Funny how you nailed it. My neighbor who grew up here in Idaho Falls in the country next to me called it pasture grass. You have shown it to be Kentucky and tall fescue. It was planted on an acre and half originally to replace the pasture around the house, and 30 years later, it’s a bitch to keep growing. But now I know a bit more how to take care of it thanks to you.

You're right, it's amazing how many lawn channels assume we have their type of grass, or at least their temp zone. I'll spend some time here, thanks. Looking at seed heads helps a lot, too. I see both stolons and seed heads that suggest Bermuda for me, so that's how I'll treat it and see what happens. I'm in upper middle TN.

I have either St Augustine or Bermuda in my cool season lawn and I live north east and I might be looking to transition to a full time cool season or just making that entire part of my lawn warm season so it looks more uniform. I need a way to kill or get rid of the warm season grass without using a bunch of herbicides (I'll use it if I have to) and I'm not trying to break the bank. I've tried uprooting them on one side of my lawn and it seemed to work but eventually it started reappearing a few months after I put down my cool season grass seed so in the winter my law looks like a cheetahs fur. I've been searching online for any information or at least a tutorial about transitioning but I've barely found anything concrete. Can anyone point me in a direction or offer any advice? I'm trying to get ahead while the warm season grave and weeds are still dormant. Also most of the lawn care stores in my area do not carry any warm season grass of any type so that's part of the reason I'm looking to transition to cool season

I have a house with Centipede grass. I live in the cool season part of Ohio. The house was built in 1910, and apparently has had this type of grass since then. When I first saw it, I asked people what type of grass it is? I was told it couldn’t be Centipede. After doing my research, I’m confident it’s Centipede. It’s light green, and grows slow, I cut it every two weeks. It’s uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. It doesn’t like to be walked on a lot, and it turns completely brown in cold months. Do you agree?

Bent grass is very easy to find. Late June in Ohio its the first grass to go dormant and the last grass to wake up in the spring. In the mid fall it rocks out and thrives. It does not handle drought very well. I had an infestation of it in my yard. I cut tall, 3.75 to 4 inches. Bent grass at the height will not stand up. It just mats down. It is a very high maintenance grass that is not ideal for a yard in my opinion.

I still have no idea which grass I have and why my type isn't mentioned according to it's main standout characteristic: I'm in Georgia, so it should be a warm season grass, and it's incredibly short. When I mow it I can use a very short 2.5 setting on my deck height (other grass I use a 4.5), and aside from lots of weed intrusion, particularly crab grass, it doesn't need any watering or other maintenance. It's not putting-green type grass, it can't be cut that short as far as I know. I'm at the point where I'm going to take clippings to my local sod supplier.
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
In this case you’ll need to do that or take it to a local extension office for identification. Thanks for watching.

@@BudgetLawns So it's not as simple as noting the grass height? Any other grass that I've mowed would be burned if I clipped it that low.... The lawn I have the grass doesn't even want to grow high. Is this not a characteristic particular to one type?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
Height does help to indicate grass type, but just about any grass not mowed will grow high, even bermuda. It just depends on your current mowing habits and other cultural practices. There are a lot of factors at play. It's not ever black and white in lawn care.

Is it possible to have multiple types of grass? I live in Houston, TX and my lawn is 80% weed and the small pieces i see of grass aren’t always similar to each other. I see St. Augustine section where the grass is thick and has those vines on top of the soil connecting each other but then i also see individual patches of grass. Thers so many other kinds I feel like. Those are professional grasses people plant, but what about clover and broad leaf weeds, do certain chemicals kill specific grasses? And can one good grass weed out the rest of your random grass yard if you seed it enough?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
There are many kinds. This video just details the main grasses a homeowner would likely have for a turfgrass lawn. There are far too many to discuss in a video. Not to mention, they wouldn't apply to many people. Yes, there are selective herbicides that kill weeds but not grass. Then there are non selective herbicides that will kill everything it touches. Yes, clover, crabgrass and other weeds can beat out a grass yard if it has the conditions to thrive and continually goes to seed to spread.
@trevormynatt3466

What I meant was, the opposite, if unwanted grass can take over, can TURF grass that you plant take over a random yard of grasses just by seeding ?
