The ‪@steyr_arms‬ SSG 69 was an early trend-setting sniper rifle in many different ways. While not all design elements were copied for later rifles, it's wide use of polymers, short bolt throw design, detachable polymer magazines and adjustable length of pull are staple and expected features for most precision sniper rifles in 2023.
In many ways, the world had not paid attention to the fore-runner of sniper rifle technologies encapsulated in the SSG 69, but how would it perform on our course? We find out.

Hello everyone, I am an armorer in the Austrian Armed Forces. We still use the SSG69 in the same configuration today. The firing range is 400 meters for a head aim, 600 meters for a trunk aim and 800 meters for a whole body aim. (the latter being very "optimistic") The weapon seen in the video has been slightly modified as mentioned in the video. After so many years, the plastic of the gun stock has a tendency to break at the level of the magazine. Also, the gap between stock and barrel is too narrow. This means that when the sun heats the plastic of the stock on one side, it rests against the barrel and prevents the barrel from swinging freely

@@lucastonoli3256 Well, Austria was at times considered German, especially when “Germany” was made up of several independant German speaking states. Germanic refers to a people originating in Scandinavia spreading down into Europe. Much of eastern Germany was at this time inhabited by Slavs rather than Germanics. Sweden is more Germanic than Austria, which was the cradle of the Celts. It’s just that English is really bad at distinguishing between Deutsche and Germanen.

During the run, I was honestly thinking that the old glass was about all that was holding it back compared to modern precision rifles. Steyr might not be the biggest name in firearms, or find the most traction with military acceptance, but they're always thinking ahead, and it's neat to see how their ideas age. This one aged very well.

I have a SSG 69. I am NOT a long range shooter. Over the years, I have worked on many loads for this gun. It has been finicky on bullet weights. It has never liked the 168 gr Match King bullets. It likes heavier bullets. Some of the best groups I have seen is with 180 gr ammo.

Austrian here former sniper in training (no combat experience) my heart just jumped a little bit seeing this review 😍 that said that is already the updated version where they made small but significant changes: the scope on the original one was a Kahles ZF 69 6x42 with a T sight no ballistic reticle. The handle on the bolt had no knob it was practically just a flat piece of metal, we used to call it butter knife that's how easy it cuts your hand when trying to reload fast 🤭 there was only the 5 shot box magazine shown in the video, from the looks from it, it holds more rounds now because it sits flush with the trigger guard which wasn't the case on the original one it was flush with the frame and pretty annoying to get out because you had to squeeze two little levers together, and it still wouldn't release you'd have to pull it out 😆also there was no target stock just plain slippery polymer 😅but it was deadly accurate for a military duty sniper rifle set out to hit body targets up to 600 m with an 80 % first shot hit chance and exceeded that expectations easily. i am getting nerdy and nostalgic here 🙃 Very good picture where you can see some of the mentioned details: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steyr_SSG_69#/media/Datei:Steyr_SSG69.jpg

I had one like this in Rhodesia it had a set trigger and a Khales ZFM 6x42 ZFM, great gun, the scope reticule had a triangle, the width of each horizontal bar would tell you how to adjust your height, it was based on the assumption that a man shoulder to shoulder dimensions was 450mm or 18 inch. Best scope I ever had especially for shooting under pressure, for rapid acquisition of targets.

The SSG was an amazing rifle for me, except mine was paired up with a Leupold M3 10X Mil-Dot, and the longest successful engagement I made was 1,100 Yards (1,000 meters). To be honest, the small arms were (most of the time) the only things weere we got first rate "modern" quality items. (SSG69, AUG, Glock P80) Many other things were pretty dated in my time (99/00, ...we have conscription...). The body armour thing is something i would claim is mostly rooted in a "tradition" our armed forces experience at least since since the late 18th or early 19th century: being (sometimes criminally) underfinanced. (->i was still issued a steel helmet at the turn of the century while most of our army had changed to Kevlar) And the cardio thing i would claim is also partially due to a lack of funding. Hiking almost everywhere means no vehicle wear and no fuel used while improoving the soldiers health and stamina. (i started with 78kg of bodyweight at 187cm height, and after 4 months of basic training, infantery group leader and "emergency" platoon commander training, i was down to 70kg) And in the case Henry mentioned in the AUG video: If you are used to having to move everywhere by foot and then still have recources to "fight" left (at least trainingfights) and then, for an international exercise, you get the luxury to be moved by a motorized vehicle, you have all that stamina that is normally used up by "getting there" left...😎 And that can lead to surprises for others... Also, one of the first things we got taught was "a good shooter needs a minimum of 3-4 seconds between recognizing/identifying a target and releasing an aimed shot. ->That is the time you have to move between cover, so be fast and think ahead."

22:44 Yes, the austrian army did not wear "camo". But the thing is, with the colour our army chose (in 1975!) and the envirement here in austria, it still worked as good as any camo. (We tried it in 99 and were surprised how late someone with that colour gear and a little facepaint who did not move more than breathing was spotted with the naked eye.... way too late if he had a standard issue rifle, and in one case even too late if he had a knife! 🫣 Partially it was to show us fresh conscripts how to camo ourselves and what to avoid in position ect.) And about the cardio thing, i also commented that on the AUG video if i remember correct: when i was in (99/00) our army still had it's emphasis on "being able to reach destination without motorized transport" or let's just say we "hiked" almost everywhere... And that means that if you (for once) get the luxury of being transported by a motorized vehicle (or heli) you have all the stamina left to use. Anyways, what a nice birthday present to have 2 videos of the sniper rifle (with the longest service record) of my home country! Thanks guys! Would give more than one 👍if i could 😎 Btw.: the magazine should be able to be lowered one notch. this allows for single loading wihtout engaging the first round of the mag. Hard to believe this weapon system is a 1960~1970 made, still runs like a champ as nowadays rifles.

When I think of this rifle, I think of this; Make it right, keep it lite. Later on, Steyr did it again with the STG-77. Crazy! Great review!

I found this video from the @ForgottenWeapons video. As I said there, I own a Steyr Mannlicher Model L in 22-250 and it is still my favorite rifle. Geat video!

Rifle needs a more powerful scope with a better reticle to bring it to current standards. As for accuracy, it could go to out 1000 yards (914 meters) with more powerful glass. Back in the '60s there were no pure sniper rifles from factory.

I had one of these years ago. It was in the original configuration with matching scope. BTW, the original scope that rifle came with was Khales ZF69 6x42

Throughout the course, I was holding my breath. I thought the Steyr was going to dethrone the FR-F1 as the DMR course record holder with a clean run. Then the Bambi plate at 720 broke my heart. Still, great work Henry and Josh!

That rifle has been at the top of my wish list since I saw one in Lone Wolf McQuade. But it’s always been outside my budget. Scarcity and appreciation have kept the rifle out of reach despite any income increases. But it’s still at the top of my wish list.

Thank you, I am one of the ones that requested this review. The only two complaints I have ever seen on these rifles are mag problems an some complaints about brittle stock. Thank again for the review ,nine hole style!

Kahles is a subsidiary of Swaro. It allows them to remain snooty and appeal to the Fudd crowd and distance themselves from the Tacticool crowd. Glass comes from the same place but the Kahles designs are different. Swaro scopes are generally a little better when compared apples to apples. Check out the Dark Lord of Optics if you want more details

Fun fact: The barrel is mated to the receiver by heating the receiver and inserting the barrel, then allowing the receiver to cool.
