Full Episode: • Christian Poverty, Voc...
Fr. John and I discuss the inclination we all have to hide our true selves from God and from others. The parts of us that we see as unlovable or ugly cannot stay hidden forever, and, often, hiding causes us to crack and build up pressure which gradually becomes too much to bear alone. God calls out to us to let Him in; to let Him see us.

"For in truth we are not called once only, but many times; all through our life Christ is calling us. He called us first in Baptism; but afterward also; whether we obey His voice or not, He graciously calls us still. If we fall down from our Baptism, He calls us to repent... He calls us again and again in order to justify us again and again --and again and again, and more and more, to sanctify and glorify us." John Henry Newman

That is so beautiful…. There’s a book called “Jesus the Bridegroom “ by Brant Pitre who expands on this. And this video reminds me of the story of Rapunzel: she could have left her dungeon tower on her own but the witch convinced her that she’s too ugly and unworthy for love. It took the love of a handsome prince to convince her that she is worthy. And she was free of the lies and the tower.

Such wisdom. That is exactly the mind game Satan played with me for years. He convinced me that since it was impossible for me to hide anything from God it would be impossible for me to return to Him because he knew my heart and my heart wasn't pure. He mixed just enough truth in with a ton of lies to keep that wedge between me and God. If you feel that way, that you aren't worthy, realize where that is coming from. Satan and his minions have one goal, to take every soul with them into the abyss. And they will stop at nothing to do it. The first step is asking for forgiveness, the second is accepting it. God will take care of the first part, we just have to have enough faith to accept it and believe in our heart that we are forgiven. That one is on us. Thank you for this video. That message can never be delivered enough.

I almost started crying. I am a practicing Catholic (convert from Presbyterianism back in 2003). I am in spiritual direction with a great priest, and a PWA patron. So, I’m fairly well dialed in to theology. But this brief video showed me why I still feel so blocked. I’m hiding from God. I *think* I’ve been letting Him in, but I haven’t been. It’s so scary, but it’s critical I practice turning toward God’s gaze. Wow! Thanks guys.

This is such a beautiful discussion. In my LDS highschool religion class, I was actually told to skip Song of Solomon because it was for married adults. It was portrayed as inappropriate and unnecessary. I obeyed because that's what I did those days (and also because it shortened my reading assignment), but I did always wonder why God would put something that inappropriate in the bible. Now I think it's just that the teacher didn't know what to do with it. When you don't see Christ as the bridegroom, it seems more bizarre to include this. But if it's in the bible there must be good reason, dismissing it is an odd approach for "the full restoration of Christianity". I look forward to praying with it.

Thank you for this discussion. I have begun to read The Song of Songs two or three times over my past fifty to fifty-five years (I’m 71). I haven’t completed the second chapter because reading it has made me feel very uncomfortable. I could not listen to Jesus talk to me like that. I’ve been ashamed because, as you said, I know what I am, and it’s not something I want to look at, let alone, let someone else see. I have, with the help of the Holy Spirit, come to look at myself more honestly and still know Jesus died for me to save me, because he loves me. I will attempt to read that particular book again, perhaps more easily if I see the beloved as The Church of Christ, and not me as an individual. God bless you both.

Sometimes when we read the Exodus story we may feel more akin to Egypt rather than Israel, but we have to remember that when it was Israel who rejected the infant Jesus, it was Egypt that the Holy Family fled to and nursed the infant Lord. God sanctified Egypt and gave Egypt a place in the Divine Plan despite her former persecution of Israel. We are never left alone.

So I guess u don’t hold to the Tabula rasa. We are not blank. That we are not taught that we are bad by the 100’s of “No’s” we are told/day that impacts our self perspective? God’s infinite love towards us cannot overcome the fragility of the human condition of the self reflection of even a baby? The

I would prefer to think about the Master Craftsman Artist who weaves a perfect rug and then purposefully builds a flaw into it: the nature “otherness” from Him/Herself. What is “other” than the Infinite and perfection, in this case? It is the finite and the imperfect. That is nothing to be ashamed of. We are beautiful, awesome, and wonderfully made. We are as Thomas would say, “perfect” as ALL THINGS are perfect in so far as they exist. It is only others-like Lucifer, who criticize God’s creation and complain that it is NOT perfect, point out the flaws, devalues, and want to throw it on the ash heap of failures of what they strive to be, but failed to achieve: perfection-Divinity itself.

The Lord is just. He takes into account our weakness. That's why purgatory exists. But we do need to strive to do our best, do good works and help our neighbor, take the sacrament of confession, go to church on Sunday etc. ""If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9

I just don’t buy this. Yes God loves us. But like the sun shines on nuclear waste dumps. Because it’s the nature of God to love. It’s the nature of the sun to shine. This makes it sound like a sappy 15 year old who’s infatuated with the other who’s infatuated with him. I’m with that great philosopher Pink Floyd. All in all you’re just another brick in the wall.
