I saw Stevie Ray Vaughan play at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin the night before he died in a helicopter crash (1990). He was touring with Eric Clapton, and it was one of the best experiences ever! Stevie Ray thrilled the crowd to no end. When Clapton took the stage afterwards, it was just a bonus! It still hurts to think of that horrible, very preventable tragedy.

“I love the bassist. He’s just looking.” Well, actually, he’s watching for a cue from Stevie letting him know it is time to continue to the next section of the song. Stevie would improvise a lot when he was playing. Sometimes a quick solo section would go for eight bars, and other times he would continue for 16 or 24 bars. It depended how he felt in the moment and how he liked what he had currently come up with. A lot of the time solos are kind of mapped out and he would play something similar every time they played a song or section of a song, and other times he would improvise more and change a lot of what he played. The band members developed some nonverbal communication skills to let the rest of the band know when they were going to complete their solo section and move on to the next section, or pass the solo over to the other guy. After Reese joined the band on keyboards and piano you will see his cues are very, very obvious. He, too, would take silos of varying lengths depending on his mood and feel, etc,, and when he was ready to pass it back to Stevie you will see him raise his arm for the last bar or two in order to indicate he’s about to finish up and give it back to Stevie. Lots of bands that do stuff like that will have their own shorthand methods of letting each other know when it is time to progress. So in this case, Tommy is aware of how long the section might be, and also how long to extend it for if it goes past that, and thus when to start watching for a cue. They won’t come randomly. They all know that it’ll be multiples of the same number of bars in order to make things sound “proper.” The second time they did the TV show Austin City Limits is with Reese, and you can see them giving each other cues many times throughout the show.

Stevie's version of Tin Pan Alley is so good that I am sure the creator was one of the first to greet Stevie in heaven and congratulate him on improving it from its original. The best version of this is the live rendition featuring another Texas Blues guitarist as it showcases Stevie's vocals a bit more. His Lenny song is another amazing track as it is undeniable how much passion and love he put into not just writing that song but performing it as well. Everything about a man who has traveled the wrong path... was able to correct himself to live a better life and be rewarded by sharing his good fortune with the love of his life is wrapped up in that one track.

Your observations Bisscute about Stevie pouring his soul into his playing were dead on. There's a song that he did with his brother Jimmy called Hard to Be and in the very beginning you hear Stevie saying, "Roll (the tape) and I'll just FEEL something" which is exactly why you noticed the bassist Tommy Shannon always looking at him because Stevie was always playing whatever he felt for another who-knows-how-many bars so Tommy would looking to Stevie for his queue to move on to the next stage of the song. To me, that last part of the feedback when he's bending the strings was like he was making love to it, like, I've got you baby, feel me!

I feel bad for saying this, but my all time favorite SRV song is another Hendrix song he covered called Little Wing. It's not to say his original songs are bad, but he took an already beautiful song, rewrote it as an instrumental, and made it one of the best instrumentals I have ever heard. Another great blues guitarist to check out is Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Had a big hit with Blue on Black (you can really hear a lot of SRV influence), and most people would suggest it. I would say Aberdeen or Was by him are also awesome.
