About a3 a6 h3 h6 sequence: White doesn't want to develop his bishop on e2 or d3 and wants to directly develop it on c4 with no tempo loss. Black, in the contrary, wants to wait till White plays Be2 or Bd3 and THEN taking on c4 and b5 with tempo. It's tempo strategy. About Bd7: maybe Black wanted to either hinder the e3-e4 push or plant a knight on e4 himself.

Am i the only one who assumes "checkmate in 2 moves" means either the second move of the game or that color's second move = checkmate? By this logic, you can call any (in fact every) game checkmate in 1. Or 2, or pick a number.

I assumed that originally too, but by M2 it means no possibility of immediate mate, to guaranteed mate in only 2 moves.

You don't call a game "checkmate in 2". You call the position that.

Even as a 1600 I will absolutely make a dumb pawn move to match an opponents dumb pawn move. I usually only try to do it on complicated positions that I want their clock burning while I think.

I doubt I would have seen that mate in a game at the time I played. But I have now learned about the Quiescence Error not checking all checks. So I might have found it in Tactic trainer if I spent all day looking at it in chess tempo.

I use the tactics sometimes. One can sacrifice half the army and it's bad for the opponents to think they have won.
