Sticky Console Buttons & Cleaning Them Out

Just a short video on trying to free up my sticky console buttons. I used 70% Isopropyl Alcohol and some Q-tips to get the alcohol down into the glue. Then following up with some dental floss to get that nasty mess out--like you floss your teeth. Worked well without having to take the console apart.

Tip: I just used a tiny diabetic needle to inject isopropyl alcohol around/ under a couple sticky buttons in a Mercedes. Worked like a charm and instantly!

Thanks, you saved me a trip to the dealer. I cleaned the go back button with alcohol and freed it with a safety pin. Then used the alcohol and it goes in and out again and infotainment system is working again. Thanks.

I spilled some Gatorade in my car and 4 buttons were completely stuck. It was bothering me so much that I was planning to take it to the dealership which would have cost hundreds of dollars. I tried your suggestions and it WORKED!!! Thank You!!!! Thank You!!! You mentioned using plastic to push the floss down...I used the plastic from the floss package and it worked perfectly. I ran it around the entire button and did not need to use floss. Thank You again for saving me money, time, and inconvenience. Thank You!!!

Came here because the passenger heated seat button in my Porsche was stuck (it sits right under the cupholder so condensation drips all over it). This video helped, I just let isopropyl run down in the cracks around the button and used a pick tool to work it around. Works perfectly now!

This was driving me crazy on my C-class, and I just spilled some coffee in my M4 so now the buttons are sticky too. Super helpful since I really didn't want to pop out all the buttons

Yeah I was able to clean out the buttons pretty darn well. Don’t use waxed dental floss!!!

How I never thought about this method is beyond me but it helped a ton my guy! My c300 buttons on the dynamic select & the eco mode button would get stuck so bad cause a little soda got in it & not they’re like before!

Just bought an Audi S4 (2017 model) and clearly the previous driver had the same problem as the infotainment controls are behind the cup holders, just like the merc shown, and they are sticking a little. Thanks for the tips on this one dude! Helps a bunch for sure

@@neelpatel7905 not really, slightly but nowhere near the amount that I wanted. it seems like it's going to have to be taken apart which I really don't want to do so I'm probably just going to live with it

I'll let it completely dry afterwards and put it back together. I will say that it seems going into the winter months, it won't stick as bad as the humid heat of summer

@@JC-pc1xz Thank you for the reply! Always seems like youtube is the last place that I expect any decent feedback on. I DID fix it, I ended up taking the whole MMI out, disassembled it and clean the circuit board with electronics alcohol. I then used a steamer to work the buttons and plastics until i had a smooth travel when pressed. put everything back together and its like new!

Spilled coffee in my Benz it’s got the same exact buttons and the alcohol helped until it got cold again then it started sticking

Heads up!!! The alcohol will dissolve the finish on a 2019 F150. I would recommend a less aggressive cleaner to loosen gunk and maybe compressed air to blow it out.

On my Kona the console buttons are flat. Some coffee (with milk) must have gotten under the Reverse button. I simply poured IPA around the edges of the button. I used a screwdriver touching the lip of the IPA (70%) bottle to direct the flow into the button crack, otherwise the liquid would flow down the side of the bottle. It freed up the stuck button. No floss or Q-Tips needed. Thank you for 1) deciding it is safe to have liquid under the buttons, and 2) using alcohol (better solvent) instead of hot water.

May I add a suggestion of using non waxed floss. The wax might leave a sticky substance in its own right. I would recommend a non waxed floss. But please let me know if the wax provides a better “pick up” factor.

Might just have to sell the car. Let it go! 😂 this method in the video has worked for me on many different scenerios. I would use it liberally around the button and try to get it to soak on the sticky button and see if it works loose. You can use a dental pick to pop the button back up. Some vehicles are built that the buttons actually pop off. I wasn’t willing to try prying it completely out on the Mercedes.

Dang! Well I definitely wouldn’t get rid of it either! I’d try the alcohol trick, might get lucky. I certainly wouldn’t pour it in there but be liberal with it. I have used the aerosol electric contact cleaner in the Land Rover before and was successful. You have to use a microfiber to make sure you also don’t spray everything else

I would be extremely careful with contact cleaner. In my experience, it is very harsh on the finish of breaker panels and it bleach’s paint fast, so I would assume it would be bad for the plastic buttons in your vehicle.
