From my understanding, the heat source heats up the internal part of the engine. This causes the air inside the engine to expand and push the piston outward. After this, it cools down and returns back to the original position, completing one full stroke. The heated section is provided by a heat source of concentrated sunlight or coal or fire. The cooled section is water cooled or cooled down with a heatsink which draws heat away from the engine, allowing to cool and contract faster.

If you tried sucking all the air from a bottle, you get a vacuum. If there's air in it, it would expand, and if cooled, it contracts.
