I had a FiveseveN years ago. We bought the SS197 ammo from FN and it penetrated both sides of a soft Kevlar vest. It was a small hollow point round but it went straight through the vest. They stopped making the SS197 round, I would imagine because it was penetrating like that while it was designed to be a "civilian" round rather than the 190 armor piercing. I was full time law enforcement and still couldn't get my hands on the armor piercing rounds. You had to buy them through a department at that time, you couldn't have a letterhead to bring to the gun shop. It was a great pistol, I carried it as a secondary on SWAT. Almost no recoil and it barked some flames. I think the ammo now is toned down.

also keep in mind : FNH/FN America's contract with most companies has resulted in a purposed reduction in velocity to reduce the performance of 5.7x28 ammunition (probably at the fbi's request). speer gold dot being one of the worst... aac's velocity seems to be one of the best. but the projectile performance isnt quite there yet. of course, if you get your hands on older ammunition or private loads, you will see how the 5.7x28 USE to perform...

Yep. 5.7mm Gold Dot produces some of the worst ballistics compared to most other 5.7mm brands. Guntreviews has a side by side of Gold Dot vs SS197 with the SS197 penetrating 2" further and producing a significantly larger wound channel despite costing roughly 1/3 that of Gold Dot.

I currently carry the 2020 Speer Gold Dot (after crimping them all). That round did perfectly in my gel test. It used to have cycling issues however, in the PS90 feeding system. ...but if I had to buy new factory ammo and they have their act straightened out I'd be using the Vanguard 36 gr GPM, and/or the R&R; either the 30 gr (Cutting Edge Raptor bullets) and/or the 37 gr X (Maker bullet). As someone who has been shot by both 9mm and 5.7 and lived I can attest to them both making for a shitty recovery time. I can't tell you too much about this first incident but I can tell you for whatever reason the 9mm was a numb airy feeling hit with like the kind of pain you get from a firecracker going off in your hand or a hard smack from someone (mixed with adrenaline)...until I got to ER then the pain was def showing itself (hit once in the upper quad on right leg). The time I was hit by a 5.7 in the shoulder I will never forget. I was schobberknock drunk walking home from the bars in downtown Indianapolis (Broadripple) at about 2:30am when I was hit by a 5.7 round smack in my right shoulder right through my leather jacket intended for someone else in a drive by as I was walking thru the worst shady alley I could have picked just to get back to my apartment faster. The pain I felt from that MF was searing hot and super intense. It felt like what I imagine having a red hot stick of rebar slammed into your shoulder. I remember initially grabbing at it fumbling to make the pain stop like when you do when you burn the hell out of yourself to no avail. I actually ran myself to the police station a few streets away to get help. The 5.7 wound bled out more as well idk why but unlike the 9mm it went all the way thru my muscle and shoulder bone and out the other side. What sucked more? That's hard to say but what hurt more was the 5.7 without a doubt.

New to these videos. I want to point out that just because a round stops in the gel and doesn't blow everything apart is exactly the point. You want the bullet to stop in the target, so you're less worried about what's behind the target. You don't want a home defense weapon whose bullets exit the burglar and then your whole house.

I mean it wasn’t really designed for a handgun in the first place. The p90 in full auto was a really controllable bullet hose that had a deep magazine. Dump 10-15 rounds that zip through someone in a quick burst and they’re not getting back up. They just happened to make a compatible handgun so that you could have ammo commonality between PDW and a handgun. Carry more of the same Ammo since it’s small and light.
@raifsevrence
@raifsevrence 5 ай бұрын
@@inferninx It's the story that everybody should know by now unless they're new to firearms in general. The P90, though awkward for many, would still be really easy to use for military personnel that qualify once with a service rifle and pretty much never use one again in their entire career. The sort of thing you can give to such people or have within easy access for such people who are in or near combat zones where the proverbial shit could potentially and unexpected hit the fan. With the common example being oh shit there's russians parachuting into this camp that is a hundred miles or more behind any front line combat zone. Not necessarily a bad concept, but realistically one that introduces a platform which has very little practical or effective value for combat personnel and one which introduces unnecessary logistical requirements. Pistols and pistol caliber platforms really don't make much sense in the grand scheme of things. Everybody would be better off if the various institutions adopted more rigorous training and skills maintenance regimes. Take all those people that are enlisted, but for all intents and purposes, non-combatants and make them attain and maintain real proficiency with the existing platforms.

I have only seen one comment about the atrocity committed by a P.O.S. at Ft. Hood on Nov. 20, 2009. I pray we have not forgotten those fallen and wounded. The weapon was the FN Five-Seven loaded with civilian FNH SS197SR 40 gr. V-MAX cartridge. Of the 13 killed, 6 were shot in the chest (with 4 likely as they were charging the shooter), 1 in abdomen, 1 to the head, and 1 with no description of wound. Of the 30 wounded, 5 were shot in the back (2 twice), 2 were shot in chest and back. All shots taken at self-defense distances. Essentially all shots to the chest (i.e., center mass/thoracic cavity) were fatal. I think that speaks very well of the round's capability and when you take into account the extremely low recoil and extra round capacity, it may be a better option than 9mm. The 5.7x28 doesn't make impressive entry and exit wounds, but the right round does significant internal damage. Out of the PS-90, that performance can extend to 150-200 yards.

@@tbjtbj4786 First, compare the two weapons: 1) "Older" .357 magnum revolver: I cannot find anything about which model, but let's assume 6-round cylinder, significant recoil, slow & frequent reload required. 2) FN Five-seven: Fed from 20-round magazine, very light, controllable recoil, fast follow-up shots, fast reload; according to gun store employees that assisted in the purchase it was chosen because it had one of the highest magazine capacities. Inside the building, 146 rounds were fired, 60% finding their target. Outside another 68 rounds fired with 40% hit ratio. 214 total rounds fired killing 13 (plus an unborn child) and wounding 32. No indications the .357 was fired. The P.O.S. was hit 5 times by 9mm and though paralyzed from neck down, survived. Here is a link to an excellent source on the incident, even keeping the source/website in perspective: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Fort_Hood_shooting Make you own determination and choices, but if there was a 5.7x28 small enough to carry concealed, I would be packing it. If it gets to where I will be continually wearing some big iron on my hip, it will be the S&W M&P 5.7: 22-round magazine, almost no recoil, and a round that (in my opinion) has more than proven itself.

Man your channel is great! I really like this comparison and the ballistic dummy. I agree with most of your point on 9mm and 5.7x28. They are both pistol rounds so both are a compromise from the get go. I only compare the 2 on their performance from a handgun because 5.56 SBR is a better option over a 5.7 or 9mm PCC. 5.7 will never do more damage than 9mm. 5.7 will always have a higher mag capacity, lower recoil, faster follow up shots, and better accuracy at further ranges. IMO it all comes down to the damage done and if 9mm does enough damage to justify using it even though 5.7 has the previously mentioned advantages. On the flip side for 5.7 to even be in the argument it has to do at least enough damage to be effective. I like the ammunition choices but there are many more 5.7 ammunition choices. Some that reach 2400 fps from a 5 inch barrel. Like elite ammunition’s 27 gr S4 using the same projectile as FN 198lf. Also elite ammunition also makes fragmenting and solid core penetrating rounds all loaded really hot. If a 5.7 handgun can deal even 2/3 the damage as a 9mm with any available load IMO with all the other added benefits it would take the cake. Right now I believe these loads can deal close to equal the damage as the best 9mm self defense loads. With the boom in 5.7 popularity I’d expect that within 10 years we get some 5.7 commercially available loads that match these specially loads. Then 5.7 will be considered better in a handgun for self defense

I own a Five seveN, actually the same exact model GT is using. I arrived at the conclusion based on my own testing years ago that 5.7, for civilians is really actually pretty pointless unless you got some SS190 penetrators laying around. You are better off going with 9mm to be honest and if you really want to pierce soft body armor theres better options for that. Like 7.62x25 tokarev. Theres a cool video of James Reeves seriously penetrating a level 3 plate with a Five seveN using SS190. That's plate is meant to stop 7.62x39 and it went through it. Pretty impressive, but since we cant get SS190... again it's pretty pointless for civilians I'm afraid.

As far as I know, the 5.7x28 round was in fact designed to defeat *old design* kevlar body armor that became standard issue to Russian infantry in 1989. Back then, the armor was *barely* enough to stop 9x19 and .45 ACP rounds. The US military primarily used MP5s chambered in 9x19mm for rear line and support troops. The main concern was that Russia could drop paratroopers behind NATO lines and the troops would be unable to stop them! Real scare there! Anyway, the 5.7 and P90 were designed as a PDW for rear line and support troops and could defeat old design kevlar armor used the the 1980s-1990s. Nowadays body armor has gotten much better and the 5.7x28 round is just obsolete.

depends on if your adrenaline is going. also In 1899, a group of Moro tribesmen in the Philippines took umbrage toward a United States occupation force in the southern islands, thereby initiating what became known as the Moro Rebellion. The Moros were fierce fighters, with a reputation of resistance toward any outside rule. Officers in the U.S. force were armed with Colt Model 1892 revolvers chambered in .38 Long Colt, a cartridge that originated the blackpowder era. The load at the time featured a 150-grain lead round-nose bullet launched at 750 f.p.s. using smokeless powder. Muzzle energy was 201 ft.-lbs., about the same energy as a .380 ACP with a 90-grain bullet. The Moros were reputed to tie themselves up with strips of vegetation from the jungles to prevent excessive bleeding and ingested locally made drugs to block the pain from wounds. Engagements involving the Colt double-action Model 1892 often resulted in the officer being killed or severely wounded by these motivated Moro juramentados. This prompted the War Department to launch the Thompson-LaGarde Tests of 1904. As expected, the rather grisly tests showed the .38 Long Colt significantly lacking in the power needed to stop a determined assailant.

On one hand you can buy 3A SBA for dirt cheap these days, some as low as $45/panel so SBA is far more common. On the other hands Mr. Guns N Gear tested that $45 armor panel and it stopped EVERY pistol and shotgun round sent at it including commercially available 5.7mm. It even “stopped” (technically) a .500S&W and .460 although it dragged the armor into the target. The 5.7 armor piercing isn’t really available to us, however the 5.7 has some other really nice attributes that have come up in Paul Harrel videos.

well, most test i have seen on youtube always counts on the plate catching the bullets, i dunno if most care for a real test of the rest of the protection. As i dunno if this would take out "real" plates. By real i mean not just scrap metal plates. lol

What myth. It was advertised and feared for being penetrative against soft armor, which most concealed armor are. That was back when it become popular, though. Concealed armor these days could get pretty hefty. Even hard level III would shit on it.

Video idea…the “one caliber” challenge. You each get a rifle and pistol that fires the same round, so like Micah with the 5.7, Mike with the 9mm, Charlie with 45ACP, whatever. Then you compete in both close and distance shots. Looking for 1 caliber that can do “it all”

I think you're really going to struggle to find (non esoteric) calibres that perform well in both roles. Anything that's good in a pistol really isn't going to get much better with a rifle or carbine aside from a slight bump in muzzle velocity and the controllability a rifle gives you. Or you could just go mental and get a BFR chambered in 45-70 if you no longer like your wrists.

Several IIIA armor choices will stop 5.7 but many will not. I think one of the important considerations is how much energy is left for terminal performance after it makes it through. The 5.7 is in my opinion a good one for this if you can only carry a pistol but for armor, a rifle is definitely better. They are just a little hard to tuck into your holster.

The beauty of the 5.7x28mm is that it combines the advantages of the .22lr with the advantages of the 9mm. It is soft shooting, light and pistols have a lot of capacity like in the case of the .22lr while at the same time it has reliability and terminal performance that compares favorably with the 9mm.

And the P90 was used on Stargate SG-1 where it was killing suped up alien warriors wearing armor. At least on BSG they weren't supposed to be actual FN 5.7s but apparently some people can't tell the difference.
@DarkDodger
@DarkDodger 5 ай бұрын
@@transtubular To be fair, in Stargate they used P90s on full auto to shred armored opponents, which is the exact purpose of the P90 and its 5.7 round. They're not designed to rival 9mm in stopping power vs unarmored opponents. The purpose is to give rifle-style armor penetration in a smaller-than-rifle package. Obviously stopping power is what had to be sacrificed to achieve this. That's why the P90 has a 50 round mag and an ungodly fire rate. You might shrug off the first five. Maybe even the first fifteen. Probably not gonna shrug off thirty. The human body isn't designed for that many extra holes.

If you're going as low as 28-grain, why not go to .17 HMR? Sure, it's only 20 grain, but it's way faster than a 5.7, like 2350fps. The 17-grain is even faster at 2650fps, and those things expand/explode on impact. Based rimfire 😗👌🏻
@GRAndreas7

@@mrkeogh Would you rather have a semi auto 5" pistol in .17 instead of 5.7? It is rimmed and less powerfull. It makes no sense for this role.
@ShastaBean
@ShastaBean 5 ай бұрын
@@mrkeogh The Speer Gold Dot is 40 gr, not 28. The 28 grain can be easily loaded to 2400 fps, which means your 20 grain @ 2350 is no comparison. (245 ft-lbs vs 358 ft-lbs). Just watched .17 thru chrono and it's (Norma ammo) 2700 fps from a rifle. That's 275 ft-lbs. That's less energy from a rifle, than a 5.7 x 28 using a pistol. Reasonable 5.7 loads should be 325 - 350 ft-lbs. So the same reason to not use .22 mag...because too weak and you said it yourself....rimfire.
