(Final poem from 'Maya Angelou - Live and Unplugged')
Still I Rise
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
[There I go!]

This woman changed my view on literature during the end of my school days. I went from the edge of failure and not attending lessons to getting a B in the final tests. My teacher loved Maya Angelou and taught her words with all the passion and emotional she could, she believed in the beauty of the words Maya Angelou spoke. She's motivated me to start writing myself and I will be uploading these on my channel. I may not be able to speak words like Maya Angelou but there's an unbelievable sense of fulfilment in expressing yourself in writing. I hope she can rest knowing how many people she has inspired and gave meaning into their lives.

It’s 2023 and … I just wonder how much longer art like this will be allowed in certain schools. If you were in one of those schools today would you have been pulled back from the edge? Are there kids now being denied that experience and shift in perspective? These kids have already had so much disruption in their lives and schooling with the covid stuff. They have lost so much and people are fighting to rob them of even more. It’s a tragedy.

Even Christ had haters, MLK had haters, MALCOLM X had haters, Harriet Tubman and Angela Davis has haters sister. Black women particularly have many haters because we have the womb that holds all humanity. Read 📚 about the Eve gene? Many of those thumbs down are of the WS persuasion, as well, are supporters of WS ideology. That's why her message is SO relevant. Because TRUTH brings forth the travailing of CONVICTION of looking into the mirror of one's soul. As well the disdainment of knowing that THE OPPRESSED has just uncovered and overcomed the OPPRESSORS intention. #STILLIRISE! Which was to KILL STEAL and DESTROY, the HOPES and Dreams of our Ancestors. And here we ARE. 💃🏿💃🏿💃🏿🤜🏾🤛🏽🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🤗

The specific line about diamonds is in the context of several other lines where Angelou mentions "gold" and "oil", suggesting that she intends to speak in general about what we economists call extractive resources---the sort of resource that a single company can come in and take to sell without the help of a broader society and government. These kinds of resources are systematically associated with corrupt and oppressive governments, because while they are extremely valuable on the market, unlike other sources of wealth such as land, factories, and an educated population, they can be easily taken and moved elsewhere and don't depend upon having a stable system of public policy to support them. This is called the resource curse. It's unlikely that Maya Angelou had the details of this economic process in mind, but she intuitively sensed that resources such as gold, oil, and diamonds are systematically linked to oppression. She wouldn't use the example of corn or automobiles to make the point, because these aren't extractive commodities. Angelou describes herself (specifically implying her genitals and therefore her sexuality) as being this sort of commodity, which represents her as a thing of value---simultaneously valuable and treated as a thing to be possessed and sold by others, exactly the way slaves were treated. It may also be significant that gold, oil, and diamonds are all resources which are abundant in Africa, the continent from where the vast majority of slaves in the US were taken. But the poem ends quite optimistically, repeating "I rise, I rise, I rise"---perhaps reflecting how civil rights have gradually but steadily improved over time, and Angelou's belief that they will continue to do so.

Her reading her own poem to us touches and inspires me even more because not only is she reading her own words but she is saying and expressing them from her heart and soul, just like I bet she did when she first wrote that poem. But at the same time with the poem’s comedy and how she talks and expresses it in a comedic way, I couldn't help but laugh a bit. So it brought me to tears both tears of joy and laughter.

Today is my brother's birthday. A year ago he was a vibrant 71 year old, but today, due to an accident followed by neglect in hospital and facilities; Due to the COVID-19 restrictions preventing us from being advocates at his bedside... My brother is a quadriplegic and double amputee. Bedridden, my brother ministers to more people than far too many able- bodied folk. He asked why i thought he was still here given the many times the family was told to "come quickly so you may say your goodbyes." I immediately recalled this poem and shared it with him. We are not done until GOD said we are done. In the meantime, brother's and sisters, RISE!!!! (and keep Norman in your prayers in his determination to walk again. )
