The 462 should really be designated the 442. The 46 variants before the 462 were 76cc, the 462 is 1cc difference from the 441. Nice saw. Would really like to get my hands on a 462. Or a well kept 461.

Hi, I’m new to your channel but I want to let you know I bought the 500 I I love it. It’s a great saw. I also have a MS 291 that’s great too and I also have a small trim saw I’m a steel chainsaw, man love them, great video 👍

Man! Another great real world head-to-head saw test! It seems like the 500i weight/power ratio is hard to beat. My MS390 definitely cuts better when you pry on it, it lacks some in chain speed but it’s torquey!

The old saws definitely have the torque, when the 500 runs right it’s hard to beat. I still Love my 462 though!

Thanks! The 461 was not retuned, neither of us are great at tuning carbs so we wouldn’t take the chance of messing it up. Somtimes I think the microphone or camera angle distorts the noise and makes it sound different.

My takeaway from this video is that they're all good saws, and have very close performance to each other. I don't think that you can go wrong with any of them.

All the years I worked clearing right of ways for power companies in 4 states and logging in 2 and a lot of personal/private work I never came across anyone that had a 462 or the 500,but I have many that owned the 046,460,and 461's. I have a Jred 670 Champ I bought new back around '92-93 and still run today (added a new ring in '14) and it's been used well over 20,000 hrs just on right of way work. That lil ol Jred will out cut the 3 previous ones and smoke the 044,440,441's,an they're only 66.7-.8cc,and we have at times swapped out both saws with brand new chains just to prove it's the saw and just not the person sharpening it that was the problem. After the ol 670 they didn't want anything to do with the 2077 that's the same cc. We all ran the same 24" (Stihls great measuring 25") bars and chisel tooth chains and always tried to have a 20-24" log to run through when we'd compete on the job. I have only ever came across one (1) good running Stihl that also started like a saw should by the 2nd pull if not the 1st....it was a 038 Mag that was 4 yrs old and rebuilt as many times... Stihl is an over priced over marketed pile of garbage....as is everything with the Stihl name. I always yelled to get the attention of the guys I worked with/around that ran Stihl that was standing there pulling 4-5-6-10 times (sometimes even on their warm ones) to get their junk started... Then I'd pull out either Jred,that may not have been started all weekend whether it was -20*F or 126 and on the 1st pull (with pullcord that's been broken numerous times and is now only a 8" pull) it'd fire up. At that I'd yell...... "STIHL,STILL WON'T START"..and laugh. Boy they'd be so mad...HAHAHA!!! Then they'd get even more pissed if I'd keep pulling on the cord while it's still running mimicking them.... :D

@@rider660r as many years that you have logged and cut right away, you should be too old to ride a raptor 660r, I misjudged that as a hidden obsession for a Stihl 660. I’m sure it wouldn’t outcut your 66cc JRed with 20,000 hours though,it is just getting broken in. When the rings seat in good, watch out.

@@saltymofo5870 You know what they say about ASSuming... Know many who ride that are much older and one my father knew that won national hill climbs on 125's and 250's in the 80's and still climbed for fun into their late 60's or 70's. 20k is just an estimate adding up my 40hr weeks and side jobs plus personal work for 10yrs while cutting for power. The saw probably has twice that on it if I could remember all the hours and jobs I've cut to include logging and all the personal/private work it has done. BTW,my channel/user name is 18yrs old...

Would be a good test if you actually had sharp chains. You should have invested that money in a decent grinder instead.
@765Guys

I should sharpen new chains? What if I sharpened one better than the other and it changed the results? I’m not opposed to sharpening new chains to get the best possible cut but I don’t think I could do 3 identical like the factory does.

@@765Guys Chains out of the box are not as sharp as they can be, when you have a good grinder and its set up right it is easy to get consistent results and they will cut faster. The rakers need to be dropped to thirty thousandths too for bigger saws like the ones your running.
@rider660r
@rider660r 4 ай бұрын
@@timberray9572You're true on a chain isn't as sharp as they can be out of the box,but no grinder is going to get it there either. Old fashion hand sharpening is the only way. If one takes their time they can get two chains equal by hand....no I don't mean 100% exactly nor do I mean after hours of filing. IDK how many 1000's of chains I have sharpened over the decades,but every one of them have been done by hand. You have no time in the woods to go back to the log yard/truck,etc. and hook up a grinder nor do you want to pack around extra chain all day day in and day out that you may need but may not and may even run out of on a bad day. That garbage is for homeowners and their Wild Things.... Rakers,well it all depends on what your cutting also. Soft wood you can go a lil lower than you would on them if you're in hard wood all the time and then if it's dead even less. I always just went about the depth of a credit card thickness as I cut all types most of the time. If one lowers the rakers to much it's hard on the chain,bars,sprockets and the actual saws.

@@rider660r For you loggers it makes sense to hand file chains, you have to be mountain goats and every extra pound matters when you have to haul it yourself. I'm a firewood cutter like the guys in the video and we can easily pack a few extra chains on our vehicles. I for one grind all my chains and I know they are a lot faster than out of the box. I'm not claiming to have the sharpest chain in the world. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7iimreW1p6og4U.html

@@timberray9572 I see yeah maybe if you're right there 20' from your truck I may just swap a chain,but I'd still prefer to take 5-10 min sharpen them as much as I hate sharpening to start with...but I hate dull even more. To me,there's nothing worse than sharpening a new chain....the file barely fits and you have to fight it to get a few small swipes before it cuts enough to smooth out the gullet from that stinking hump the factory leaves from the grinding.
