I cant think of anyone who could have played this role better than Bob Newhart. I always imagine the backstory as the therapist used to be a great therapist with patients who just didn't listen and he just got fed up and went straight to this. The brilliant "we dont go there" suggests this. 😆

This actually worked for me. I had someone tell me over and over "don't worry". I would struggle and tell them all my intrusive thoughts and they would say "don't worry" and I did. Scripture and prayer really helped and watching other people not worried about the things I did and also the quote "thoughts come through your mind like birds. You're only responsible for the ones that stay and make a nest"

MadTV when it first began, was astonishingly insightful and funny. I feel like there was deliberate sabotage of the show because the "insightful" components hit a bit too close to the bone so "viewers" contacted MadTV to request more of; _"he look-a like-a man"._ ...I do agree however that wrestling fans and people who watch cars drive in circles are also up late at night, I just thought that wrestling was on late at night as well. (Edit) I am NOT labeling this particular video clip "insightful". See my other comment elsewhere.

• Therapists charge by the hour. ▪ The goal is to connect why you cannot "Stop it" to events (but mostly environments) in your impressionable years (certainly early childhood, sometimes other periods). ▪ Some people are capable of self analysis but initial guidance is important. Not everyone is suited for self-examination, certainly not narcissists but also others. ▪ Bad influences and bad people blame their victims. Confronting them with the truth can be cathartic for the victim but usually will never change the relationship between the two parties. ▪ People who remain where they grew up are usually the least likely to be exposed to different, (in this case) healthier environments. They usually need more positive guidance. ▪ Many (not all) who choose a career in counseling do so because of past trauma in their own lives. ...Food for thought.

Stop it, accompanied by distracting yourself, is the ultimate cognitive therapy suggestion. The only way out of any bad behavior is to not let your brain and body retrace bad circuitry. No matter how hard it is to distract from a bad course, you can t allow yourself be held a prisoner to previous learnings.
