It’s a sad state of affairs when I see the title and think, “is this a pureflix movie comparing mobsters to Mormons?” I don’t know why that would be a thing, But it says a lot about the religious films that get the snob treatment.
@disparityband
@disparityband 6 жыл бұрын
I completely thought the same thing except in my head it was going to be about mobsters and Mormons secretly working together to perpetrate some kind of crime or like Mormons being complicit with the mob in some kind of fraud or ponzi scheme situation. Which i guess is still comparing them, so nevermind. I guess I just meant to say me too.

Not exactly; the Church had recently made requests as to how the Church itself is referred to, not necessarily the membership. Saying that these people are "Mormons" is (if I remember correctly) A-OK.

Half of it has to do with the fact that it's mixed with the working class New York, New Jersey area the dialect and mannerisms. because the most famous Mobsters (who happened to be Italian) operated/operating out of the New York area.

I'm not from Utah (or from America, for that matter) and what surprised me is that Mormons are still the outright majority of the population of Utah. I thought they would be a small religious minority of 5 or 10% at most, but no, they're something like 60% of the population.

And what's most shocking about it is that it also made me legitimately _laugh_ at times. For example, I actually chuckled when Beans sprinted over at one of his neighbors trying to help him unpack his moving truck and just violently punched him in the face. I mean, it makes sense in context, but I still found it kinda funny.

Yeah, I heard Mormon cinema is famous for being way more chill than it's Protestant or Catholic counterparts and for being far more open to making fun of or even criticizing their own religion. Oh and a lot more creative, too. I remember Diamanda Hagan reviewing one called "Pirates of the Great Salt Lake" that I really need to watch someday as it looks fascinating, being a comedy, yet also something of an allegory for the struggles of gay people in the Mormon community. While also being about pirates.

@ CSharp The Little World of Don Camillo is Catholic, which means one of the best movies of all time is Catholic, it's also not really judgemental about the opposition. That being said the English translation is a bit inferior when compared to the original or some of the other translations.

A movie also though not only about that, that's still worth watching since it's one of the best movies of all time is "Little World of Don Camillo". Though if you are interested and happen to speak any major Westeuropean language besides english, you should go with that version since they all are superior to the English translation (preferably Italien of course, but I guess nobody really speaks that outside of Italy, I know that the French and German version are also good but more or less suffer the same problem, I'd suggest the Spanish translation but don't actually know it's quality).

Im from utah and grew up catholic. Im suprised how much of this was pretty accurate x"D except one thing is that Mormons tend to be all nice and welcoming if YOU are also mormon and if you live in a white neighborhood. I live in the more hispanic/tongan/samoan area. The catholic church part is half true x"D if you go to the white church (or more PC the english chruch) than yea its never filled. Like most is 30-40 people. Sometimes less. If you go the the spanish church than its always filled. My church has mass saturday and sunday. Sunday church sometimes becomes so filled the doors are open because theres not enough room. But yea a lot of this was on the nose. It didnt show the dark side of the mormon church but i can only say what ive heard from my mormon friends. But again this treatment is usually twoards othet members. To the rest of us its just whatever. You meet nice people and you meet assholes.

Guess what this movie has in common with "Zootopia?" They're both movies about not listening to stereotypes & accepting people as they are that somehow, without ANY irony at all, includes the most offensive Italian mobster stereotypes. I'm gonna go watch My Cousin Vinny on repeat now. At least it won't scream about "an offer I can't refuse" while using one hand to turn on an opera record and using the other to shovel spaghetti-pizza into it's mouth. Jesus.

Wait a minute. The main character starts off in the process of going to kill and dispose of a guy, then constantly tells everyone in the community he moves to that he basically kills people and chops up their bodies, quite openly, and they still all love him and accept him... What, is the sequel going to have Satanists move in and eat a baby at a BBQ and the Mormons just hand them napkins?

To be fair, pineapple and ham on pizza is a niche enough topping thing that if you're going to get it and you have someone over whose tastes you don't know, it really would be polite of you to get the toppings on only one half, and leave the other half plain.

Asa Utah native, I'd like to point out there are more Catholics in my hood than Mormons and Salt Lake has one of the best gay night lifes in the US. Our Pride is HUGE too.

This movie is kind of charming. I can't help laughing at the stupid jokes. Maybe because they're in such good nature.

I've watched this review a few times, and i have to say i love it. When i saw that you were reviewing a Mormon movie i figured you would be as brutal with it as any other film, and rightfully so. However despite some teasing I was happy to hear that you saw it as something far nicer than those other religious films. I know that religious groups lately haven't been representing themselves very well, so i was glad to see a movie made about members of my own faith to be a good representation of Christian Values. And if you feel like reviewing any other the other Hailstorm films in the future, that would be awesome :)

I live in Utah, and Scott Christopher came into the restaurant I work at. Booooy does he think he's the shit. He refused to even speak to me (I was literally just trying to take his order) and wouldn't look at me. His wife kept scoffing at me and trying to block my view of him cause you know, I totally am gonna make a scene about it, right? We also offer small free ice creams to all people who come in, and when I offered them some they acted like I was giving them special treatment. Their son looked sooo embarrassed, and thanked me for the ice cream very politely. I literally wasn't going to say anything to him, even though I recognized him (my family is Mormon and they watch these movies, so I've seen him), because I honestly don't care that much about him. But he thinks he's going to be mobbed by rabid fans everywhere he goes, apparently. His wife does all the talking for him while he hides behind her like a shy toddler. Great guy.

That's like thinking you're famous because you're in local TV ads. They do realise almost no one watches these movies, don't they?

This movie looks way better than it has any right to. I like the fact that these people care more for each other instead of running around trying to convert the non-member or screaming persecution every five seconds.
