very much yes. the guard really helps with those mulching blades.

Depends on what you call risk, rocks/branches/sticks being thrown back at you? That does happen frequently yes. usually towards your lower legs and rarely up to the face (which is why I definitly do recommend a helmet with a face shield) the guard does mitigate that somewhat but does not stop it from happening completely and the guard also gets in the way A LOT when cutting thick/dense vegetation or thorns. I prefer working without the guard on for that reason and it allows you more freedom of use on different angles, I do however wear those really thick logger/lumberjack/forestry pants that avoid majority of the things being thrown back at you from injuring you. I have been using these blades pretty much daily for the last 9 years without a guard and haven't had any injury. This kind of equipment is dangerous either way with or without a guard on and it generally comes down to what you feel comfortable with
