Knowing that most small mammals have some pretty quick reflexes, they almost always sink down, steeling themselves for a leap. Even deer do this. If they can see the quick jerk on release of a bow string you can bet that there will be reflex movement. Knowing this I STILL have missed shots, shooting just over the top of animals, dang it! I still remember some almost guaranteed broadside shots I made decades ago that just missed, going just over the top! A person should focus on the spot they want to hit then aim to hit at least 1 to 2 inches underneath that spot. If they don't flinch, you still hit them but if they do flinch then your spot on! My hits have risen a fair amount since adopting this policy! If you have successfully still hunt an animal and they don't see you shoot then all the better but that's not the norm. Remember, their life depends on quick reflexes.

Nice vid. My tips: Rabbits that have been shot over recently are more easily spooked. Depending how heavily hunted over then they can stay in hiding from 10 to 20 minutes; but their need to feed is high. Their natural flight instinct is about 65m so getting under that takes some stalking. Ground wind is the one to watch for, sky lighting too. Try and hunt over land that hasn't been hunted over for at least a couple of weeks. Anywhere there has been no hunting or dog walkers are half as difficult. The chop does work, but can be bruising. if you need to do a few then neck stretch is better; just do it with a straight arm. Like pulling a bow. ATB

the challenge of hunting small game with a recurve bow is satisfying. Using broadheads is also very humane.
@christopherrowley7506
@christopherrowley7506 4 жыл бұрын
using any head is pretty humane for rabbits. Some even say that blunt impact tips are more humane because they transfer more force into the target, and so disrupting the nervous system is more likely. I'm not sure which is better, but at 4:11 here you can see the guy needs to hit the rabbit in the back of the head to finish him off. My opinion is anything that gets the rabbit in the pan without undue suffering is probably fine

@@niksutherland4280 interesting haven't heard that before, makes sense though. Although on accident I once only brought out field points and still killed 4 cottontails. 3 went down pretty quick, the other needed a follow up. But still not too bad, the boys here with broadheads needed to follow one up with a head bonk. I definitely would never use field points against anything better, and I'll use small game points if I have em. But they didn't serve to too poorly for those few I got

The european rabbit lives in hives and holes. And they have holes everywhere. Often there is a hole beside where they are. So we need something to get stuck in the rabbit, so they cant escape into the holes and die slow. So besides that it is not leagal to use any stump head on smallgame here, unless the bow and arrow can deliver 70 joules of kinetic energy. So we use broadheads

Not a crappy shot at all, considering a rabbit will always 'duck the string' ie duck down when it hears the string released, that's why you always aim lower for rabbits and be sure to have very good string silencers.

@@normdunbar2943 good advice for any game, deer squirrel, whatever. That and having an animal committed to a movement and unaware of your presence. Don’t you hate it when they start ducking the shot like at 5:15, I wouldn’t say it was crappy I think you’re being hard on yourself, you’d have hit the spine/kidneys if he hadn’t moved. Sneaking up on them with a bow is hard enough (the ones on my lawn now run when the house door opens) adding a camera and tripod makes it really tough. Maybe a head mounted camera would help?

Have you tried using Judo points? I found I spent too long looking for arrows after pass throughs or misses, but I use a compound at the moment. The judo points sometimes go in anyway but I haven’t had a pass through yet, and they snag up in the grass well so they don’t travel on too far and are easy(er) to find when you miss. Or are broadheads a legal requirement?
@peterjuulsgaard
@peterjuulsgaard 5 жыл бұрын
Stuart Smith actually broadheads are legal requirement with a tradbow, because of the rules we have on kinetic energy. Compounds can use stump heads. I did that my self, back when I was shooting compounds. And it worked as you said. With the arrow stuck in’em. We are not loosing the arrows that often with the tradbow, though.

Lots of guys, not too long ago, busted rabbits and other small game with traditional bows with wooden arrows and metal blunts covered with rubber blunts. Two older guys I know could knock squirrels from trees and I watched one of them pick off birds. Comes from constant use of the bow and lots of stump shooting. You should try it.

I'm looking to get a longbow or recurve bow. What is the minimum draw weight for small game. I want to be sure I can kill a small game animal but I don't think I can do the 40 pound draw weight that is for large game. Is 20, 25, or 30 lb draw weight good enough to kill a rabbit or other small game? You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find an answer to that question. I've looked for 2 weeks and no answer. I know for large game the minimum draw weight requirement is 40 lb but small game I can't find it.
@peterjuulsgaard
@peterjuulsgaard 4 жыл бұрын
I dont think it have much to do with pounds! I think you can kill rabbits with a 25 pound bow, if you are using sharp heads and you are hitting them in the right spot! In our country we need 40 joules of kinetic energy by law to hunt with a bow, so therefore we need 40 to 50 pounds to maintain that!
@Carpaintry_of_God
@Carpaintry_of_God 4 жыл бұрын
@@peterjuulsgaard Thank you, I did end up calling the local Hunting Game Commission, after you got back to me. They said they're is no regulation draw weight on Small game animals. And a minimum of 35 draw weight for large game. I think I'll get a 25 pound bow for the small game. Thank you. And that's crazy you need to pull that much. I'm surprised you all can hold that much for every draw. You guys must all be lumber jacks.

Judos are not leagal for hunting here in this country! And blunt heads in general are only leagal with 70 joules of kinetic energy. So better use broadheads, than going to jail 😀. The chop in the back of the neck, is how we do it, if they aren’t dead. Thanks for watching
