Still the best hybrid SUV? 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid review: GXL | Nissan X-Trail ePower rival tested!

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is the best-selling family SUV in Australia for good reason. After all, it's a former CarsGuide Car of the Year winner, so it's proven itself as the best in its segment when the pressure was at its highest.
But it's been four years since the current-generation RAV4 Hybrid was released, and since then newer and more innovative rivals have arrived in the form of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (plug-in hybrid) and Nissan X-Trail ePower (range-extending electric vehicle). Needless to say, the competition's got a lot tougher, regular model-year updates or not.
So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Emily Agar spends a week with the RAV4 Hybrid's mid-spec GXL grade to see if it still sets the benchmark for families that not only value practicality, but also fuel efficiency and/or eco credentials.

I have the same car 2023 model.I did not mind waiting for it. Why? Because for me, endurance, reliability and resale value are the top three priorities in a car which I know Toyota will deliver. I also know those priorities differ significantly for all. What do they say? All people are different people. And hence, everyone chooses what is right for them. After all, there are numerous car manufacturers across the world to suit everyone’s budget and likes. I am aware that there are many things that Toyota really needs to catch up on to remain competitive in the current market (like the multimedia) just like how I feel the IPhones are, against the Android devices. In a nutshell, I am happy with this car. Thanks for reading all! Peace out!

The biggest issue must be the wait times for hybrid Toyotas. Around the end of Feb 2023, the wait time for a Rav4 hybrid was 2-2.5 years (!) for the two Northern shore dealerships in Sydney that I approached. The Toyota salespeople told me they can’t guarantee the final purchase price or spec of vehicle, so your $1k AUD deposit only buys you a place in the queue, not a down payment on a real car contract. Based on that, I didn’t bother test driving the Rav4.

Have a look at the alternative like MG phev and the Havel hybrid I did my conclusion it's not a inferior product to Toyota

I ordered mine in March 22 and got it one year later. Well the good thing is that i got the 2023 variant with the new infotainment sys. Worth waiting.

I have a 2023 Rav4 in the UK. Fantastic car. But why is the interior so different here in UK than Australia.

I'm pretty sure she got the late 2022 model. Cause I know the 2023 model has a full digital dash and the infotainment unit doest gave buttons on the sides except for a volume knob.

My grandparents have a silver Toyota RAV4 and I drove it once and it seemed a bit gutless and sluggish like it had no power to drive up very steep hilly roads because they live in Innisfail and there is a lot of hilly roads around there and every time I went past a school down the road from their house it would have the school detector sensor thing going off even though it wasn’t during school hours I found it pretty annoying and the ride was a bit firm for me

What's the point when it takes over a year to get one. At this rate put your unborn child on the waiting list and they will be lucky to get one before they retire.

RAV 4 HYBRID underwhelming driving experience with good economy. X Trail E Force superb driving experience with 15% more fuel, great silence, silky smooth and responsive.

2 year wait time on pretty well the Same care from 2019…. The white goods of the automotive world (very good hybrid tech but cabin technology is woeful)

I thought the infotainment system was updated for 2023 models plus the wait time is over a year. Pretty disappointing. People need to stop buying Rav4 it's too overrated

As per other comments, it’s pointless to review any car with such a long wait time. The only way to get one fast is to pay $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 more than the new price for a low km 2nd hand or demo vehicle. This rapidly diminishes the value equation.

This car is essentially not available for purchase in Australia. If you order today you will not receive the car reviewed here nor will you pay the suggested price. Kinda pointless review sorry as the vehicle is unavailable.

The good old RAV4, but SUV's starting to get boring, personally I would not purchase one of this, there are better alternatives out there.

Waste of time review as Toyota can't supply your options are wait up to 3 years and it will be a different vehicle with a price increase or deal with a scalper and pay 10000 k to have one now

Most overrated car ever. Mine has an endless list. Before you buy, know that its Good car if it's NOT long term but Australian dealerships won't fix or report any issues. I'VE been to 6 different dealers and all the same. The brakes randomly reduce in stopping power due to regen cutting out. Suspension feathered and distroyed my tyres by 15000km. Wipers skip across windscreen since new. The Digital Radio sounds so bad you will likely never use it. The sky on the sat nav moves the wrong direction, maps are only updated every few years. Groaning from brake pedal is considered not faulty, groaning suspension considered not faulty, lane guidance that sits on the middle line considered not faulty. Squeaky wheels, tires will screech on round abouts, android auto will disconnect every few minutes or multiple times in seconds. The boot hydrolics will randomly get stuff or stuck. The fuel economy will be far above the official because your hybrid system will glitch. The big battery will frequently get too hot and reduce its usage to prevent overheating and that will prevent you from getting good fuel efficiency like you get when brand new. Also the Toyota loan car they advertise you get with services needs to be booked around a month ahead, that's if they even have one. Good luck. This car is dangerous and should be recalled until Toyota deal with them.
