I know I have made several other videos like this in the past but I feel it is always a good reminder to remember to stick to the basics when making a diagnosis. We don't always need to go digging deep when the problem is right in front of us. -Enjoy!

True. I had a friend in March I said "dude, why did a critter bite through your spark cables again. And get new O2 Sensors and new AC sensor. Ask insurance, pay the 150 Euro fee for the shop and let it get fixed, it's around 600 Euros." He didn't because Corona and having no money, he only bought cheap cables (I put in Magnet Marelli in December for 33 bucks, the cheap no-name cables cost 42) and let another "friend" who "knows how to fix cars" install them. They called me the car wont run anymore. I asked if they switched the cables and with it the firing order. "Nooo he knows what he is doing". I packed my stuff, drove over and start diagnosing: Spark was ok Every cylinder did somehow work because unplugging made it worse I followed the lines and what do you think it was? Right, they fucked up the order by 90 degrees. Fixing it, it worked and the car ran fine. He still didn't put in new O2s and the cables were toast and checking it with a scanner showed strange Lambda readings. In Mai, the engine blew up. New car, he let the other guy put on the winter tires. "What torque did you use?" - "130 nm" - "dude, these are steel rims, its 110" - "no my uncle said.." Needless to say, the steering wheel went all over and he needed new rims they bent because the cheap torque wrench must have been set to 150 or more or was badly calibrated. That was just this year and only one friend.

I am 31 and went through the GM ASEP program when I was 18, quit the dealer at 19 one year through my 2 year program and went to a smaller independent shop like yours where I spent 10 years working there making a good living. Things changed as I got older and that all fell through when I came in one morning and was fired on the spot. I had been talking to our Napa sales rep about possibly starting my own place in the future, months before I was let go, which both of my bosses must have caught wind of and fired me two weeks before Christmas. Our first born son was 4 months old at the time. I looked at it as a big opportunity and a blessing in disguise. About a month later I found an old smaller shop to rent down the road from where I live in Wisconsin and the rest is history. I do everything on my own at my shop and it has been a great first 2 years, far beyond what I expected. Would just like to say thank you for the heavy diagnostic videos. I feel this is an area being a technician you can always learn more about and always better yourself while diagnosing difficult issues.

New Cats sell for big bucks. It's been a few years since I sold parts but I recall they were about $400 each and many cars had two. The kind you weld in, versus bolt on, were cheaper. But either way, the parts salesman hit the jackpot selling two cats and a couple sensors to this customer. That's a fat commission coming their way. We were told, never argue with a customer if they come in wanting to buy a cat or a whole crate engine. Don't diagnose your way out of a sale. Just sell it. And that's what happened here. Not one person in that parts store all the way up to the district manager will be sad to hear a worker sold two cats.

Even if someone else in the same shop as me has looked at something I just start fresh when I do diags. You never know when they've skipped something or just forgotten to check the basics. Like my most recent blunder, I forgot to check the bulbs on a headlight that kept blowing fuses, 1.5 hours in before I realised the dead short was in the bulb and I hadn't actually isolated the circuit at all connectors. I had pulled the headlight out, but got had to give a hand to a co-worker for a minute, when I got back I'd totally forgotten I didn't actually unplug the headlight so I just went for the electronics box, then moved on to chasing wires. Luckily for the customer the truck in question was on a service plan so it didn't end up costing them anything extra other than some downtime which was already planned anyway.

Give it a good stretch, too. Either as you apply it, or beforehand if the wire is real floppy. The tape will contract almost like shrink tubing and give a good seal. I saw him stretch it a little bit but I'm talking 50% more. So take 6" and make it 9". I know it's only temporary, but so many times temporary becomes "until it breaks again." My grandfather taught me that trick 20 something years ago. He worked for Nynex and Bell Atlantic out in the elements.

The 4-liter six had a misfire and I figured since the plug wires were 8 years old, it might be a good idea to change them out in any case. No sooner had I pulled the boot off the #2 plug, I found the problem. The boot connection felt like a loose tooth, and when I cut the boot open, the inner core was literally hanging by a thread. It snapped with a gentle pull. I went ahead and changed out the rest of the wires, and when I fired it up, the engine was running smooth as silk. It was the first time I ever had a plug wire go bad.

High and dry in NM but time eventually murders anything rubber and the bug to cap post arcing in the cap erodes the posts. Scraping the bug and posts just leaves overly large gaps. The cat may be able to clean itself and clear the code in a short time now that one cylinder isn't dumping raw gas into it and tripping the code - if caught early enough that the cat isn't roasted.

I built a 15+ year relationship with a family owned shop and even though I frequently have a good idea of the diagnosis all I pass on to them are my observations. Such as recently had a no crank on our Toyota Corolla. Measured battery voltage = around 12.7. Tapped starter, car cranked right up. Told them the same info. They diagnosed and put on the new starter. Mechanic said that that's exactly what he would have done but he liked my observations because it kept cranking for them and wouldn't fail. And he checked the charging voltage (as I did after I got it started and it was good) and did a quick battery load test and it passed. No crank issues since. In the past I would have put the starter on myself but I chose not to for two reasons: first working on cars is getting painful (arthritis) and more importantly I knew that their business had suffered due to Covid and my business could help them towards staying in business.

I still find myself wanting to replace sensors as a first step from time to time but always think of your videos as a reminder to start simple. The biggest lesson I learned is to test the sensor to verify the scan was accurate. Works every time.

I would run the car to see if the cat efficiency recovered , they are remarkably resilient, do a post fix emission test then ask him to drop in two weeks later and do another. I have done this after fitting new plugs on a citroen, the owner had paid twice for them to be "replaced" but they were not and she had been conned, the plugs were factory fit, the gaps massive . New plugs and all the problems went away no intermittant misfire under load, performance came back and emissions became normal as the cat became self cleaning.

I’ve wondered about this idea of a cat regaining its top efficiency after some minor issues. Bank 1 works but not as quickly as bank 2. Could be normal, but I think it’s due to leaking valve stem seals. Changed seals and hoped to see positive results. No codes , just observation on my 97 f150 4.6l with 250k. Thanks food for thought

I always blip the throttle so that the mixture goes rich then let it die to idle often with live data you can see the oxygen sensor trying to work and with time some do come back and start working then the cat can try and become self cleaning. Oxygen sensors do become slow in switching with age and perhaps 100,000 miles they should be changed after all they do live in an unforgiving enviroment.

Many, MANY years ago I had a Gremlin (I6) that had a severe misfire when it was damp. New plugs, wires, cap rotor, still no joy. One evening I happened to have the hood up and the engine running (not a great idea) and noticed some blue sparkage. After further inspection, there was a carbon arc from the coil tower, under the center wire and down the back side of the coil to the ground strap. A good cleaning with brake cleaner and a rag reduced, but did not eliminate the amount of this blue "lightening". This track was black (on a black coil) and mostly hidden. I never replaced the coil, because the car got replaced in a few weeks !

Great video. Pro or amateur, that "broad-to-narrow" perspective is so important. As a DIY for 40 years, I keep a mental sticky note in my head: Fuel, Spark, Compression - in the correct Quantity, Quality and Timing. It reminds me not to go down rabbit holes until I've exhausted the basics. Most ECUs we commonly see fail at our shop fail due to corrosion(a lot get mounted in the frame, or on the gearbox/engine), get the plugs wrecked by technicians and get corrosion in the connections, fail due to software update hiccups corrupting the memory chips in some unrecoverable way, or get "bit rot"/memory faults. Some older ECUs specific to our trucks would break due to lack of mechanical support of the PCB inside the casing since they didn't pot them back then. TBF most automotive ECUs are very reliable as far as electronics go, sensors are less so, especially those close to the emissions, but improving there as well.
