Stilt-legged Tyrannosaur Hatchlings and Estimation in Paleontology

Baby dinosaurs, as we've come to know across the history of the field of paleontology, are known for being notoriously rare, hard to find, and are often than not, incomplete. This goes for even the most well-understood of taxa, including Tyrannosaurus rex, among the most well-known of all. Said rareness has led to much of their anatomy from this stage in life being inferred from what we know from other animals, and from such calculations, especially regarding their proportions, they can often have some very funny results, including the one in this particular which will be discussed here. I hope you enjoy.

We just need to stumble upon a single, well-preserved nest & it would revolutionize our understanding of Tyrannosaurs. Fossil hunting is as much about sheer dumb luck as it is about skill or location, so fingers crossed that we have a big break.

Absolutely! Better understanding where we could find these fossils would go a long way too. :)

@@HenrythePaleoGuy True! There are many potential dig sites that are just red taped or unaccessible due to insufficient funding for expeditions. Shame, but with the range that Tyrannosaurs inhabited I'm optimistic that we'll have a breakthrough sooner or later.

I wonder if their arm length and fingers, as chicks or as juveniles, were more useful compared to when they become adults.

Probably. While the adults had pretty powerful arms, they lacked reach to really use them.

using a single toenail to calculate the size of the animal like in UALVP 59599 could get you into wacky images, just look at puppies, they have huges paws compaired to their size, paws that are not are large compaired to their adult size. I don´t know this is the same case with birds, but if hatchling birds are all beak and paw that could be the same for theropods. Interesting topic, make me reread Witton´s post.
@HenrythePaleoGuy
@HenrythePaleoGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Birds are generally pretty gangly when they're born, although some keep roughly the same proportions. Mammals in this case would not be the best comparison given the general proportion differences, as well as them not being precocial like Tyrannosaur hatchlings would have been.

If the hatchlings had any sort of direct parental care (as opposed to indirect care like baby crocodilians hanging out near mum as juveniles), it makes sense they would have very long legs to keep up with adults, rather like baby ungulates who have to be able to run and follow the herd within hours of birth.
@bkjeong4302

Crocodilians provide direct, not indirect, post-embryonic parental care with the adults actively defending their young, and the young being able to call their mothers with alarm calls.

As for skulls, for what I've observed in Tyrannosaurs, hatchlings (Such as "Raptorex") have deeper skulls compared to older juveniles (Nanotyrannus), which have thinner skulls, but as juveniles mature into adults (Tyrannosaurus), their skulls deepen again. This pattern is also possibly seen in Yutyrannus, if (Sinocallipteryx is a juvenile).

any creature that has legs like that would not be able to run, a bird like a stork cant run and it has wings to stabilize it if it did, and ostrich has big wings so it can maneuver. if this this tried to run and turn it would topple over. its just physics
