I agree with you. The Werewolf stages were just too long. They should of had the wolf be a separate character like Sonic Adventure so you wont be forced to do the bad game play varieties.

it is from sonic 2 - hidden palace zone, the stage itself has been removed from the game but the song was accessible from the sound test, if I remember correctly.

a fun little fact to throw out there the day time stages were done by dimps the guys that did the sonic rush games and sonic advanced while team sonic by temselvs did the night stages very interesting

when it comes to my own personal taste in gaming i need the platforming of the night time levels to break up the speedyness of the daytime levels

A representative from Sonic Team said that to just make a fast running Sonic game in full 3D would take a whole lot of work. They would have to map out thousands of miles of track, (with the power of 360 & PS3 graphics) not to mention alternate paths, and even then the game would be over in a few hours. If ask me you take the fact that you have to render all that background that's going to flash by in just a period of milliseconds is almost a waste of time. This is why they keep experimenting.

i totally agree i gave up on this game sooo quickly because of the warehog crap but i did try to give it a chance but it was way too slow and the controls were awcward as hell fingers crossed they will get it right eventially. great review.

just wondering have u ever played God of War or Devil May Cry? Also the reason why most people hated the werehog stages was because sonic was supposed to be a speed game rather than a ummm kick everybody's ass and solve couple of issues game

I might do a Snapshots review of the Wii version someday since the levels are completely different, but in my opinion it's even worse than the 360 version. Which reminds me about two other Sonic games I need to get to....

Sorry, Lee, but for once, I have to completely disagree with you. I just got Sonic Unleashed a week ago, and it's been the only thing I've cared about the whole time. I was completely blown away. I'd call it one of the best games ever. Chip's a lot less annoying in Japanese, by the way.

I gave up on 3D Sonic after Sonic Heroes... I still LOVE the retro sonic games, but gun, sword, werehog or not, I'm not bothering with another Sonic game for a long while. I saw some Sonic and the Black Knight gameplay after this review just to check it out, and to be honest, it looked pretty lack-luster. Not trying to piss off any Sonic fans, I love the old series, honestly, but as far as I'm concerned Sonic has been dead to me for a while now. Excellent review as always, Lee!

I liked the werehog, if they put Knuckles in that spot with no other changes, you wouldn't have heard half of people bitching over it.

this was a really good review, especially when you've already known about the bad parts. Though is sonic team trying to lose people? all's they had to do with this is not have the damn horrible idea of the werehog...

Night stages are fun. And if you don't want to get medals for the next level, pick the Wii version and keep in mind you can use a classic controller (if you have one) so you don't have to swing your wiimote.

Sonic games aren't getting worse, they're just as good as they've always been and you need to understand that they need to change the way the game plays to fit today's tech, today a lot of people think of Sonic as a joke but personally I think Sonic is the best character in video game history, the games are special and are completely original, that's why I will keep playing Sonic.

This was my first main-console Sonic game. (I grew up with a Nintendo family.) So I love it to pieces. I love the graphics, the voice acting, and I LIKE the werehog stages. And the story is actually intriguing. I adore this game.

Frustrating thing is that this game was supposed to be ALL day levels and was initially supposed to be Sonic Adventure 3, and round up all the loose ends in the SA storyline. But they tagged all that werehog crap on it. >:(

Agreed. If the game was just day stages, perhaps having even making it so it's like Sonic 3 & Knuckles so you could play as those three different characters, and keeping just those three and Robotnik, would be spectacular. However, you know the new generation gamers, and how they think it's just plain cool to be a "Werehog". Day stages are a step in the right direction for sega, though.

Hey, if you love the daytime levels you should buy the level packs on 360 or ps3. They you get alt least 3 more levels day stages to each world along with a special level that is similar to the main day level of each world but tweaked a whole bunch so its much more challenging. I think this is the best sonic game made in like ten years

As long as you don't go into it expecting another sonic game, but expect a good, slightly faster paced RPG, I think it'll be good fun. By which I mean Sonic and the Black Knight.

I have to say: I'm glad that whenever I get the urge to buy into a teaser trailer, I watch this video first. Otherwise I'd get a game like this. Although, one of my friends won it for FREE and hated it. You're a very sobering person.

Agreed. I think they could (and should) take the Werehog stages and use that as a template for playing as Knuckles. I hate it when people just say this game is awful with no reason, because it's really not awful. It's actually pretty good. (hooray for nonconformity!)

Sonic Colors is coming out in november 16, 2010 made by sega and dimps. the game is like sonic unleashed without the werehog. the writers of the game are Mad World and Happy Tree Friends. i saw the preview for the game and it is FANTASTIC. check it out right now on youtube. this game will blow you away

as a person who played both versions. Both the day and night stages (specially the PS3/360) version are horrible. Sonic stages were not meant to be just running through or horrible trial and error due to "blistering speed" Sonic since the old days has always been about speedy, fluid, platforming (Scrap brain, metropolis, marble, hill top, death egg are only a few stages that prove my point). the stage design after holoska was horrible.

Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast is by far the best 3-d sonic game to date. Any 3d sonic before total bomb.

Unleashed is nowhere near awful. The day stages, as you said, are superb. They're fun, great, well designed, and just a blast. The werehog isn't the greatest idea ever, no, but its gameplay is functional, deep, polished, and has some fun platforming bits. Compared to the boring, mundane shooting, item collecting, driving, fishinng, and other alternate gameplay from past Sonic games, the Werehog was fucking perfect.

Your Chip impression is hilarious!!! But yeah, this game was a dropped ball by SEGA. A potentially interesting new character (Were-hog, both gameplay and story) was dropped like hot potato. STILL, this game's amazing daytime stages and town hubs gives me great hope for a potential sequel.

This review is so true. I buy a Sonic game to play a fast paced platformer, not a f*cking beat em up, and a poorly designed beat em up at that too. I returned this crap a day after I bought it.

The Daytimes are great and Just because the Werehog is'nt like Sonic and it rips of God of War does'nt mean its bad, And is'nt annoying, He's funny and cute. And yes the medals can be a probelms but overall I give Sonic Unleashed (PS3/360 version) 9/10.
