Hi Folks!
This is a 20 minute video of some STOL pilot training with my new friend Brad Lund and his new #CubCrafters FX3.
Brad wanted to some #STOL #pilottraining and some off-airport training. We have been trying to connect for sometime now and everything lined up for us to get together and work on the basics. As you hear me say often, yes I'm a broken record about it, but Power and energy management is key to become a safe backcountry pilot. For that matter, a safer pilot period. Slow flight is key to becoming a good pilot in all regards in my own opinion.
Here you will see us go through all sorts of various scenarios starting with the very basics of just seeing how he does with a spot landing, his roll out length after touchdown, his directional control etc. Having never flown with Brad previously, we go to some very simple spots to assess where we are and work from there. You will see Brad goes from a very fast approach and long (500' plus roll outs) to slow and stable with 250' or less rollouts in high density altitudes. His progression over a 5-6 hour training session is just incredible and I am certain you will agree.
Sit back and do your own assessment on this training, his technique from start to finish and let us know what you think. Obviously there is so much more that goes into all of this behind the scene but I try to capture the basic info here for you.
Brad is a pilot that spends a lot of time in his jet. The smaller Carbon Cub is new to him and he is getting better with each landing in this video.
I hope you enjoy it. Please leave us a comment, hit the button for notifications and if your like or did not like this video hit the buttons! Subscribing to my channel helps me out as well.
Thanks again for your time and hope you enjoy it!

I felt I got the best training from the best backcountry/STOL pilot in America! So fun to spend so much time with you. Epic! Let’s do it again soon! 👍🏻

Great video, Kevin. Brad is very fortunate to have this kind of training. Stick back….stick back all the way….just like my dad used to teach me. He also taught me power off spot landings. Only allowed to clear the throttle once. Of course, not for places like these strips, but excellent energy management practice. So, if you’re looking for future video ideas here’s one I’d enjoy seeing.

Bro, sweet vid! I've had people tell me that they learned more in the 3-4 hours that you worked with them at MayDaySTOLDrag than they have in months with others. You know your backcountry flying, you respect the machines, and you have "no grey areas" when it comes to safety. Keep it up brother and see you soon!

But grest skills everybody! …luv it watching everyones little bit differnt flying styles though u can learn alot everytime even pros!!;-)!never cockyjust sure of what you know you can do… glad everybody safe!! Carbon Cub fx3 are def imppressive! And ya’ll cover your six…;)

Just got a Legend Super Cub last October, and I’m nearing about 100 hours. I’ve got the short takeoffs, and I’m starting to get better at spot landing and shortening the rollout, but I’m still afraid to brake too hard and nose it over. How do you get used to hard braking without going over?

Hey Kevin, some time ago, I came across you us-bushflyers on youtube. Especially the flying cowboys. I love what you do and I`m sure, if I were in the USA, I would be one of you. Unfortunately, what you do is not possible here in Switzerland, so I do it with model airplanes. I also enjoy playing with the plane, take off and land perfectly, often at the limit. Or with just one wheel across the field, preferably just on the tail wheel. I love training my friends and push them to keep getting better and more confident, just like you do! I was enthusiastic about the SuperSTOL, probably also because there is no modelairplanekit or ARF of it to buy. So I built a 1/3.5 scale model myself, based on documents and KZfaq research. In the future I will try to make some videos about our "Bushflights". I'm still working on a reasonable video quality, but I've linked a few here for you. I would be happy about a comment. Have fun, take care und fly safe. Greetings from Switzerland.
