bass know we are there it's just a matter of immediate danger versus cautious behavior. This is probably why we've noticed that it's better to set trolling motor to a low continuous setting is better than being on the pedal. They always know we are going by, but the starting and stopping triggers an immediate risk response rather than and gentle glide back towards deeper water or them just pausing on structure as we go by.

I've read that the best way to estimate depth is to drop a lure until you can't see it, then DOUBLE that depth. That's because if we can see our lure, the light is going down, bouncing off the lure and coming back to us. The "dark" zone is twice that depth.
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors Жыл бұрын
I love that verbiage "dark zone." Thank you for adding that for everyone. I will have to remember that.

I would like to add when you pull up to fish let your trolling motor down easy no graphs on and just give it about 3 or more minutes and the start fishing don't just start casting because they circle back and no lures were thrown and that is a complete different approach
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors Жыл бұрын
It is! I know I slam that trolling motor down and get started way too quickly. Great addition to this. Thank you!

@Steve Rogers Outdoors this is as you stated in a pressure fished water, I turn the graphs on later once things settle in after about 3 to 5 minutes. Seems like a waste of tournament time but I'm actually maximizing my production of proper fishing techniques, which should translate into more bites. You run a great straight to the point fishing channel less bs talk and more productive teaching.
