Stevie was actually a pioneer in using electronic instruments in popular music. He started using synths on his albums as early as 1972.

yesss, exactly. he was wayyyy ahead of his time, it's actually insane. music of my mind, songs in the key of life, hotter than july, journey through the secret life of plants, and in square circle are perfect examples of his electronic use in music during the 70s-80s

Knocks Me Off My Feet is such a beautifully written song and I personally don't understand how it could be considered predictable, but to each their own!

It is a beautiful song. The level of musicianship is pure genius. Play knocks Me Off My Feet listen the way he plays the cymbals. It’s utterly Magic and a true gift he was born with. Masterpiece

Agreed. I feel like some of her least favorite tracks are my most favorite tracks on the album. That said, Knocks didn't really excite me that much on the first listen either. It took many listens to see all the subtleties that make it genius (like the polyrhythms going on in the verse).

Stevie Wonder is a legit musical genius and was doing things that no one was doing and was years ahead of the times. He has a stretch of 3-4 albums that are just untouchable.

To reach such a level of maturity, creativity and production at just 26 years old is nothing short of miraculous. Stevie has been taken over by so many artists and in particular American rappers in the 90s and 2000s that many don't even know that he is the basic reference. A genius and a living legend.

I remember the first time listening to this album... I found it too slow, and a number of tracks didn't connect. About 15 years later, I appreciate the whole album and the journey it takes me on.

Great to see your reaction, my musical taste varies a lot, back in the vinyl days I liked to play albums all the way through rather than the short attention span CD experience of jumping from track to track. I found that the tracks I did not initially like grew on me. Probably in my top 10 albums of all time, very slick production. Hope your house move is not too stressful, mine are never fun, but once you have done it things are better!

"Sir Duke" is a tribute to jazz musicians of the past. For there's Basie, Miller, Satchmo And the king of all, Sir Duke And with a voice like Ella's ringing out There's no way the band could lose That's Count Basie, Satchmo is Louis Armstrong, Sir Duke is Duke Ellington, Ella is Ella Fitzgerald. Hi Kira, I'm pretty sure "I Wish" reminded you of Will Smith's "Wild Wild West", because it heavily borrowed from Stevie's song (he had a cameo in the music video as well). Really liked your reaction, I just listened to this album a few days ago. If you enjoy Stevie Wonder, he has some more classic albums under his belt.:) "Talking Book", "Innervisions", "Fulfillingness First Finale" ...

You'll find out that many rappers used Stevie's music for their own songs. I'm convinced that's why rap in the 90's got so huge. Every song sampled a song that people universally loved. It's hard to hate a rap song built on some of the greatest songs ever made.

When you're older, you will appreciate this much more. When I was your age it was all metal and gangsta rap. But as I got older, what I thought of as old people music, Springsteen, Stevie, Steely Dan, is what I now prefer. Maybe because I'm an old people now.

I prefer his album innervisions over songs in the key of life. If you are keeping with the R&B, Soul, and Funk genres. You should listen to Curtis Mayfield as well(RIP)

This is one of the greatest albums ever written, composed and recorded in history by a musical genius, the younger generation has no clue what you are listening to. The songs are phenomenal and sung by probably the greatest male vocalist that ever lived.

I prefer "Innervisions" and "Fullingness First Finale" from Stevie, which are from 3-4 years earlier than this -- think you might prefer those, though this does have outstanding songs on it as well.

This album and 'Inner Visions' are the essential Stevie Wonder albums [each for distinct reasons], along with the hit singles-related early LPs - but these albums were inestimably huge to the sound of classic, mid-70s soul and capital 'F' Funk [and by extension 80s hip-hop].

I was listening to Stevie when he was the "12 year old genius" with "Fingertips Part 2" when I was about 8. Outside of greatest hits collections and 45s I've never had anything else by him. Parts of "Sir Duke" I recognize but not much else. React to "Absolutely Free" by The Mothers Of Invention. That would be entertaining!

Maybe I had been indoctrinated as a child, but I was blown away by this album from the very first time I heard it! Then again, maybe it's because I grew up as a kid in the 70s.

You analysis is so good, especially from a person who is not into Stevie’s music. I loved your reaction when Pastime Paradise came in. Ironically, one of the best tracks in the history of popular music was not popular until Coolio remade it.

The thing about this record is that it showcases so many elements better than anything which had gone before. Stevie Wonder was the recent recipient of the biggest record deal in history. He was approaching (many say) his creative peak. The production staff amd session musicians contracted by Tamla Motown were right up there with the very best in the business. Stevie Wonder himself drove everyone crazy with his perfectionism and worked himself and everyone involved literally into the ground in the making of this album. Long sessions, long hours and days in the studio etc. As well as all that, the guest artists on this album reads like a who's who of all time greats... Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Deneice Williams, Minnie Ripperton, Mike Dembello, the list goes on. Add in Stevie Wonder's 100% legit musical chops and unparalleled ability to compose both original complex musical works of art, as well as catchy 3 minute pop songs that appeal to everyone. Put all of those things together, and you create the perfect storm which resulted in one of (if not the) greatest albums of all time.

You should listen to Innervisions and Hotter Than July. Those are my two favorite Stevie albums. Lot of weird songs on there, but I dig a little weirdness.

I Wish is a killer track. And Gangster's Paradise by Coolio is inspired. He made it his own which is very difficult to outdo SW. Ordinary Pain is a masterpiece - his and hers breakup POV

One thing you've got to remember with Stevie is that he was sucessful young, so he got bored easily and found collaboirators to do edgier stuff.

And this is how we bought Albums in the 70's, go to the record shop and listen to an album, skip what songs you didn't like and if there were enough songs you liked you would buy it and play it over and over until your next purchase.

I guess You need more musical maturity to understand this music. I begin getting interested in music through metal when I was 10 (now I'm 24) but then I search different types of music such as prog rock - more extreme type of metal - classic rock - pop - punk - barroque/classical/romantic music era and then jazz (bebop, cool jazz, fusion, etc). If you are really into what music is all about, you would choose your path and then you will realize that the music you thought you don't like, it's actually really good and complex. Trust me, it would grow on you. Stevie is a genius of music and the music he created is really emotionally powerful. The first song "Love is in need of love today" is really profund when you get it.

The part of "I wish" you recognized was because it was sampled by Will Smith's "Wild Wild West". Stevie Wonder inspired a lot of hip hop artists.

I always gravitated towards Marvin Gayes music more. I completely respect Stevie is a musical genius and one of the all time great songwriters but a lot of his songs from this album leave me cold. Possibly down to the production.

@@shegwin not knocking the production or mixing at all. It’s obviously incredibly ahead of it’s time. I just prefer the more organic sounds of other soul albums to this one, which is quite heavily synthesised.

This is a great double album, it’s however nowhere near what one would call concise. I’d never recommend it as an entry point into Stevie’s music it’s too all encompassing and much, just a lot. Talking Book and Innervisions are probably better complete bodies of work
