The 1959 Candidates Tournament was hosted by three cities in Yugoslavia. The first 14 rounds were played in Bled, rounds 15-21 in Zagreb, and rounds 22-28 in Belgrade. This event would select the next challenger to world champion Mikhail Botvinnik, who had just recaptured his title in the Botvinnik - Smyslov World Championship Rematch (1958). Mikhail Tal, Svetozar Gligorić, Pal Benko, Tigran Petrosian, Friðrik Ólafsson and Bobby Fischer qualified from the Portoroz Interzonal (1958). Vasily Smyslov and Paul Keres were seeded directly into the candidates tournament on the strength of their 1-2 finish in the previous Amsterdam Candidates (1956). Harry Golombek was arbiter, and the seconds were Bent Larsen (Fischer), Yuri Averbakh, joined later by Alexander Koblents (Tal), Vladas Mikenas (Keres), Isaac Boleslavsky (Petrosian), Igor Bondarevsky (Smyslov) Aleksandar Matanovic (Gligorić), Klaus Viktor Darga and Ingi Randver Johannsson (Ólafsson), and Rudolf Maric (Benko)

Thanks for the commentary and the photo. These guys look so young. In this game, you can sense how Fischer at this point in time lagged his Soviet competitors. Impressive that he made up so much ground so quickly. | Looking forward to more Keres games and trying to diagnose when the real Paul Keres was playing and when he wasn't.

You pronounce so many words better than I ever could, and your English is really impressive. I never know if it is annoying or appreciated to say something like I'm about to... so here goes: The word motif around 13:13 is pronounced more like "Moe-TEEF" and the way you said it sounded like "motive."

WOW! Your pronounciation of Friðrik's name was excellent for a foreigner! Most people butcher it! 1958 in Portoroz is one of the most famous accomplishment of an Icelandic chess player ever! Fridrik of course the legend of Icelandic chess having beaten Fischer, Tal and many of the strongest players of his era. Fridrik was kind of the reason I restarted posting videos on my channel. He had a lecture where I recorded a little footage and later posted his examination of his win against Tal. In that same lecture he talked about the student tournament in Varna which he played as a warm up tournament before Portoroz. That was the first time he met Bobby and he had a funny story about their first encounter as well as a great story about Tal. Friðrik was of course later president of FIDE and is very respected in Iceland and the chess world.

I like the tradition of examining the standings of the 1959 Candidates Tournament, I have them burned into my brain. I will keep trying to impress someone with them, but last time they asked me about the 1960 Candidates Tournament and I had to shamefully admit that I have no idea who won that one. And 1961 - absolutely no clue.
@hubertsang7418
@hubertsang7418 2 жыл бұрын
Do not worry, there was no 1960 and 1961 candidates. The world championship was a three year event. The next candidates cycle was 1962, won by Boris Spassky, and it was the individual match play implemented by FIDE after Fischer's famous letter complaining about the soviet domination of chess. And Spassky's road to the crown was a very impressive one, in his climb to the summit, in two candidate cycles and world championships, he played the toughest opposition possible; he won against: Tal, Keres, Geller ( twice), Larsen, Korchnoi, Petrossian. And lost to Petrossian once.

#suggestion agadmator could you do a game with a bishop knight endgame? Was looking into endgames and saw that they're pretty rare, seems interesting. I'd actually like to see more finished endgames - most of your games are top-level players who resign before they really get into the endgame because they trust one another's abilities, but I'd bet most of your viewers (myself included) could stand to work on their endgames.

It's funny to see Fischer standing there in his striped sweater eye-balling the fine tailored suit of one of the opponents on the photo. Maybe it was after this tournament that Fischer decided to start wearing and collecting suits jackets:)

Fischer changed his wardrobe thanks to the suggestions of Pal Benko, and later on became obsessed with suits. Nowadays, another young player that has switched to suits is Alireza Firouzja.
