I recently read The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck (so late to the hype, I knowww) and this reminds me a lot of the concepts Mark talks about. Y'know, like the backwards law, that caring less will actually make things easier and have things fall into place more naturally.

Not caring is the best advice I have given others when going into job interviews. If you’ve convinced yourself getting the job isn’t that important, and you’re there to have a nice conversation and to get to know the interviewer, that’s when you tend to come across as confident. I’ve never been interviewed and not offered a job, but I have turned down jobs several times.

I call this "Trying Too Hard". My philosophy is "Rough Enough Is Good Enough". And you know if you're not doing enough when it fails, so next time you step up a notch. Eventually you find that minimum that is the right balance, and it's fine to hover around there for a while until it's time to push again. Don't be too reactionary. It's instinctive. Listen to advice, but trust your instincts.

The first draft of my dissertation I called the Diarrhea Draft, because I knew from the beginning that it would be a pile of shit. I needed to get some basic ideas down without getting stuck. Then I figured out which pieces I really liked and started working on them, wherever they landed in the text. I do a lot of drafts and eventually get more or less where I want.

I was watching a Podcast yesterday and the guy said that Happiness comes down to a simple Equation: Happiness = Experience - Expectations He said that you might think that owning an Astin Martin will be absolutely perfect and make your life better. But then notice that the stitching on one of the seats is just slightly off. All of a sudden that high expectation just ruins the whole experience for you. Hell, expensive cars break down far more often than a Honda or Toyota. This goes for holidays or relationships or whatever you do in life. Lower the Expectations and just savour the moments as they come. Enjoy the experience for what it is, rather than creating a belief that it should be something that it is not. All thoughts and Experiences are Neutral until we apply meaning to them. There were people who were in Auschwitz who found a way to have a positive mindset that helped get them through and past it. There are people who are billionaires and have everything, but absolutely hate their lives. You are the author of your life and you get to define what is good or bad. Biggest prison we have is the one we create for ourselves...

@SjeikJoriz

Try looking at it the other way round. The confidence will come as soon as you start to not give a shit. Because confidence comes from being true to yourself and being true to yourself means not making all the other stuff more important than yourself. And from that point onwards you can do good in the world. Good luck!

To get to the point where you can not give a shirt, you need to have have in many hours and worked through a lot of feedback to improve your skills so that you have the instincts that let you not give a shirt. Repetition and practice and trial and error. You can not give a shirt from the start, and maybe you are from the beginning awesome. But more likely you need to be shirty and get better first.

If you are re-vamping your wardrobe, let me make a recommendation. I have this FABULOUS shirt that I share with my husband. My original intention was to buy it for him and then steal it, end of story. But this shirt is SO AMAZING and WONDERFUL that we both keep wearing it. It is grey, it doesn't explode, and it has a dinosaur on it. Had we known how truly fabulous this shirt was, we would have bought more. 10/10, 100% recommend. Love it. and not giving a s#%& is super hard.

And this is exactly why Shatner's best performances came from when the directors wore him out with dozens of wasted takes. Because he always tried too hard otherwise. I watched your stuff back when it was only about a year old, just before Craig With A Wig came in, and love how your output has evolved yet also conserved over the years. Well, yeah, for sure. But, like the sound is a perfect example. If the point is for people to hear what you’re saying, and you’re 100% confident they’ll stick with you no matter what, then yeah it doesn’t matter. But if it’s unpleasant, I would worry some people would click away, or at least be low-level annoyed enough that they won’t really be focused on the content. I guess that’s what you covered with a couple caveats about “once you know what you’re doing”. I guess what I’m saying is the one mention of knowing when good enough is good enough, that would be really interesting to explore.
