In this guitar lesson, Steve Stine discusses some approaches for you to finally memorize all the positions of the guitar fretboard, so you can get to the next level with your guitar playing.
1. If you can see it, you can play it - you have to truly learn to "visualize" the shape/pattern you are working on. Often, guitar players try to learn too fast, and the patterns become jumbled in their minds. The goal is to avoid moving to the next pattern until you REALLY have the first one memorized completely...THEN learn the next pattern the same way...and begin to see them BOTH as one element on the fretboard.
2. Once you can "see it", begin developing the technique to actually play/execute it - use a jam track, a drum loop, or a metronome, and begin building strength, speed and stamina by practicing the shape/pattern over and over again to gain power and control.
3. Begin learning Steve's concept of "Meandering" - begin learning (and following the rules of) Meandering to develop the ability to "shape shift" your shapes/patterns so you aren't just playing them up and down by route (this is very helpful in making the transition from "practice" to "creativity").
Meandering on its own won't make your solos sound like "solos", but it's the first step in disconnecting from "route practice".
Once you learn to meander, you can then begin to learn the art of "phrasing", which you can begin to learn by breaking your Meandering into sentences, and once you get that, you can begin to target notes that match between the chords and the scale you are learning, to develop an element of melody.

Like on the A string on 5th fret wouldn’t be e yet because that’d be more on the 7-8th fret then the a on the 10th fret which that’s correct

@@s.y.7866 Do you want to expand on what your confused about? Fretboard memorization helps with improvisation and creating melodies/solos. So when you're in a certain key you have to stick to the notes in that key, and by knowing where those notes are on the fretboard you can understand where you can play.

@@s.y.7866 I'm also a beginner. What I find helpful about fret memorization and being able to see the scale as Steve notes, is it demystifies the fret board for me. Knowing where the root notes of a scale is helpful because when I'm playing along to a blues backtrack, I know where to resolve my improvisation to. Last thing, knowing how scales connect to one another allows more possibilities when "noodling" around with a back track. That's what I find helpful about memorizing notes on the fret board.

I’m 53 and learned by ear. 3 years ago I got clean and sat my guitar down so I could learn how to live my life sober. 5 months ago I lost my mother to brain cancer. I honestly thought I’d never play again. I just lost all interest. Also realizing I generally played high on stage or just practicing. About 2-3 weeks ago I decided to give it a try. I really struggled at first. I learned all my licks and songs by ear for all those years. I stumbled across your videos and I can’t begin to tell you what an inspiration you are and have been to me. I heave learned so many things from watching your videos over the last several weeks. A lot of things I knew but just didn’t understand because I’ve never taken lessons. You explain things in a way that make it so understandable. You have inspired me to want to learn theory and understand the fretboard like I never knew before. I watch one of your videos daily. You sir are the definition of a guitar teacher/instructor. You have a very calming way of explaining things with no judgment. From the bottom of my heart I want to just say thank you for your encouragement, inspiration, knowledge and videos. My mom always supported me and attended several shows. Losing her was and is the greatest loss I have ever felt. But slowly and surely because of you I am finding my way back to one of the things l love the most......guitar. Thank you Steve! It took me way too many years for me to learn what you are teaching in this video. I spent way to long on position 1 and thinking it was impossible to see all five positions. But after practicing connecting the positions together, it came together rather quickly. I knew the five different positions and could play them separately but until I started connecting them, it didn’t click.

This is perfect. Well explained and exactly where I'm at. I'm like Ray Last's comment, 53 years on guitar except I never learned the theory. I started about a month ago, bought an electric (been acoustic last 40-45 years after making the decision and selling my electric) and I'm finally learning my scales and theory. Never too late and I'm amazed at how little it would have taken me back then to focus, even without KZfaq. I was one of those "sit by the turntable and do the lift and drop thing" kinda guy figuring chords and memorizing licks. So much easier when you're younger all you aspiring guitarists. Don't wait! Get 'er done! You won't regret it.

I can honestly say....this was one of the best lessons on learning the fretboard that I watched. Steve, For a mental midget like myself who has been playing for 44 years, you are a godsend. I am a really good guitar player and I have recorded and made records with several bands. My problem has always been improving my lead playing and being able to jam with other people . Because of you, I now have the confidence.[Only problem is I am an old fuck and don't go outside anymore, But if they call, I will be ready] Buddy, where were you in 1976??? I could have been a GOD !! LOL !!

Steve, this video is THE one to show everyone trying to learn lead guitar. I had all the shapes (Minor Pentatonic) memorised and couldn't connect them until this advice. See the position, then meander with 2 of them at a time. I'm up to four of the five shapes in just over an hour. Thanks man, you rock!

As a visual learner, relating the movement through the scale positions by “seeing” the shapes of the positions on the neck makes total sense to me. I’m a drummer and have only ever dabbled at trying to learn a few power chords on the guitar, but this video makes me feel like I’ve gained a new understanding of how I should “see” the guitar and makes me want to try to master new territory! Thanks man!

I mean maybe it's me, maybe I am a little slow or something but whenever I tried to understand the pentatonic in any other way or from any one else I never really got it. Great advice that can be applied to any instrument and really any skill level of musician! I'm a beginner at guitar but I'm a Trombonist at an advanced level and I utilize a very similar technique when trying to get the chord progressions down to improvise over a song. Once I can play the scales or arpeggios along with the chords in a tune I'll use a "meandering" technique to really get to know the chord transitions and how they relate. This of course is a little more advanced (not by much) but totally incorporates the same meandering philosophy and is such a great way to get fluid with the scales and train your ear on where to go. If you can hear it, you can play it! Really hit the nail on the head man, great job!!! Helped reassure myself as well so thank you

Excellent video Steve. I used your meandering technique and it works "GREAT". When I did the meandering I would very often hit the wrong notes on another position, but then I would remember the mistake. I took it slow and after a month I can now play all the five positions and slide into them. After learning the patterns visually is when I could then jump around, but as you said you have to take it slow. It's amazing how all the other shapes stick in your head, just like the first or common position. Steve's meandering technique works and I really recommend other folks try this. Thanks for the help Steve.👍

Excellent lesson and video. I made the mistake early on by not absorbing the ability to visualize. I did develop my ear to a great degree but for too long, I didn't realize that guitar is as much mental as it is physical. Chops were so important in my early days, I totally lost sight of learning the fretboard. Many people make the mistake of playing without not really thinking about what they're playing. Steve, thanks!

THANK YOU for answering the question I've been asking lead guitarists and search engines for the last 1 1/2 years! Most people give me a puzzled look when I ask how they see the fretboard/or how to visualize the different positions of scales. I've learned all of the positions of the major scale and minor pentatonic scale, but still struggle to come up with really interesting solos. Now I know it's because I can only see one position at a time. Now for the easy part: practice!

I enjoy watching steves videos. He can relate to any of us whether we’re beginner to intermediate to advanced. Can’t say that for many of those with big egos. I hadn't realized learning the fretboard of a key is how one learn to solo well, but now I see it as absolutely essential. Great video, great tips, examples, and the advice on "meandering" as a way to practice the connection between scales is something I will incorporate into my practices. Thanks for posting, sounds like would be a good teacher.

Whow I know all my scales...all my modes as also a trumpet player reader but I learnt such a lot watching this. I know lots but can't apply it on the fretboard so I might as well know nothing.....Start on D and play the Em I should know that but needed reminding great teacher so patient and full of knowledge thank you JOY

Your stuff always speaks to me. I learned pentatonic in all 5 positions. Then added the extra 2 notes to make those 5 positions diatonic and spend my time trying to create good progressions in different modes and meander over them. When I do that for a period of time I end up finding some kind of Melody that I like and it becomes part of the song. Still working on being able to see it as one large picture but it's getting better each time I sit down. It was you who pulled back the curtain around a year ago so thanks!

Hey Steve! I actually am struggling to do improvisations and also I am not able to do my own solos. Your videos help me a lot! and it is as if you can read my mind! Everytime you speak, the points of what you’re saying really strucks me very hard. For such a long time, i’ve been so very envious of what other guitarrists can do and so with your help! I would be anle to do the same in no time! I really love your videos and you deserve the world! i really wish I can meet you but Im too far away. Thank you steve! You are the BEST - the information you teach is targeted and direct for anyone to learn how to play a guitar - such as when you say to not be overly or only concerned with speed / how fast you play something AND to practice a section of information until you have absolute understanding of that knowledge as one wants to be able to become virtually automatic in movement around the fretboard. I have been playing guitar for decades BUT still have not mastered the fretboard. I GREATLY ENJOY playing and I know I am at a point in my journey to get better where with just a bit more practice with YOUR INSTRUCTION my playing abilities will increase immensely. Though it is nice to have your instruction VIA internet - I would love to have person to person instruction if I lived in same area where you live. Do instructors still teach that way ?
