It's the not complaining one that bothers me, especially because it says to not complain at all (at least that's how I perceive it). When we complain, there's valuable emotional information we could get by processing it and letting it run its course. Once you do that, there is immense clarity and sense of agency about the changes one needs to make about a situation.

@@heisenburg8608 That's the thing. Complaining is not always a negative thing, repeated complaining to express helplessness sure is, but not doing it at all is suppressing valuable emotional information. Complaining shows us where our frustrations and discontent lies, and what changes we can make to make our lives better. Complaining can make us realize another emotion that might be underneath it- anger, very powerful to make us realise our agency and mobilize us to take action.
@heisenburg8608
@heisenburg8608 6 ай бұрын
@@thetuckinlady complaining is an act, you don’t need action in order to understand yourself inside. I’m well aware of when I’m angry and the triggers, I don’t need to act up with that energy and cast spells to people around me (especially loved ones) in order to figure myself out. Instead I observe the thoughts I have so that I decide which my heart leads with. I ignore the complaining negative thoughts and lead with the solutions and the positive thoughts. There’s no escape the negatives of life but self management is key. Negative thoughts and emotions have good value and are essential to us for learning and growing spiritually but it can all be controlled from within, external forces are irrelevant to this journey. In general terms it’s just good habit to be able to deflect the negative thoughts and act on only positives so that you also raise the frequency of propels around you. To me that’s like the basic human requirement, to bring eachother up instead of down, regardless of how one feels inside.

If there is one thing I don't understand about stoicism is the "never complain" part. Statements like "complaining achieves nothing" and you should "never do it". When nuance goes out the window in quotes like this, it's pretty easy to ask questions such as: What if I'm the victim of an injustice and I need to complain about it so people are aware and, in turn, help solve the issue? Nope, just accept it. What if my partner is treating me poorly? Just accepting and not complaining about it when having the conversation could help? What if I need therapy? The whole concept of it is technically complaining about your problems IN ORDER for them to be resolved or making them not have that much impact. A much more intense example, what about the civil rights movement? The whole point was about people complaining about something IN ORDER for something to be done. At what point does it not just become passivity? I 100% agree that most people (myself included) complain about frivolous things and complaining about those will solve nothing. It is true we often care about things that have no effect on us. It is possible I'm misinterpreting something however, "never complain" if often mentioned without exception and it's this lack of nuance I'm referring to as there are legitimate reasons to complain about things. Am I misinterpreting something?

This is just me, it may not apply to you or the questions you ask. For me, I speak facts, have discussions, look into yourself, come to an understanding as to how feel. There’s a reason these things upset me. Then I try to stay in the now, I’ve had to stop dwelling on these things, it destroys my peace. I have a therapist, I try to come to an understanding, not dwell. To me that’s what therapy is all about, to help me grow, look within myself. I’ve found complaining, going over and over something’s tends to only upset me more. In the end I’m no better off then is was. I do talk to friends about things that brother me, and again I try not to dwell on it. I’ve come to an understanding complaining is different then having a discussion, or conversation. Many people have said usually a person wants to just vent, just to have that person listen. Not to try to fix me, or tell me what they’d do, just listen. I’m a recovering addict, like many things I found myself addicted to complaining. At times I have to find a quite space, breath, just center myself as they say. Anyway, somewhere along the way I hope you find the answers to your questions. I seen this one day… “You’re destroying your peace by confronting everything you observe”…. I have it written down, next to my bed. Everyday I have to see it, it helps me to stay in the now. It helps me remember to be good to myself, I deserve my peace. ✨🌹✨❤️‍🔥✨🌹✨

I don't think seeking help or assistance to correct an injustice is "complaining." I think that is a form of taking action, as long as you're not expecting them to just fix it for you. I think complaining is "woe is me, someone take pity on poor poor me." There is no action to it, it's just... complaining. And the worst possible person you can complain to is you. Just tearing yourself down, whining about how terrible this is for you. You're just wallowing in self pity. That's what they're talking about when they say don't complain.

I think “acceptance” has always been a poor choice of words. “Recognition” is far better. “Acceptance” has a connotation of approval. Recognition that some situation exists in reality and must be dealt with because that how things actually are, does not connote any approval or disapproval of that situation. Not everything needs your recognition because not every situation are you in a position to have an effect.

whenever u have an opinion/whenever u judge smth as good or bad/whenever u have a preference, whenever u have a desire, you will eventually suffer for it. Do not have too many desires and do not pick them unconsciously. Pick just 1 overwhelming desire that is ok to suffer for. What you are saying is the exception, to when it is worth to suffer for it. In everythign that is not ur overwhelming desire, it does not matter, your opinion has no value, it idoes not matter, it is impermaneny and is always changing. It is a delusion, not based in reality, it is based on mental formations. When my brain wants a cigar, i say your opinion does not matter (brains opinion does not matter). Someone said: You will only achieve peace , when u realise ur opinion has no value, it does not matter. It is a sensation in the body that cause a negative emotion and not the reality. You observe this by practicing vipassana meditation, you can play with sensation and emotion, to intensify an emotion or to detensify. Even pain is a sensation, it can be increased or decreased. If u have resentment for it, then it tends to intensify during meditation. If you have attachment for a pleasent sensation it tends to dissapear that sensation. If you are equanim about it, then unpleasant sensations detensify, and pleasant sensations tend to stay longer before they vanish. If you want to learn more about suffering, i suggest 10 day vipassana retreat, buddhism, google attachment/aversion/equanimity and using impermanence as a tool to deal with attachement-the source of suffering.

Adam, I'm really glad you asked this question. These are the kinds of things I think about as well. Sometimes I even wonder if this is a potential downside of stoicism, that at least some people will use this practice to endure 'hard times' imposed by authorities, for example, rather than work to prevent or change those circumstances. I love Ryan's work as well and I definitely see Stoicism as a huge net positive as it certainly promotes responsibility and strength of character. Long story short: I don't know the answer though. 🤷

Thank you such great advice, I love the don’t complain it drain out so much energy for nothing and hearing complaints makes you just want to run away from the person that you know complains so much. Instead practice gratitude. Look for the positive in everyone you are bound to find it.

@@vivianjahncke2140I'll preface what I say with; I don't follow his content closely, but I already live by these principles because we're taught this in AA recovery. You can still live an ethical life and follow these principles. It's a question of control... A question of whether there is anything inside of your control that you can do to help. You mentioned, "standing idly by"... That means there might be something inside of your control to help a situation. If there is nothing you can do to help, zero actions you could take... Then why worry needlessly about it? Just surrender it to your higher power, and walk away from the burden of worry, fear, and stress. If there's an action you can take to help, then do that action... But you can still surrender the outcome to your higher power, and walk away from worry, fear, and stress... You know you did everything you could do, so you'll sleep soundly at night with a clear conscience. That's my two cents, and I hope it helps.

Marcus didn't write you shouldn't complain. He wrote to himself, to not complain about *life in court*. This is the context, and it's the core of the claim. Meaning, he didn't say you shouldn't compain, never, about anything. He was refering to his life as an emperor, to his duties and privileges

@@mouse9831 well it depends I have read enough stoics like Seneca, Marcus, etc... and it seems to me stoic ethics is concerned with individual ethics , not really in large social injustices, i have never seen a stoic commentary on any social issue of the time but all emphasis seems to be on the individual. So to me stoicism is lacking when it comes to ethics applied to society. Epictetus, marcus, seneca none ever criticize the state or laws or slavery or roman wars, etc... it kind of its implied they approve of it or at least do not oppose it.
