Lawn aeration is great when it comes to decompacting soil. The problem with lawn aeration is the machine is very invasive in the soil and makes a massive mess.
The better solution is to use a lawn scarifier. Scarifiers dig into and take out 1/4th inch of the thatch layer. much like a tiller without the wings a lawn scarifier digs out the actual thatch layer without leaving you with a ton of useless plugs all over the place. The thatch layer is the upper root mass of the grass that is slightly above and slightly below the soil surface. When the thatch layer gets to thick it doesn't allow water and minerals to pass through properly. which is why thinning the thatch layer out is an important part of the lawn care process.
Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. Try the Ginja 5 Steps to diagnosing a lawn you'll be glad you did. Don't forget to checkout my playlist.

I dethatched my backyard twice with the greenworks dethatcher for an upcoming overseed with Lawnlife's TTTF/KBG (hopefully today/tomorrow) but now I may just go ahead and use the tractor tow-behind for a scarify as well to get a full and proper prep. I am not aerating my lawn ever again. I used to aerate every two years and it seems like it propagated unwanted grasses. I killed off the unwanted grasses and used a Greenworks dethatcher and reseeded with Rhizotomous TTTF. Finally took your advice and went to get my own dethacher but sunjoe and others were sold out. I decided to buy a cheapo from amazon. Like so many amazon thinfs these days, it appears they're all coming out of the same factory now so i figured brand doesn't much matter. Just finished last night and ready for seeding. I only used the scarifier cuz my soil is uneven and awful, removing rocks and such that came with my last topsoil load. Once i fix that and it's as smooth as your front lawn I'll use the dethatcher attachment. Between this, tenacity, and barenburg seeds I'd better have a good lawn this year.

When aerating, spread compost over the lawn to fill holes and some lays on top. Overseed using Tenacity to prevent foreign growth. Both aerating and loosening the soil at the same time. Allowing existing grass roots to spread and grow, compost eating up the clay, and filling with seed.

Hey Ginja, Love the Channel and the info you provide! I have a couple of questions. First, does the scarifying process that you showed replace the aerating? I dethatch and aerate with over seed ever fall (my lawn is 7 years old, new build, had been rough getting it going in the beginning) and would like to get it down to just using one machine if possible! Second, I have the Sunjoe dethatcher with the scarifier attachment, do you think the Ryobi battery powered is as good (I saw that you were using both)? I love the sunjoe but I get beat up with the cord! Would love to switch to an all battery powered machine. Thanks Bro! Again, Love the Channel!!!

hey!!!! so about this...... ideally you want to use a verticutter to cut the runners. the scarifiers commonly get runners bound up in the machine and causes a massive issue. here's my recommendation for those with bermuda. scalp the lawn down as low as you can. then do a dethatch just above the runners. then if you'd like to run the scarifier and thin out the runners do it at 5mm setting, one above the lowest settings. great way to do it and you'll have great success. Slay that lawn!

scalp and a dethatch that sits above the runners. Here's the deal. for bemuda using a verticutter is the way to go. it cuts the excess runners. the reason why the scarifier isn't good on bermuda is because the flails are not commonly sharp enough to cut the runners and it binds in the machine. causing a mass amount of frustration. but a good scalp and light dethatch is awesome especially in the spring time.

Their isnt a downside to core aeration, each time i do it the cores i pull get a little deeper so it is working. I have a power rake and the main reason you wanna run that us to strip out the dead growth to allow it to breathe and it helps you shorten the HOC. If you want good advice on lawncare take a look at what they do on golf courses (they topdress with sand, works better than peat)

its interesting for sure. in europe they call our dethatcher a scarifier. ryobi recently made the change to calling the scarifier an aerator.

@@pestandlawnginjaI'm in europe (Norway) and just got a lawn aerator, which is actually a combined vertical cutter and power rake. 🤷‍♂️

Choose what you like… but after scarifying your lawn roll out a 1/4” layer of organic compost. Your lawn, soil, micro-organisms in the soil and our waterways will thank you.

Ripping out good grass doing more harm, stop lawn abuse. What aerating does allows water to go deeper into the lawn, grass roots will follow. The best thing to do is lightly rake the lawn that the grass is standing not matted, Water deeply once a week, do not cut below 2.5 inches. Aerating in the fall is better than spring.

Aerate every few years (in the Fall) and you will not have thatch. Fertilize in December (or just prior to ground freezing) and you will have the first greenest lawn in the Spring guaranteed. 25 years lawncare and landscaping ... retired.

This really depends on your soil make up. I have heavy clay soil here in the south and need to aerate to get compost and water down to the root zone. Dethatching is good for some but not for all.
