The School of Life

What often holds us back from taking the initiative is the sense that other people out there must know better than we do. But in a great many cases, there is a more exciting, slightly scary and at heart thrilling idea to discover: that no one really knows. By this we mean that, in unexpected areas, there is no high up authority that can tell us for sure what is going to work or not, what is good or bad, why things are the way they are. Recognition of this can liberate us: we can work it out for ourselves; we can take take our own steps towards making sense of things, we can be original.

It's the only way people can hold on to their sanity. Embracing the complexity and vastness of our world and universe is an enormous burden. People need an illusion of having things figured out so they can live their life in relative peace of mind, without being constantly distraught by the uncertainties of life and the anxiety they bring.

@windrunner9158

Nate Murdoch I personally don’t think that makes them “intelligent”. I think it just means that they have an idea of how much they don’t know, and can therefore come to the logical conclusion that they know very little. As their knowledge grows, so does their feeling of ignorance because for every one thing they learn, they realize there are hundreds of things they don’t know about it. I think it’s less to do with intelligence and more to do with mindfulness. I hope I didn’t come off as too curt, I’d be happy to hear your response :)

I think the trait that one can appreciate how little they know isn't connected to intelligence per se, because it's a matter of hubris or humility, but it does coincide with intelligence, because it's a mindset which allows you to always keep learning more and not set yourself arbitrary boundaries at which you think you know enough and don't need to keep learning.

when I was a kid I had no friends and looked forward to being an independent adult who got everything they wanted from life. now that I'm older (recently 20) I feel like that life was taken from me. like I was robbed from something I deserved and waited so long for. I was sad then and I'm sad now, nothing has changed. I wish I never dreamed of the fairytale life I thought adulthood would be, it hits hard when you know you'll never have that life and that no one has that life. If you're a kid or a teen reading this, don't wait for happiness to come to you, go and find it. It's a sad realization, that you have to live life while you're young. because no one cares when you're older. And no one is happy when you're older.
@DJNHmusic
@DJNHmusic 5 жыл бұрын
You are 20 years old, hardly a time to judge how adult life is yet. I'm 24 and have come to similarly poignant conclusions, but then again I realize that we just have to keep our heads down, be patient and slowly build a life we'll be content with. At 20 years old, I still used to care a lot if others cared or not. With time, you'll learn that this doesn't matter as much either. It matters much more whether you care.

"In How to Be Miserable, psychologist Randy Paterson outlines 40 specific behaviors and habits, which-if followed-are sure to lead to a lifetime of unhappiness. On the other hand, if you do the opposite, you may yet join the ranks of happy people everywhere! There are stacks upon stacks of self-help books that will promise you love, happiness, and a fabulous life. But how can you pinpoint the exact behaviors that cause you to be miserable in the first place? Sometimes when we’re depressed, or just sad or unhappy, our instincts tell us to do the opposite of what we should-such as focusing on the negative, dwelling on what we can’t change, isolating ourselves from friends and loved ones, eating junk food, or overindulging in alcohol. Sound familiar? This tongue-in-cheek guide will help you identify the behaviors that make you unhappy and discover how you-and only you-are holding yourself back from a life of contentment. You’ll learn to spot the tried-and-true traps that increase feelings of dissatisfaction, foster a lack of motivation, and detract from our quality of life-as well as ways to avoid them. So, get ready to live the life you want (or not?) This fun, irreverent guide will light the way." This is the blurb from "How to Be Miserable: 40 Strategies You Already Use by Randy J. Patterson. The CP Grey KZfaq channel put out a video about this book a few days ago. I got a copy of the audio book on Audible and listened to it. For what it's worth, I think you should read it because you sound as if you're on the way to feeling miserable, and you deserve more. Get your hands on a copy of this book, and if you apply his advice, you will find that your life will improve. You want things to change? Then you must change. You are carrying around inside your mind an internal map made up of assumptions, beliefs, and attitudes that will steer you away from from happiness if you follow it. Truthfully, happiness is less reliant on external circumstances than how we think and what we believe. As you put it, things can only get better, and this book will help.

34 and still didnt learn how to bluff to people about a situation that isnt the truth for my benefit. And for the sake of the attracting what you put out into the world, I don't intend ever learning how to either.

Thinking about it, we really are not much different from our past selves. Just us trying to have a living with time and people.

it is true that no one really knows but we do know some things and don't act on the knowledge bc it is more profitable to, say, build a nice city!

We are all missing bits and pieces of wisdom. It is incumbent on each of us, young and old, to understand, to reach out, to attempt to make the world a little bit better for those around us, even if we are a bit daft or slow, or not as “hip” as many are. I simply want those after me to live in a better world than I was raised in. This should be every older person’s goal because there is nothing anyone can say against this, and everyone, young or old, cannot deny as a basic good for all.

You know but you don't. There is always something that can be known that will never be known. People who think they have mastered something and therefore feel superior in some sense, have found hubris at its biggest expression.

Great video as always. But I would like to point out that we do know how to make every city great and every school great. But we choose to organise around systems of competition, not cooperation. "Choose". I say that knowing full well we don't even understand our own capacity, or lack thereof, for "choice". And really, until we answer the question of our capacity to even make free choices, how could we possibly answer anything else with any authority?
