I lived in California for decades. It **was** idyllic. I left because it's outrageously expensive, overcrowded, lacking adequate housing and infrastructure, and has traffic that's so bad you have to plan your day around it. The places you mentioned are no longer available to anyone but the wealthy. I can no longer afford to live in the house I once owned in Half Moon Bay. When I lived in Santa Barbara, the median price of a so-so house reached $1,000,000 by 2003. Sacramento is an overcrowded hellhole with terrible weather...the homeless situation, crime-rate and traffic approach that of the Bay Area. My sister and mom live there, so I have spent a considerable amount of time there. I have lived in/near (San Diego, Santa Barbara, Sac., Hermosa Beach, Marin, Tahoe) almost all of these places. If you make an income under $100,000/year, you will struggle in any of these cities/towns. Several years ago, I interviewed for a position in Santa Cruz that required a Master's and state license. The interviewers pointed out how expensive it was, even for physicians. The towns that are affordable are places so dismal, few would want to live in them. Leaving California was the best decision I've made in years! You couldn't pay me enough to move back.

I can agree with this list, but I am inclined to include both Elk Grove and Walnut Grove to it. Both are close to Sac, but the peaceful San Joaquin Valley has grown on me since 2009 when I moved there, to WG. I have no complaints whatsoever about my decision to and glad I did.

Traffic will kill ya in all of these cities, especially Palo Alto and Mountain View.

Although these may be the best places to live in California. Price wise they are not. Not a lot of people can afford living in California. If you need proof look at the recent news on the growing homeless population in California especially in Los Angeles "the City of Angels" - hells angels is more like it. LOL The crime there is insane. Look at some vids of real people living there so you can see the truth. Talk to the people live there, look up real estate housing costs. My point is educate yourself and KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!

If i knew then what i know now i never would have come here. Florida, Texas, Louisiana, the outter banks of the Carolina's all have the same things here without the problems.....
