What's interesting is that Raymond Burr's involvement in this film is what allowed him to score his iconic role of Perry Mason. Also, the filmmakers of Godzilla 1985 wanted to turn the film into a comedy, but Burr told them they either take the film seriously or he would not be a part of it at all. He understood that Godzilla needed to be treated with respect and that is most commendable of him.

I remember getting the Critereon version of this movie that included the original Japanese film and the American film. It's quite interesting to watch the two versions back to back. The most striking thing about the American version is that it completely removes all direct references to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Well 1955, roughly when the American version was released, was well before the atrocities of the Japanese such as unit 731 became known to the public so people had more reason to feel guilty over the bombings

It is. Akira Ifukube's score for Gojira is just beautiful. At a glance, Gojira may be a guy in a rubber suit destroying miniatures but at it's heart is a commentary about the dangers of nuclear warfare.

@@Whovian45810 What I found impressive is that they found a real Japanese dance ritual, but then dubbed it with an original song to make the scene more creepy. Godzilla's own cry and footsteps are made using instruments. It's just great.

"I bet he never comes back." It's funny because those bones are later used for the construction of Kiryu, which does harbor the memories of the original Godzilla the bones belonged to. So yeah, this specific Godzilla does indeed come back!

@@nieznajomy4398 In the 98 Godzilla cartoon, their version of Mecha-Godzilla is Cyber Zilla, the Zilla from the 98 movie resurrected with cyborg enhancements by invading aliens. Kiryu in Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla is built around the body of the Godzilla from the original 54 film. They both use the idea of the original monster being resurrected to be the cyborg equivalent of itself and fighting its successor, but the cartoon came several years before.

Brendon Tenold heard about this idea and immediately moved, leaving no forwarding address, changed his phone number, and no longer answers any of his email addresses. His new house has no windows and he bought a bevy of anti-ninja trained bull mastifs that he lets roam around freely inside his concrete fenced yard under the many sodium-vapor streetlights he had installed around the perimeter. I also understand the barbed wire topping the concrete fence emits a crackling hissing sound in the rain.

I usually prefer subtitles but I really like how they ported the movie. The added character allows translation in a way that fits the story without changing the overall plot. And the effort put into making the edits look seamless is impressive. Also the Japanese guy on the radio tower yelling "sayonara minasan! x2 (goodbye everyone)" is tragic but for some reason sound funny to me and kinda make me laugh.

I remember first watching the original Godzilla on the weekend the 1998 film came out. It was during a TNT's MonsterVision double feature with Mothra vs. Godzilla, and it help me get into the REAL Godzilla. Later in Godzilla 1985, they just called Raymond Burr's character Martin, because STEVE Martin became popular at the time. 11:39- God, I had so much Taco Bell during the summer of 1998, because of the Zilla film. 13:14- (In smooth voice) Laura, you sexy minx.

Whether watching the original version or the americanized version, I still enjoy guessing which shots used the full-body suit and which ones used the hand-puppet. The hand-puppet was derived from an early design for his head, while the suit has a more refined design.

"He could shrug off the bomb scene from The Day After." That made me laugh. I find it funny when there's two people with the same name in movies/tv or a character with the same name as a real life person and they are nothing alike. This is a classic example, but probably my favorite is Kevin Smith. Not only the name of the person who gave us Silent Bob but also the name of the actor who played Ares god of War in Hercules/Xena. I'm still waiting for a mash up of Ares talking to Xena about paying him royalties or how the sign on the back of the car said Critters of Hollywood.

"All the english dubbed versions are shit" Hyperbole much? The dubs are Mothra vs Godzilla Invasion of Astro Monster etc etc hell most dubs don't change the story at all.

It's actually still a good movie. Honestly anyone that thinks the message is lost is kinda being ridiculous. Godzilla being a metaphor for nuclear destruction is still obvious here. The other complaint about "pro-America propaganda forced into the movie" is also a bit unfounded. Firstly, Gojira was never an anti-American movie in the first place, it was anti-Nuclear. Secondly, the movie still has the H-Bomb testing lead to Godzilla's awakening. Not exactly making America look great. They cut out the Hiroshima reference, but again the Hiroshima metaphor is so baked into the movie that removing the name drop doesn't really change anything. Gojira is a better movie than KotM!, but I still commend the clever editing and interesting ideas. It's IMO the best of the English versions of the Toho Films (Minus the Shin Godzilla translation which is actually pretty faithful). Better than English KKvGZ, better than many of the other Showa translations (Especially Gigantis: The Fire Monster. Yeah, remember that), and WAY better than Godzilla 1985.

When "he died of shock and strange burns" was said, I originally thought the announcer said "strange BIRDS", and I was picturing prehistoric terror birds and thinking "wow the mythos of godzilla has really expanded to include a new roster of giant things to fight with, and birds are definitely something new" I was a little bit disappointed when I figured out that he'd actually said "burns" Aw, phooey That's no fun

While they didn't get rid of the themes of Gojira, they certainly toned them down. Also, the people dealing with after-effects in the original was deliberately based on the actual victims of the US nuking Japan, something they really toned down for the American release.

I always forget that his full name was Raymond Pierre Kirby Burr Sr. I joke but that's the best "sayonarq" pronunciation I've ever heard from a white actor in the 20th century.
