Does anyone have some info on how it would work to put a Z24 head on a KA24E short block? I know there is less dish on the KA24E pistons, but its a little hard to find specs on the nissan engine components. Like no one lists a compressed head gasket thickness as far as I can find.

It's been 20 years since I paid a repair shop and machine shop to rebuild my Z24. When it was all done, they called me and said it's done, it's running, but it isn't running good. I brought it home and advanced the timing, then it ran right. I had to advance the timing all the way to the end of the allowable distance on the tab. (I even opened it up a little farther with a screwdriver). 20 years I have been thinking about this, did the machine shop mess up the timing? I had a suggestion someone said maybe the oil pump is off a few degrees. But near the end of the video I see you rotating the base of the distributor. Could that be all I need to do? Engine runs fine, but I've always worried about being at the limits of contact points between the cap and rotor. Oh, and it has an aftermarket cam I've always wondered if the cam timing is the culprit.

Aftermarket will cause it to run a little rough on idle but you need to check timing with a timing light to see what it’s running at. These motor’s are happy with 3-5 degrees advanced, no more.

@@STONEBROKEGARAGE thanks for responding, but doesn't answer the question. 3-5 degrees advance is not the experience I'm alluding to. It does run a little rough at idle, but the advance is way past 3-5 degrees. If I put the distributor "somewhere in the middle" the engine won't run properly because it doesn't have enough advance. Cam has a lot of midrange hp (3,000 to 6,000 rpm) but less than stock torque. The distributor is turned all the way to the detent, and it runs properly. It doesn't ping, which makes me think it's just the distributor/oil pump is off just a notch or two. Been this way for 20 years.
