I could have sworn injector #3 showed zero data when you were scrolling past the injector data, I thought for sure the injector was going to be one of the issues.

So hard to believe that fluid can be that critical, my mind is blown.

Been doing 10,000 mile oil changes on my turbo Mini Cooper since I owned it new. Some done on the maintenance plan and everything after 50,000 miles done by me. Put a turbo on at 140,000 miles and at 150,000 miles did the timing chain just in case. When I took off the valve cover you could eat off the rockers they are so clean.

oil type for standard transmission mostly is 80W90. I am in Canada, and in winter at -40C it's hard to shift, so i use red ATF fluid from day 1. 23 years or 177K kilometers later no problem. My car is 2000 Cougar.

I have the luxury of having a heated pole barn in my backyard. I realize not everyone is so fortunate. Anyway, I buy Costco oil when it's on sale and do simple maintenance like this myself. We have three cars and trucks and four motorcycles. Oh and one pontoon boat, two leaf flowers, two riding mowers. The three snowmobiles don't count they are two strokes! It's under $25 to do an oil change. So why extend it? To save $50 a year? When I had a company car, our policy was 5k on oil. Now my policy is 3-4k on oil. My truck and her small car are both turbo engines. I'm told that those need shorter oil intervals than the v8 in our SUV. Auto Zone takes the used oil for free. Thanks for your informative video.

Impossible a bearing could go out in one day by a only minor chemistry difference in the oil. Seems more likely, especially from the view of it, it was already deteriorated. Moral of the story, do a thorough test drive of vehicle noting anything concerning areas you are goin to work on…BEFORE pulling it into the shop. Good on you to make it right, but, it was already damaged…unless the oil you put in wasn’t “Oily”;-) especially after 1 day!

For the extensions I got the Snap on set of 3/8, 1/4, and 1/2. I love there plastic case I just use that for keeping them organized. I got the wobble extensions and gonna get the regular soon but it makes it easy to organize as they have their own place and easy to set up in the tool box

I do a lot of short trips and idling and I change my oil every 1500-2000 miles. I've done this for years with every car I've ever had and I've never had any sludge of any kind, always spotless. Good oil, good filters and frequent changes are cheaper than a new engine

I will always believe that there had to be some degree of wear and/or damage prior to the fluid change. Did we get a good look at the old fluid? Maybe there was a clue there? But I enjoy this video especially because it happens a lot in the real world. Sometimes you're the pigeon and sometimes you're the statue!

Thanks for being upfront and honest and taking one for the team. I'm a shop owner. When i get a client's car i have a policy to road test every car and document and inform and ask the client of any and all problems prior to any repairs. I never drive the car from the lot onto the lift without a road test! Was the whine or noise there before the service? how many miles driven after the service or on a prior road test before service-its just strange it happen so quick even with the the same weight oil-yes i known the oil you used was not bmw with certain properties but--- maybe it had a prior issue??? Thanks again for the detail video. Thumps up!

All I do is regularly check my oil, car is NA so no turbo stressing the oil. Change it every 15,000km so around 9k miles. Also dont forget transmission changes and diffs. As well as coolant, and bleed and flush your brake lines.

If only BMW had the level of accountability and integrity of you and your shop, they would still be on the top of the heap of the luxury vehicle market. Thanks for being big enough accept the responsibility of what happened and retain the trust of your clients and viewers as that definitely sets you apart from the norm!

For a mechanic, his understanding of mechanics is not very impressive. Of course it will hold your weight. The mechanical advantage when hanging and gripping is huge. As long as your hands grip both sides, the more weight added tha tighter the grip

Please let us know if some BMW guru ever reaches out to you and explains what caused that. This teaches me that I need to carefully check the old fluid coming out of the vehicle. If this wasn't due to the fluid you put in, then it was pre-existing, and the old fluid would have had the shavings, too.

Hats off to you for fixing that mistake. But I have a feeling that bearing was on its way out before your shop serviced it and it just happened to give up the ghost after leaving the shop. But at the end of the day, I believe in using parts and fluids as the factory requires. But I have feeling that the wrong oil was not the main cause, because it is still basically general metal being used in the manufacture process. Why only one bearing failed and not all in the diff.

I know that the Diff had problems when the customer brought it in, NO diff goes bad or makes noise in a day or two ! Now if the tech forgot to put any fluid back in , when he drain it .............yea then it will make noise ! But with the wrong fluid........................Big BS there for sure ! Just like Automatic Trans, NOT a CV, you put the wrong fluid , it will not go bad , might shift funny, but go bad that"s BS also , now if its low on fluid..........yea..................but wrong fluid...................ALL BS !

It's super easy to be an idiot and invite potential problems doing a jump start. It's nearly as easy to donit right, and nearly eliminate associated risks. I've never denied anyone a jump, no plan on changing that policy. Harder now to find a jump when I need one, as everyone is worried about damaging their car's v@gina. Sux that you are using your platform to bolster needless fear and associated anti-social behavior. This is one way they divide us.

Even as a lube tech, any true professional would verify the oil. Like you said, whether you're flat rate, hybrid, hourly, etc. just do your job. People don't understand the tolerances that components are made with today ask for a special fluid for that very reason. The fact it requires a thinner oil, yes all it could take is a day for it to start crying the way it did. Super informative and thank you for the transparency. Hopefully your tech doesn't get grilled too hard and can bounce back from this speed bump.

There is no way that fluid caused the damage. The weights are too close. My Trackhawk diffs call for 75-85 and I ran 75-90 no issues.
