This song had a profound effect on me when I first quit drinking in very nearly 30 years ago in 1994. I could relate to it in so many ways. Rather than getting me down, it made me feel empowered, it felt like someone was singing it to me encouragingly. I am still sober and clean.

I drank like a fish… lightning… vodka… rye… tequila… now, at 76, only Louie XIII Why this story… I’m proof there is an alcoholic gene, as I was never an alcoholic! I do know a lot of them, however, many AA folks… some of which go off after 19-20 years and it’s really rough… one killed themselves, so don’t even think about it! The AA success story’s are actually little miracles and a very low percentage! I knew a guy… a blind drunk… and the last thing he remembered was a woman he hit coming through his windshield! Another guy wrecked his car a couple blocks from his house and the cops found him sobbing uncontrollably in the attic of his house! You guys are living miracles!

If the night turned cold And the stars looked down And you hug yourself On the cold, cold ground You wake the morning In a stranger's coat No one would you see Ask yourself, 'Who'd watch for me? 'My only friend, who could it be?' It's hard to say it I hate to say it But it's probably me When your belly's empty And the hunger's so real And you're too proud to beg And too dumb to steal You search the city For your only friend No-one would you see You ask yourself, 'Who could it be? 'A solitary voice to speak out and set me free' I hate to say it I hate to say it But it's probably me You're not the easiest person that I ever got to know And it's hard for us both to let our feelings show Some would say I should let you go your way You'll only make me cry But if there's one guy, just one guy Who'd lay down his life for you and die It's hard to say it I hate to say it But it's probably me When the world's gone crazy, and it makes no sense And there's only one voice that comes to your defence And the jury's out And your eyes search the room One friendly face is all you need to see And if there's one guy, just one guy Who'd lay down his life for you and die It's hard to say it I hate to say it But it's probably me I hate to say it I hate to say But it's probably me I hate to say it I hate to say But it's probably me I hate to say it I hate to say But it's probably me

I think Sting is very good at writing about real human feelings and he captures the story with the proper mood through the music. Really gifted musician, artist. This song is about, I think, the lonely battles that many face through life. It's a tough world sometimes, and the song is thus relatable.

I went to a very small exclusive concert to see Sting in the early 90's. I think there were only about 50 to 100 people in the audience and we were sat so close to Sting as he was singing in the middle of the circle with his top off, his black & yellow striped jeans on and his sex appeal in full attendance. What a guy, what a talent, what a performer. I am so glad that I got to see him live and in such an intimate concert.

@jpwjr11992 жыл бұрын
@@JonSebastianF Right on - Kenny Kirkland was my favorite musician of any that played with Sting. But to your point, it's not uncommon at all, whether playing a melodic line or playing chord voicings to sub out the natural 3rd for the flat 3rd in a dominant function chord (e.g. blues scale, altered diminished scales e.g. altered C diminished scale over B7 chord has both the flat and major 3rd. In this song, you'd have to add a C# in the C dim scale because the C# is so pivotal to this song), and being that the tonic chord itself is basically a B7#5/E or EmM7 that oscillates to a Bm7/E, that ambiguity really fits the song even during that section.

I had to laugh. (hey, that would make a great song title) I've been a Sting fan since he performed ever in life, thanks for all the great music via "The Police" and "Sting" solo artist. Back in the 80s I had a girlfriend and she knew how much I enjoyed Sting and his music. So, she used to accuse me of 'being gay'.🤣I told her, no, I'm not gay, not that there's anything wrong with that. My goal someday was to see Sting 'live' in concert and after listening to this KZfaq video (again), I found out he'll be in Tampa, FL in February 2024. I thought, awesome, and since I've always been a live concert guy, sitting near the front center for the acoustics is my thing, I looked on Ticketmaster for a ticket. Logical right? The seat I wanted was $4,500. I had to refresh my browser because I thought "This price cannot be." Oh, it be, baby. I am not saying he's not worth it. Maybe next time Sting, have fun and enjoy the weather! Sting was born in 1951, and I was born in 1950, that's about as close as we'll ever get. 🤣
