The shift from a 20% to a 31% ownership rate of at least 3-year-old phones doesn't necessarily imply a widespread reliance on outdated phones. It signifies a notable change in consumer behavior, reflecting a departure from the trend of annual smartphone upgrades. This shift is not rooted in a preference for archaic devices; instead, it underscores the maturity of the smartphone market. Many individuals find that the smartphones purchased three years ago continue to meet their needs effectively, contributing to a more sustainable and economically prudent approach to technology consumption.

The device IS the problem if you're forced to upgrade it constantly. My beef is how you now 'have' to have a smartphone to get anything done, or verify a payment you make by card, etc. And I am VERY resistant to all my devices being connected via the Cloud. That's putting all our digital devices in one basket, so to speak. And that's dangerous. Somebody hacks into one of them, they have access to your entire digital life ...and very quickly, too. Okay, if that kind of connectivity is important to you, fair enough-get a smartphone with all the bells and whistles, and upgrade it every year, as the company wants you to. But suddenly it's being forced on all of us. And that's not good. I still use my Nokia StupidPhone to phone taxis and keep in touch if I need to, while I'm out. It's a pay as you go, and I sink about £50 a year into it. I know that's not going to be available forever, but until it's not, I'll continue using it. Our smartphone (Samsung Galaxy 12) lives in our piano bench and only gets fired up when a verification code is getting sent to it. And yes, I share it with my husband. We both have very up to date computers ...silicone chip, etc. But they live on our desks at home, and we're really happy with that setup. Not everybody has the same needs ...or the same income ...when it comes to digital life.

We’ve reached a point in tech where the cost of new devices continues to increase, while the capabilities of said new devices compared to old devices remain nearly the same. Most people nowadays couldn't survive half a day without tech. And then there's social media. First it was instant messaging, now it's the endless entertainment of TikTok, Instagram reels and YT shorts. People ask me why I don't use them. Then I ask them what was the last useful thing they saw on those platforms and that's where they get lost. They don't know because they can't remember anything they watched. It's disgusting.

My first 3 phones (out of a total of 4 overall) I kept for around 2-3 years, but my current phone I've used for the past five years. It just demonstrates that a flagship phone really can last if you're willing to hold on to it. Even the battery hasn't deteriorated that badly to a state where it is unusable, so I'll happily carry on. I probably will upgrade this year, however it has rarely given me any issues and it is the first smartphone I've managed not to crack the screen on so upgrading hasn't been a serious consideration for me so far. All being well, I do intend to keep future phones for a minimum of five years if I manage to look after it in the same way I have this one. Upgrading every year/two years is just wasteful in my opinion. Each to their own obviously, but it's just my nature to keep things in use as long as practically possible.

The good things I remember about the flip phones is they were more durable and could be used for a long time. The flip phones did not have the huge power consumption in comparison to the smart phones, so the batteries would last what seemed like forever. Also we used to be able to replace cell phone batteries. I think the flip phones are really better for durability, longer lasting, cost savings, and particularly they're better for people who are on the job, like outdoors, construction, "dirty jobs," etc. Just because they're more durable.
@ophtalmology
@ophtalmology 4 ай бұрын
Almost everything is false. If you take an iphone 13 pro max, disable literally everything and use it as a flip phone (a couple of sms messages and a few minutes of phone calls per day) it will last almost the same. You won’t achieve 10 hours of screen-on time on a flip phone. Flex cables on them were fragile, phones were afraid of water and so on. They survived drops a bit better only because of lots of cheap thick plastic and less weight instead of heavy glass and metal, nevertheless, the hinges did break off easily when they fell with the screen opened.
@DJ-yh8hm

@@ophtalmology Exactly! And there's no way a flip phone would achieve better results in drop test than 13 pro max. Old phones were cheap and plasticky. The battery was ok only because there wasn't really anything you could do with these phones other than calling and texting.

EU is mandating user swappable batteries by 2027, which I think is great as I feel like most people tend to upgrade when their battery starts to go bad, which they could replace for $50-$100 but don’t want to go through the hassle.
@DJ-yh8hm
@DJ-yh8hm 4 ай бұрын
@@johnmoore1495 That is an absolutely terrible idea. The price of the batteries will skyrocket. If you think this is a way people will outsmart companies like Apple you're naive. These phones will also lose water and dust resistance, will become less durable, and the batteries will be most likely difficult to get so people will end up going to repair shops anyway and won't replace them on their own.
@johnmoore1495
@johnmoore1495 4 ай бұрын
@@DJ-yh8hm I’m sure there’s rules written into the mandate saying companies can’t lock it down and only allow their software locked batteries, defeats most of the purpose at that point. The mandate states it has to be swappable by the layman. Samsung phones had water and dust resistance when they still had swappable batteries. You’re acting like phone companies can’t innovate in how they implement this. This is far better than phones turning into e-waste once the battery takes a crap and also makes battery recycling far easier. On Apple’s side it’ll make their whole environmental image look better as well.

It's not taboo to hold onto "old" tech that still works fine. It's not like things just suddenly stop working when they reach a certain age. I never really understood people that upgrade with every new generation of smartphones. The only things that I can think of, is that they treat it as a status symbol, or they're just investing into the progression of smartphone tech. If it really is the latter, then they're gravely mistaken, as apparent in apples practice of pumping out new phones every year with hardly and difference. I bought a Motorola Droid Razr back in 2011 and made it last until 2016. I then bought a Motorola Droid Turbo 2 and made that last until 2021. I now have a Samsung Galaxy A71 5G that will probably last until 2026 or 2027 depending on how well I treat it. It's not that I can't afford to upgrade every year, it's just that I don't see a point in wasting money every year just to get (a) slightly better camera(s) and ever so slightly faster processor, not to mention the fact that I used to work in the recycling industry and saw firsthand just how many phones are dropped off in a single day (roughly 25 pounds from a town of less than 40,000 residents). Considering the fact that those were just the people that decided to recycle and not thrown them in the trash, you really get a scope as to how much e-waste is made in a day worldwide, I don't want to be just another person unnecessarily creating more waste

Now that I think about it, I honestly don't even know why I upgraded from that phone to my current Xiaomi Mi 11 lite 5g. I even changed the batter for a new one on that old Xiaomi haha. Well at least it is being used again. Xiaomi sure knows how to make phones. Now that I remember, I bought the Redmi Note 5 used for $120 xD

I just upgraded from a Galaxy S8 plus I bought in June 2019 to a Note 10 plus last month due to just regular wear and tear not to mention having to replace the internal battery twice, the usb-c port, it had developed a shadow burn in on the screen and it started acting sluggish when using certain apps.

Sometimes i‘m not available, even with a new phone, and sometimes even for days. I’m just not that important and i have enough self control to keep it in the pocket or even at home. It’s not that hard, and it has nothing to do with using old or new tech…

I recently found an old iPad 3 and my iPhone 5S. The iPad works really well and even runs older versions (or even the latest ones) of all the apps, with the exclusion of KZfaq which opens but gives an error when you try to play a video likely because the servers for that version have been shut down. The iPhone 5S is a bit cracked, but works really well and still works with most apps. This proves that you don't need to update to the latest iPhone every year but more every 5-6 years.

I perhaps would not mind having a basic flip phone. But I still want to be able to easily text on it, and have versions of my most important apps on there, such as my banking primary email and a decent enough camera. I would use that as my daily driver I keep with me, but keep my regular smartphone at home like to use at night. I dont want easy access to anything which tempts me to become unnecessarily addicted to it or demands too much of my attention.

Durability is the real issue. older phones were less likely to break then modern phones. I have an old flip phone built like a tank. It was literally designed not to break. I am one of the very few in my social circle to keep phones for 4 to 5 years. But since prices have jumped in 3-5 years I plan to keep my phone longer. Everyone is different though, some people want to upgrade every year and live on bleeding edge of technology. Like my parents said, as long as there is demand, "they" will continue release new phones every year. Great to see consumer behaviour changing though 20% to 31% is a huge shift in my opinion. Whatever phone you're using enjoy it but also consider it a privilege as not everyone in the world has access to a phone, nevermind the latest & greatest model.

If you use S7, you are probably more vulnerable to online security threats, hacks etc. So you better not have any banking info or anything valuable stored on the phone. Also the battery degrades rapidly after 2 or 3 years so you would have to buy new battery. For the cost of new battery, buying a new but midranger phone for cheap is worth it compared to a new battery on a really old device. Not only the security would be better but you can now download apps that are updated for security and features.
