Before you erase your iPhone after buying and transferring to a new device, be sure to check that you've migrated all of your authenticator codes from whichever app you use (Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator, or Yubico Authenticator).

An additional piece of advice: any time you're setting up 2FA (two-factor authentication), ALWAYS set up a backup method of 2FA so you don't get caught in the event that you do erase or lose your phone. Learn more here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nOCFidWrlc_cnmw.html

Once my transfer is completed.can i just factory reset my old phone or do i have to log out from my crypto wallet accounts.if i dont log out from my crypto wallet accounts and reset factory my old phone will i loose my crypto(even if my transfer is already completed?)

100%. I was paranoid enough to double check before wiping my phone, and yup, authenticator app did not transfer over correctly! Thank goodness I did not wipe my data yet.

This is the reason I cannot recommend authenticator apps to anyone who isn't above average tech literate. SMS may be far less secure, but you don't lose access to all of your accounts if you lose your phone. I religiously upload an updated encrypted recovery file to the cloud whenever I add a 2FA to Aegis. I don't expect most people to be able to stick to such a routine.

I have already lost google authenticator an microsoft authenticator. Lucky me, I didn't erase the old phone. I could transfer the keys to the new one. I'm wondering why Apple does not add a step to the setup wizard when you configure the new phone. It is easy to detect that some authenticator apps are installed...

thats why Authy from Trello is such an amazin 2FA app... yes its closed source and we have no idea about privacy, but is super secure, just enable extra pin code and its ALWAYS sync on the cloud on all your devices. I've been using it for years and never had a problem if you're worried about privacy remember this video is showing an app from Google.

I read reviews for Authy and several people are claiming that the account info never gets deleted. They’re saying they can log in with the supposedly deleted account even after 30 days which is the date you can’t retrieve your account… I’m seeing these kind of things recently and it’s terrifying.

You LEFT OUT a CRUCIAL detail -- that transfer to the new phone doesn't matter if you still need to restore your backup. So the people who have to hand over their phone at the store when upgrading/trading in to the new phone will have to restore from cloud first before transferring the codes. Otherwise they'll get wiped out.

thankfully MS authenticator makes it easy to transfer the 2FA codes on a new device, AS LONG as you set up cloud backup on your old device. if you didn't, you're probably screwed

@@AllThingsSecured Absolutely. I am presently trying to get something like a raspberry pi zero device that can run an OS while being hardware incapable of connecting to any network so that I can build my file of critical private keys, passwords etc.

Nobody should be using Google Authenticator. So many better options available. Please people, use a better 2FA application.

This is a good point. 1Password and KeePassXC (StrongBox on iOS) can also be used as authenticators as well and you don't have to worry about this issue.

That is correct. There are some Authenticator options that have a backup outside of a single app.
