Thanks for the ranking Glen. I don't know much about Stevie beyond the radio hits but I'm ready to be enlightened. One interesting piece of trivia is that, at only 13 years old, he appeared in the 1964 surf comedy Muscle Beach Party. He was introduced as Little Stevie Wonder and played a song in the surf club house. That movie also has the great Dick Dale and comedy legends Don Rickles and Buddy Hackett.

Hi Glen!!! I'm just a casual Stevie wonder fan, just know the big classics and the songs he released in the 80's that gave him a kind of revival and brought him back to the younger generations and later with a cool cover the Red Chili Peppers did of "Higher Ground", it's a really good one. cheers and be well

First half of the 70s was really a great run for Stevie, so many fantastic albums in just half a decade. I'd go for Music of my Mind as my favorite.

I got to see Stevie Wonder live, for free, in 2009 up in Montreal for International Jazz Festival. It was really great! I should start with a greatest hits or something. I need some Stevie in my collection.

Thank you Glen! I’ve always felt that Stevie has been generally overlooked in the VC, and also when he is discussed that people mainly only talk about “Songs In The Key Of Life”, which, in my opinion is a fine album, but easily my least favorite of his peak 4 album 72-76 period. To me, it would be like having all of the focus being on The Stones “Exile In Main Street”, and ignoring “Sticky Fingers”, “Let It Bleed”, “Beggars Banquet” and most of their other work - at least, that’s the way I’ve been seeing it. Also, Stevie’s albums “Hotter Than July”, “In Square Circle”, and (parts of) “Secret Life Of Plants”, are all very worthwhile. Nice video.

The story of Motown as I was told it just cracks me up. Berry Gordy had a hardware store or something, and everybody who walked into the store became a Motown star, including Stevie Wonder. It's like you have an old fashioned grocery store, and in walk The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Genesis ... on and on. And you sign them all up. I don't know if the story is true or not, but it's a hilarious idea. I suppose it became 'The Rocky Horror Show.' In the '70s, Stevie Wonder was everywhere, especially at parties. Being Motown, it wasn't quite my thing but it was incredible music that was played either side of 'Oops Upside Your Head' as everyone rowed on the floor. Great songs, catchy, cool and ideal for parties, although I never listened to him at home clutching his album covers. And then absolute silence, probably after the hideous 'Ebony and Ivory.' It was like everybody had gorged themselves on too much cake and became allergic to him. And apparently still so. If anyone is due a comeback, it must be him, though. Put up against rap, I guess he is not considered an authentic voice, more like 'Shaft' spread over several hit albums, but his stuff is really good. It's just that I don't go to those kinds of parties anymore, the ones where a guy is found fast asleep, mouth open, lying under a beer keg, still dripping. They were great parties at the time but I just can't imagine them now. I hope they are still going on and will turn back to Stevie Wonder, and maybe 'Oops Upside Your Head' too. Ah, nostalgia!

The 2 CD edition of "The Definitive Collection" is the way to go. The US and UK editions differ slightly. I'd also put his 1980 album "Hotter Than July" in that run of great albums. There's a few just okay songs, but three-quarters of that album easily measures up to his 1972 - 1976 run. And, there's the four new tracks on his 1982 "Original Musiquarium" comp. After that, he just had a few good singles here and there. But, he was never at that level again.

@@GlenKellawayfromthebasement It's a 2 CD/ 2 LP compilation from his 1972 - 1980 years. It was worth it back in the day for the four new songs, plus his hit "Send One Your Love" from his odd 1979 soundtrack album. It's been superseded by "The Definitive Collection" 2 CD comp, as that has most of the new songs from that older compilation, plus songs from before and after his 1972 - 1980 era.
