True story: Matt LeBlanc auditioned for ”The Passion of The Christ” because Mel told the producers ”I want the short haired kid from ’Ed’”. Matt was ultimately shut down for not looking ”Catholic” enough, as opposed to Jim Caviezel.

Stefan B. Not Catholic enough?? Makes me wonder if Mel also turned down actors for looking too Jewish...
@ZombieDragQueen
@ZombieDragQueen 6 жыл бұрын
Nekhet: Of course, but since Jews come in all shapes, sizes and colours, those he turned down turned out to be gentiles: one Egyptian, two Italians, a Spaniard and a Scandinavian troll who wandered by mistake on the set on his way to the International Mythical Creatures Symposium. That's how Maia Morgenstern got the part, she doesn't look "Jewish" and it threw off Mel's Jew radar - Jewdar if you will.
@Khenfu_Cake
@Khenfu_Cake 6 жыл бұрын
Stefan B. Oh the horror! Poor Mel better get his "Jewdar" fixed then. I mean we can't have a Jewish person (especially someone with a Middle Eastern/Mediterranean "look") play a Jewish person living in what is now current day Isreal two millennia ago. That's just preposterous. Jesus did after all look exactly like how he's depicted in those Renaissance paintings where the Roman soldiers were depicted as turban wearing Ottomans. Historical accuracy is very important in a Mel Gibson film.
@ZombieDragQueen
@ZombieDragQueen 6 жыл бұрын
Nekhet Now, now, let's not be mean. Romans soldiers were actually made up of different ethnicities from the conquered territories (a way to get Roman citizenship was to enlist in the army - fun fact: there were, I think, three African Roman emperors and one Persian). So those brutish undisciplined Romans depicted in the film were likely from the Russian conquered territories. You know how the Slavs are, drunk and disorderly. Pontius turns to the camera, breaking the fourth wall and shrugging "Meh, those Russians, what you gonna do?" Que audience laughter track and the bass line from Seinfeld. But it was touch and go a while with Caviezel since he wasn't blond enough. But when Mel interviewed him, he was asked: "Ok so, REALLY, how hardcore Catholic are you?" and Caviezel is like "Well, you know intimate scenes in movies? I get a stunt double or my wife to be the stunt double since I won't touch any other woman". And Mel was like "Fockin hell, that's hardcore. Even I am not that hardcore. Alright, you get the part. It was either you or the albino from the DaVinci Code, and between you and me, he's a bit TOO hardcore for mainstream appeal. But, we'll give you the Robert Powell treatment for more authenticity. You know, he played Jesus in Zeffirelli's masterpiece and he had contacts and bright eyeshadow makeup to highlight it and he never blinked on screen. So we'll give you deep blue contacts and the makeup department will get you to look as Catholic as possible." And that, kids and future historians, is how it really went down.

Since there's a mention of Lost in Space: I recall spending the whole Nostalgia Critic review of this movie wondering where I had seen this guy before and when I realized it was Matt Leblanc, I went "of course, he's one of the guys from Friends". That's all I remember otherwise, tells you how great and memorable that movie was... And I knew Matt Leblanc without watching much of Friends, though I somehow know all the 6 leads names and the actors playing them. On a sidenote, imagine they had somehow integrated this movie in the continuity of Joey (the spinoff show) as one of the movies he made. Confusing or brilliant ?

I vaguely remember seeing this movie on PBS or somewhere, when I was 5 years old. Until now, I wasn't sure if it was real, or a dream.

Not only Dire Straits and the Coasters. That music during the car scene is "Everything Louder Than Everything Else" by Meatloaf, and I can't tell for sure but the end credits sounds like the Ramones. It's not just the crew, the music is also a billion times better than a chimp movie starring a sitcom actor could ever deserve.

You know what this movie reminds me of? Not just Going Bananas or Friends or Dunston Checks In or Ace Ventura or MVP: CARNIVAL MAGIC

Ed may be creepy, but at least he's done with skilled practical effects and not dreadful 90s CGI.

This was mid 90's. No way in hell the production, obviously rather low budget, could have afforded CG, and the practical effects look okay, I've seen worse but I've seen better, both practical and CG. Though, let's just thank god it looks better than Going Bananas, I don't think I can handle more nightmarish chimps.
