It's actually good a couple weeks before a fight. I used to always use 16 oz but then my timing and everything was thrown off in fight because I wasn't used to the glove size being so much lighter. I think Canelo and pacquiao does the same thing but Canelo only does it a couple weeks before a fight.

Honestly is not a bad advice. The extra padding on the knuckles means that you will reach your target faster, actually giving you a slight reach advantage. It may not seem important, but perfect technique and power is based ALSO on flawless distance management. Mayweather is not a good example, the guy busted both of his hands at the start of his career, and he prioritized safety before anything else to save his career after that. He didnt work with power, but with flawless defence and used a lot of arm punches in his fights as money may. And he is a phenom in that, so people should stop copying it. Both in amateur and professional boxing ive seen countless of boxers being destroyed because they tried to imitate some greats style. There is room for heavy bag training with 16 oz and i did for a while, but honestly my technique seemed to suffer a bit in that period. Probably the best is doing it with both type of gloves, it is honestly idiotic to train only with different gloves from the one u are competing with.

@user-wp5uq3rg3bshadow boxing is 100% a way of dialling in techniques In a fight hence why it’s called shadow boxing as your shadowing in ring movement. If your shadow boxing and just throwing full speed 0 technique you’re shadow boxing incorrectly. A 3 minute shadow boxing should simulate a 3 minute round, with moments of explosive combos to defence to working off the back foot all things simulating a fight NOT just speed

16oz for sparring and regular partner/technique training. Then 10-12oz gloves for bag and pad work. If youre doing a lot of volume on the bag like a pro fighter then you will still want to hit the bag with 16oz occasionally to avoid injury, but rotating in smaller gloves in training keeps you honest so you keep that “feel” when you connect on a good punch. Also bigger gloves are very forgiving. You can injure your hand on a sloppy punch in a smaller glove that you got away with in the 16oz gloves.

Agreed, I use 16oz for spar and 10oz for pads/mitts/bags at 6’1” 175lbs walking. There’s too much cushion on 16 and it will deteriorate the glove quicker and for beginners I see them not landing with the correct parts because it’s so cushioned that they hurt their hands/wrists when going into camp with 10’s and 12’s. I’m actually shocked by the amount of people going against this, because yes when you’re sloppy and tired and going 16oz on the heavy bag especially, I see alot of bad habits build that carry into the next day

Depends on your hand size. If you can go for a smaller size... Go for it, but make sure it has enough padding. Padding helps a lot. People are all on punching power with heavier oz gloves, but honestly... You get more out of nice thick padded gloves at a smaller oz. Good to use bigger oz gloves every once in a while to test yourself and work on conditioning though. Use your heavier ones once or twice in a bit.

You should use 10oz gloves but not for the reasons he suggested Use them when hitting the heavy bag because they help to build and strengthen your knuckles and make them more durable, helps you to gain stronger fists, also if you are a beginning it's better to use them on the mitts so you get use to timing and hand eye coordination and you won't strain your arms too much

@@SouthpawJoe Bag work with heavier gloves won't make you faster and faster permanently. Lighter gloves while doing bag work will make you a lot more technical, making you focus more on technique and a way to process more speed while practicing your technique. You will capture more of your technique rather than what your body is adjusted to. It is good to use heavier gloves every once in a bit though, but don't make them your permanent for bag work...unless you have huge hands. If you can go smaller in oz, then go for it.. Using smaller oz will help you learn a lot more than you think, it isn't just about technique only, but also your fists and wrists learning to adapt to your own punching at a more impactful state.
