18 years ago after deciding to give complements more often, I got my car's alignment fixed and forgot to compliment the mechanic on his interesting eye color. When he left a voicemail about additional work the car might need, I left one in return which was "No Thanks" to the work, and that he should take off his glasses more often to show off his eyes. He called back and we set up our first date (which we celebrate as our anniversary). That compliment has brought me more joy than I could have ever expected.

@amandawilbur451
@amandawilbur451 3 жыл бұрын
@@gumija same here, and now that my 9 year old son is also being really harsh on himself I figured it was time for a change. So at dinner we each give a compliment for someone else and a compliment to ourselves. Some days are harder than others, but once you get started it gets easier and we're all a little bit more positive about ourselves now. It also motivated my daughter to do something that she was anxious about because I told her if she tried it that it would make a great compliment. It also doesn't have to be big and all encompassing baby at the center of the universe level complimenting either, some days its just as tiny as having accomplished a simple goal like taking out the trash.

There is a really good book called "How to Talk so Kids and Listen and Listen so Kids can Talk", that Anna Akana talked about in one of her videos that I have now read thanks to her. In the book, the authors point out that we, as humans, we are not taught very well on how to speak compassionately towards one another. We don't listen well and respond with, how Craig put it, "me mememem ME me me me me". At a young age we aren't taught to give compliments to people, or acknowledge correctly people's problems without giving our own feedback. It's a good book and this is a great video/experiment that everyone should do every day.

Many people aren’t good at receiving compliments. The proper response to a sincere compliment is, “Thank you”. I hesitate to compliment sometimes because some people will argue and make me feel bad for saying it. For example: Compliment: “Nice shirt”. Response: “ Really? I literally pulled it out of the trash.”
@rukbat3
@rukbat3 3 жыл бұрын
I was scolded about this once when I was a kid, and it really made an impression on me. I learned that when you reject a person's compliment, you're not just "being humble" the way you think; you're actually questioning their judgment in giving you a compliment in the first place. It's much better to accept the compliment at face value, which has the benefit of making you feel better as well.

@@aslmad1 It definitely leads to more compliments (as well as that sense of I don't want to do that again cuz it was so hard to get them to agree to anything :/). My response to op was that, if they pulled the shirt from the trash, then clearly they have good taste! And thanks for saving the environment, that's really cool of them! And thrifty. Etc. All genuine, but leaves everyone feeling worse and like nothing should have been said at all in the first place.

I took a personality test. What I really remembered was it stated I held back my affection. So I started being more affectionate to my immediate family. Saying I love you, hugging, giving kisses on the cheek, if I sat next to them. I would lay my head on their shoulder or encourage them to lay their head on mine. It felt very werid to me to do that. At first, everyone keep giving me the "what do you want" side eye. I told my mom I love you with a hug and a cheek kiss. She actually cried. Saying she felt I didn't love her as much as she loves me. All my relationships, have gotten closer. Especially, my kids. I have noticed they are more confident, laughing more, and so far every other day we watch a movie. We all take turns picking a movie. They show me what they like. I show them movies that have always stuck with me through childhood. We are all are more affectionate.

I'm a big f***ing complementer, I'm really a serial complementer, even to people I barely know. It's true that it is a little bit too humbling and you'll always find people that put you down and/or people that aren't really into being complemented (especially by another person with whom they don't have a close relationship). Having said that, I'd still recommend to everyone to do it anyway. People who actually like it tend to bond with you so much faster and it all feels way more natural than a 'normal' relationship. Besides, being humble and a good person to be around overall are awesome traits.

When I saw a thing I liked on the internet I used to just think to myself “Wow this is an excellent thing!” Now when I think that I make sure to just write it in a quick comment. Just feels like a good/easy way to drown out internet negativity.

I heard this advice a while back ago: if you’re complimenting someone you don’t know well, compliment their taste, not their body. So, “your sweater is so fun!” Or “I love Stephen King, too!” and NOT “your eyes are like the darkest of chocolates” or “ooh, your skin is so soft.” You can stretch and merge them with people you know a little better (“I like your haircut”).

As a woman who has been complimented by strangers.... yeah it's creepy. Like, you're not creepy, but being complimented by some strange man is creepy. I'm just trying to live my life here without being talked at by some rando, you know?

Wheezy, I have realized that much of the paranoia around complimenting people or friends relates to overthinking it. DONT OVERTHINK IT!!! Everyone appreciates compliments, whether you have never seen them before or whether you have known them your whole life. Even if they respond harshly, complimenting is an act of kindness that even bitter people recognize as “good.” It definitely helps you get out of your own head, and that is something that contributes to happiness

A few years ago, I realized I liked certain people because they were supportive, genuine individuals and then I realized I could show that to others by complimenting them. I started doing that along with being a decent listener and offering to help when I could and I have a big group of genuine friends now in my 50's. I still need to compliment more but what I realized is that many people aren't comfortable with it and probably need it more than we realize. I also saw a Tweet about complimenting the next 4 tweets you see to spread goodness in the world, so I did it. It was nerve wracking, but most of the responses were little red hearts or an, "oh gosh, thanks so much." It was a good experiment. Love the video, as always!

What I love about this channel is how much you highlight your own life in an interesting way. You really take the time to show us the people you appreciate - your wife, your parents, and your friends who aren't even shown on screen. That makes it feel a lot more human than it would be if you did a different kind of video, which is something really refreshing. Also your videos have good lighting.

Thank you, Craig, for the Camera Conspiracies YT recommendation. I was crying I was laughing so hard at his comments on one of the Amazon comments videos that his did a while ago. I can't wait to check out the other channels you mentioned. Also, I've been an Ali fan for a long time now, and it's interesting that he highlighted Peter McKinnon's channel, though likely knowing full well that PM doesn't at all need a boost from Ali, as he's doing just fine on his own. I love this positivity, thanks for the view change!
