I had a few hours before the Welsh fire breaker. So I set out with Gareth Wilson's Black Mamba. Now this fly is renowned for taking big fish. The fishing has been very difficult over the past few days, so it was ideal to see how good this fly really is.

Hi David, we all get it wrong some times, but its more for the enjoyment. I have not fished since that last video due to lock down. But have been very busy and waiting on a load of fly tying materials. So I on it next week. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thinking of something a bit special for a xmas. Take care mate. Shaun.

Hi Shaun. Just found your channel after watching Gareths incredible cat video. You should give them a try. I've used ukflyfishers patterns for years now and my catch rate has increased loads. His favourite is that black mamba, but those cats certainly catch. Good video keep them coming.

Hi Peter, really nice to hear from you again. Yes Gareth's lure does move a few fish. I have used it a few times since and it has caught me fish. But I still find it does not hold as many as I would like. I stick with my smaller green fritz, holds a few more fish. The fish on this water do tend to sit a bit deeper as the water is so clear. They can see every thing that moves above them. But yes you could be right, as sometimes I see the fish and they appear to be higher in the water. But what appears to be 4' turns out to be 6'. Thanks for the comment Peter. Take care mate. Shaun.

Hi Chad, the pattern has a lot to do with it, the tail is quite long and the material needs closer inspection, which I believe have sorted now. Can't wait for next trip to try it out. @@shaunfishes101 Hi Shaun, many thanks for sending the flies, very much appreciated. I see you are wearing the Airflo jacket, I’m looking for a jacket, bib & brace set. Your jacket looks like the wading jacket? What are your recommendations on the Airflo airtex sets. I would go for the 3/4 jacket with the bib & brace, but with so many different makes it gets hard to choose, not knowing what’s good or bad. Hope you can help Shaun. Tight lines.🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙

@@bobturner8323 Hi Bob, well the reviews on the air flow stuff was good. And I went for the wading as it has more pockets. Some time ago I was in constant rain and water ended up in my boots. The bib was leaking air flow replaced them, said they had had no problems with them. But then how many fish conditions like me. To cut it short I still have problems. Rain proof maybe, storm proof defo NO. If I am expecting long spells of heavy rain I put my mountain ware house stuff over the top. Check out reviews very carefully, who is doing it. There are people out there will tell you any shit so long as they get something in return. Sorry Bob I am in the same boat as you still looking. I am not convinced that the upper market stuff is any better.

@@shaunfishes101 Thanks for that Shaun, very interesting. I have winter waterproofs, so far so good. Just looking for some light stuff to keep me dry when raining, won’t be going out in stormy weather. I can’t wear the heavy duty gear when out in the better months, I’m sure you understand what I’m trying to say, easier to explain when talking to someone, but not so easy when writing it down. Thanks for the info Shaun.

@@bobturner8323 Ye same here , much better to talk in person. sounds like the airflow gear will be ok for you, as I said rain or showers no problem. I go out for a whole day in storms, and that's where it fails. Otherwise I love it. Oh even though there are zips at bottom of legs, I still find it a struggle going over boots. So I take boots off, and yes put them back on.

Great video instruction Shaun. I'm new to fly fishing and have never used barbless flies as I've only fished catch and keep waters. I've hooked and lost fish occasionally, so I'm wondering if using barbless means you lose more? What do you think of "snake" flies with the rear hook position?
@shaunfishes101
@shaunfishes101 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, thanks for coming onto our channel with your comment. And you have picked a great pastime. Fly fishing can be challenging at times but the rewards can be so amazing. Welcome to fly fishing. Barbless hooks no problem. We don't loose that many fish on them. In fact we have not noticed any difference. I have got a video on here somewhere which shows me letting line loose several times and the fish is still on. It was a demonstration on slack line. I have my preferences to fishing. But have no problem with any method, so long as the fishery allows. One of the boys was fishing a white snake on a sink line dead slow the other day with great success. Oh and hook at rear. The rest of us was struggling. Nice to hear from you Steve. Good luck, and stay safe. Shaun.

Been using your braided leader set up for a while now Shaun. Gotta say I really like it, works well when I want a sip tip from floater, and intermediate added to my 1.5ips intermediate fly line. Also reduces my tippet waste! Am prone to some tangles and knots! 😬 But I have found the loops break on the snowbees sometimes, whether loop to loop or blood knot tippet onto leader loop. Might just be me? Oh, do you use the setup when adding droppers? I’ve tried it, adding 8-10 ft of tippet with a dropper knotted in about 4-5ft in. Cheers! Jonathan
@shaunfishes101

Exactly what is breaking. Your tippet or the actual braided loop. We fish the leader with up to three flies and 20' tippet no probs.

@@shaunfishes101 braided loop
@shaunfishes101
@shaunfishes101 8 ай бұрын
@@j..w443 This is very unusual. Never seen or heard of this before. But in saying that I have never put a knot to my braid. I have always done loop to loop. The advantages is that you can switch your tippet with ease, and no damage to braid. Is the braid actually snapping or just slipping loose. The way braid works is that under pressure it holds tighter. But if there was something stopping the braid from contracting. It will come loose. Other than that I may tend to think there could be a bad batch. But besides all this, try the loop to loop method. Its the way to go.

High Shaun , where do you get your braided leaders from mate. I have a Snowbee floater and intermediate. The intermediate is green, are your sinking and intermediate leaders clear. Cheers Shaun tight lines
@shaunfishes101
@shaunfishes101 Жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, The last time I purchased was a shop in South Devon. Every where else had sold out. No they are not clear. The clear leaders are poly leaders. Sink Braids are brown, Intermediate as you have said is Green. And floaters are normally Neutral, Like braided loops. But its the Intermediate that will be used the most. I even use this when dry fly fishing. But when I dry fly, I cast, leave for about 10 to 20 secs, then recast. When fish are on the dries they hit almost straight away. If you decide to leave the fly sit on the water for longer periods, then a good bet is the floating braid.

Where is this fishery please
@shaunfishes101
@shaunfishes101 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Moggsy, the water is Hayscastle Fishery, Pembrokeshire Wales. The water is spring water on the lake which means it is very clean all year. And the fish are top draw. The lake is about three acre with the top end full of weed where the fish feed. Some of the weed will be coming out soon which gives a bit more fishing. But there's a balance required. Take care. Shaun.
