This is another Austrian Polymer. It's similar to the Glock and even designed by the primary engineers who were Glock's former employees. Many people are ill or misinformed about this gun and speak poorly, yet they never owned or fired one. It has numerous design improvements over the Glock firearms of that era. Lower barrel bore axis, better handle grip angle, big trapezoid sights, sig/beretta teardown, and more safety. The gun was built from the ground up as a 40sw so it also has better chamber support in that cartridge caliber.
For holsters, you have many choices and for 3-dot or night sites you will need to research but a few have deployed 1911 sites by making slight modifications on the side post dovetail. You need to measure your sights groove and|or have a gunsmith advise you on what is available. I have a set of Trijicon for this gun somewhere but never installed them. The big triangle front sight is all that I have been using and I do a lot of point shooting up to 12 yards on FBI Q-targets and you can easily hit COM.
I have owned this weapon for over 20 years. It's reliable and can feed almost any ammo other than Fiocchi TC, which seems problematic. It was the primary everyday carry for like 10 years. IIRC I paid 324usd new when it 1st landed at American Indoor Range Pembroke Park, FLA. That was a gun and w/2 12rd magazines. I bought more mags during the assault weapon ban thing and a few LEO-restricted magazines. They have held up, with just a spot or two rust pits. I rarely ever cleaned or oiled this weapon down.
The Steyr M-40 is comparable in size and weight to a Glock model 23, and the sub-compact S40 would be comparable to a Glock model 27. There's also an M9/S9 model and a M357 model. IIRC I do not recall ever seeing an S357 as an orderable option. The M357 barrel will fit the M40 slide and feed reliability also with the appropriate magazines. The 40sw and 357sig feed reliably from the same magazine.
The Steyr company has been around since and before the start of WW1 and has created iconic weapons such as the ; AUG , Steyr-1912, and GB pistols.
If Steyr was smarter, they could have deployed this gun a lot earlier, and if they had won military and police contracts, they could have been a dominant handgun in the LEO/MIL communities.
