I was told to change oil every 6 Months. Even if the mileage doesn't reach my 5k requirement. It's to prevent moisture build up apparently.

I can't believe they recommend waiting 10,000 miles between oil changes. That seems like too long to go without changing the oil in your car, no matter how much you drive. There are so many factors that affect how quickly oil breaks down, like how often you're stuck in stop-and-go traffic or the age of the car. Under normal driving conditions, I would never wait that long. It's just not worth the risk of damaging your engine. Change oil regularly guys

I’ve seen plenty of vehicles with 10k oil changes and thats not one of them. Thats more like 30k. 10k and the oil is just super dark with minor sludge. That oil is carboned up.

Well for one thing a 2017 Range Rover calls for 16,000 mile oil changes, for a second a Carfax says what shop services were done at. Sounds like these guys dont actually know how it was maintained. That said, Range Rovers are trash, dont buy one. I work on volvos, they demand 10k oil changes and their engines have horrific oil consumption issues and rarely survive past 175k miles. This requirement doesnt change between all their engine configurations. That alone tells you the 10k oil change is not /solely/ determined by engineering factors. Its a competitve feature for new car owners, no luxury car buyer will buy a car that demands 5k mile oil changes because it extends the reliable lifespan from 175k miles to 300k miles, that doesnt matter to Volvo buyers or Volvo, it only matters to poor people 10-20 years after the car was built. Corporate decides oil change intervals, engineers must build an engine to the 10k spec, not the other way around. That means they must naturally reduce reliability in higher power engines and at the end of their lifespan to satiate competitiveness. Volvo VEP engines are pretty unreliable and expensive to maintain.

10000 mile changes on my Toyota Corolla. Has 324,000 miles on it and still runs like a top getting 40 MPG on a gas engine. Ran my previous Corolla 375,000 miles and my 97 Chevy Malibu with a Toyota Camry powertrain for 321,000 miles. I call BS with my 27 years of experience. BTW, also put 220,000 on an 05 Cavalier that only died because the wiring harness was shot and couldn't be replaced. That was a 4 cylinder Chevy powertrain. Haven't changed a head gasket since 1996.

Owned a 2004 Toyota Camry with nearly 400,00 miles. Changed the oil every 9-10k. Used either Mobil1, Castrol or AMSoil full synthetic. After 15 years the car's interior began to dry rot; no problems with the engine. THIS is maintenance neglect NOT a lack of oil changes.

It looks like the oil change was never done. If the owner went to get an oil change at 10,000 miles, the dealership would say this is low mileage and not do the change, and charge for it . Or where ever they went .

Owner of 2002 Honda Goldwing here. Change the oil when Honda says to, every 8,000 miles. Use oil Honda says to, synthetic blend. Bike has 248,000 miles, no problems with oil fouling. Just do what the OEM says.

Driving habits have a lot to do with it, too. If it takes you 2 years to put 10,000 miles on a car, it’s from short trips, stop and go traffic, etc. The engine will rarely get up to operating temps for any significant period of time, and cannot evaporate condensation and fuel dilution. It is also considered to be extreme conditions by all manufacturers, meaning the time between oil changes should also determine intervals, not just mileage.

I have a 2007 corolla with over 300K miles. I’m the original owner. I’ve only ever done 10,000 mile oil changes with full synthetic. My car is still running strong. 10K intervals are fine. What you really should do is follow the owners manual recommendation. My 2004 Honda Odyssey says to do oil changes every 7,500. So that’s what I do. Don’t blame the oil change interval. Something else is wrong with that car.

Take the owner waiting one year to change oil at 10000 miles. Oil change needed for nearly 3 months a year ago. The owner is getting the wrong ideas about the manufacturer making junk.

My uncle told me this. A friend of his bought a "little old ladies car". It was very clean, 11,000 miles, 15 years old. She only drove it two miles to the store once a week. and every so often to get her hair styled. It never got fully warmed up. She was selling it to buy a smaller car easier to park. She told him it was due for oil change at 12000 miles. She told the guy to just drive through town and come right back. The car ran great. He bought it. When he drove it home, it would not go faster than 40. At home he checked the oil, it was full, but it was black. He forgot to check it, he was so excited to see how clean it was. He removed the drain plug but nothing came out. He knew it was full, so he poked the drain hole with a screwdriver and the oil came out, but slow. He removed the valve cover and it was really sludged up. He called a trusted mechanic and asked what to do. The old mechanic said, "Put the valve cover back on, install the drain plug. Fill it to the hole with kerosene. Remove spark plugs and give generous amount of STP gas treatment to each cylinder. Let it sit for a whole week. Drain the kerosene. Fill with one quart transmission fluid one pint Marvel mystery oil, and top it off with regular oil Add another pint to the gas tank. Remove spark plugs and crank engine to spit out the STP. Install new spark plugs and start it. Drive it 500 miles, change oil and repeat. But this time drive 1000 miles before changing oil. The car should be running better. Then Change oil and drive 3000 miles. Remove valve cover and see what happened. The guy was stunned. With each oil change the engine ran better until it could cruise at 65 with no trouble. Inside the valve cover it was clean as could be.

I got 176,000 miles. 2017 Mitsubishi 2.4L. Change my oil every 20k miles after the break-in changes. Not a drop of oil leaks. No burning oil. No cold start ticking. Nothing. Runs like day I bought it. Use a very good, expensive oil filter designed for synthetics and buy good synthetic oil. Change oil yourself. Shops and dealers usually only change your oil filter. Not the oil.

I work at a JLR specialist and never come across this with regularly serviced cars, that's either not been serviced for a long long time or it's got the wrong oil in it.

This is silly. That motor is not representative of most Euro cars that specify 10k mi oil intervals. I've put HUNDREDS of thousands of miles on multiple cars (Audi, BMW, Mercedes) and NONE of them have had a single oil related issue.

The owner taking 3 minutes of their time to actually look at the oil on their most expensive appliance would've prevented this issue. Just check on your fluids once a month. Especially, right after a service. It's not rude to check their work. It's due diligence. A hot tip: If you take good care of your vehicle, your mechanic is likely to take extra care of it. An example would be a clean undercarriage and cleaning under the hood.
