I agree. Just create spec stuff for the kind of thing you want to do. If someone offered me something for free I would be thinking there’s a catch or worse still they must be 💩.

I'd like to add that we recently closed on a decent sized job where the client never even looked at our work before we gave them the proposal. I'll admit, I was kind of disappointed (I'm proud of the work we do and I like showing it) but I'm glad we landed the deal. Sometimes, not all the time...you can land work without having examples of a specific project.
