Completely agree, as a casual player my self, I think devs should be focusing their efforts of better training tools and tutorials then compromising their core game. Don't lower the bar for me to come in, help me reach the bar!

Grothe406 yea I agree. Fighting games desperately need character specific tutorials that start with the basics but eventually teach you literally everything. What your character does and doesn’t do best, matchups, what is and isn’t safe on block etc. it would make it easier for a lot more people to be able to get up to an atleast somewhat competitive level.

The problem is that the devs don't understand their own game on a competitive level. They are casuals, too. Despite building the mechanics themselves, the whole of fighting games never been about the developer's intended experience. Even the first combo ever performed was a glitch.

Tekken 4s practice mode had one mechanic Id wish theyd bring back where you have to do a particular move at least ten times or the screen wont advance. Bc its not just being able to do it, but also at the right time.

@@skeetsoldier It's a sad truth that no matter how hard developers try to make a specific sort of competitive game, there will always be exploits that become necessary to succeed at high levels, a lot EXTREMELY esoteric, which means that tutorials, especially character-specific ones, can only ever go so far, but that doesn't trivialize trying. And a lot of them can be and have been adopted as good legitimate mechanics.

I mean look at Tekken 7. It's one of the most complex fighting game engines and yet it still has a lot of appeal to everyday gamers while still having the depth for hardcore players. Many anime style fighters like Blazblue and Guilty Gear and Arcana Heart has ease of play options to go with the incredible depth for those who seek it. We can have both depth and widespread appeal.

I was just going to use T7 as an example. I hear this and that about how "hard" it is... All fighting games have a start. I never understood how Tekken got that rep. It's objectively more complex than some fighters but I don't think that makes it harder. When you go online, most likely you're going to go against people on your level. There's always going to be someone worse and there's going to be a lot of people who are better. I suck overall but Tekken's difficulty is super overhyped to me. It might take more training than other games but yeah... (Also, before you correct me. I'm speaking fun factor not some tourney bs. I'm not looking to enter Evo or to master Tekken)

In fairness, games nowadays have gotten way more complicated and manuals are being beat away, the latter trend I find unfortunate as it makes looking up missed and forgotten basic play information inconsistent. And even older games have had their suggestion snafus such as Sonic 3&K's infamous rocking barrels that accidentally deceive players about how they're supposed to be moved or Super Metroid's crumbling bridge that exists solely to force SOME use of Samus's ability to dash _without_ the Speed Booster. NTM that _holding_ of a button that doesn't clearly apply an effect on its own might not come to a lot of players' minds, which is how running in the old Super Mario Bros. games works, so you had to hope that rental or used copies came with good control explanations of SOME form. That a large portion of those players that HAVE figured out those sorts of things on their own mock those who hadn't shows how much often gets taken for granted in video gaming. And a lot of that complication _is_ fluff. But being unwilling to be complicated does necessarily stifle what sorts of good games can be made, and fluff isn't necessarily bad.

Games in general are way simpler and "user friendly" than games of the past. They just have a shinier coat of paint. That is on purpose and they state this, in order to reach the masses and make people have the pseudo feeling of everyone being on the same playing field. They believe that this drives sales for games, which it does, however, the retention of communities is dwindling, because the hardcore leave the game due to everyone having the same skill gap. So there is no real reason to invest in the game beyond the base experience. Yes luck and chance should play a factor in games, but someone with 200 hours of experience, should not have an even advantage with someone who has ten hours. Personally, I felt the newer myself playing the newer versions of Tekken less and less for that very reasons I stated in this comment.

Characters sells fighting games. Characters more than anything. One of the first thing people look for in a fighting game is if their favorite character is back. MVC:I failed to meet sales expectations is because they thought "functions" could have their skins swapped. Soulcalibur 5 was selling crap because they got rid of and replaces fan favorite characters. How do game developers not realise that characters sell fighting games?

I don't think you can make Fighting Games designed like Normal Videogames while keeping the skill ceiling so high. If like, Batman Arkham had mechanics as demanding as a normal fighting games', reviewers would give it (justified) crud for being a complicated mess that doesn't move naturally that's a mess to control. Fighting games should be designed like Fighting Games... mostly, at least. There's room for the weird Smash or Arms and stuff out there.

@@colmecolwag So, I understand what you're trying to say here. However, (and I'm sorry if this sounds rude) no one said anything about normal video games being designed like fighting games. They only said that fighting games should be designed *similarly* (please pretend that, instead of bold, it's italicized) to normal video games. And just in case anyone reading this doesn't quite understand this quote, what Max was going for was that fighting games are trying to make it easier for Casual/New players (Normies for all you Gamer Meme-Heads out there), but are instead making that game (for lack of a better way to explain this) bland, and not fully fun. And because of this fact, Expert players can basically take hold of all of these new mechanics, and even old mechanics that were left in, maybe even with new changes, and just make them into weapons and using them to kill off all the fun and enjoyment that Casuals are trying to brew for themselves, causing the Experts to just have a big ole Oligarchy over that game's fan/playerbase. Does this mean that that game isn't enjoyable anymore? Not necessarily. It's just that the Casuals will be too scared to play Online or in tournaments bc they feel that the Experts will cut their behinds off, throw them into pots, put a crap-load of seasonings on it, and feed the Casuals their own rectums, causing them to either a) quit doing anything with players with ANY kind of higher skill level than they do, or b) hide in their Mother's basement playing the game by themselves. I have more to say, but I should probably stop, as this is starting to look like some sort of TedTalk or somethin'. Thank you for reading, if you got this far.
@colmecolwag
@colmecolwag 5 жыл бұрын
@@Zangelin Eh, Devil May Cry doesn't really play like a Street Fighter or a Tekken much at all, control-wise. You got attack buttons that mostly make sense and got very specific defined combos (usually), a Gun Button that Guns Well, free open movement, and a lockon...as well as a built in learning curve that gradually introduces new tools as you go along. Just jump into a fighting game, you don't have that flexibility of movement or simple cancels into whatever-the-heck-you-want, you got a more stiff system with way more attack buttons of a vaguer purpose. A fighting game that's built like a character action game...is more like an Arena Fighter, like the Xenoverse or Ultimate Ninja Storm games...which are fun Video Games, but are not exactly a Fighting-ass Fighting Game. Open movement, universal systems, big story modes as you expand your moveset to do Bigger Things. Fun, but not exactly Fighting Game sort of fun.

Well if fighting games really want to pull in more casual players, it's definitely dependant on the content, especially OFFLINE content. Too many fighting games these days are too reliant on online play, 9/10 times me and my friends always skip fighting games if they lack content, especially offline content, and usually wait till the game is dirt cheap, we especially end up waiting for a complete edition or a sale if there's a fighting game that seems to abuse dlc for more content. As for mechanics, the mechanic only need to appeal to casual players, but doesn't need to be overly simplified.

Also what developers and people need to realize is that some fighting are not going to be for everyone. if the person doesnt feel self gratification from getting better through learning the game then there isnt a point in making it easier. One thing I notice from casual players is that they come to fighting games for the button smash experience and rarely care about learning anything about the game mechanics or combo structure.
@kamikeserpentail3778
@kamikeserpentail3778 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah but it's not just about wanting to get better. People button mash partly because a lot of the games are unnecessarily complex. It's difficult to get your character to do simple things and that doesn't feel good. In Smash Bros generally all of the characters have the same inputs. You don't really have one character requiring a Z input, while another only has a backwards charge input. So you learn how one character works, and you can basically control any character. But the lack of complex controls for basic movement doesn't mean there isn't depth and difference between the characters. Sure Up + B is typically a recovery for all characters, but Zelda's teleport and Pikachu's Quick Attack have very different properties that allow them to be used for rather different situations. I just think they can have a high skill ceiling without needing to have a high skill floor.
@kohei6587

Kamike Serpantail I agree with most of what you said and all of it is definitely true. But I still stand, it doesnt matter if the game has a low skill ceiling. If the players are not interested in becoming better and staying with the game. It doesnt matter how much u simplify it for them. I guess I personally enjoy performing or learning hard tech/combos and applying them in a match knowing not many people can perform. I dont care how simple the game is as long as it has depth as u said. Shit I play a lot of fighterz. My friend criticizes me for playing such a simple game, and even though he is right and the game is easy I simply enjoy how fast you have to react to incoming pressure.

The thing I hear the most after ANY fighting game tournament is this one repeated line. "I can't believe he did that. That took so much skill!" Or "What a read! How did he know???" These are because it was difficult. If I can press a button and won not by reads. Not by skill. But by glue eating. That's. Bad. Design.

it’s not as easy as pushing the “make game” button and it certainly can be less work to make a simpler system, but making a game is a big undertaking on any scale. the idea that you have that the devs are lazy is pretty damn backwards. if anything, they’re going the extra mile to make the game appeal to more people who think the game might be too difficult to get into. not saying “why don’t you do it if they’re so lazy”, because that’s a total non-argument, i’m saying that your opinion is probably misguided.

James Downs Are you finding that you accidentally jump when trying to input an up smash? If you’re playing Ultimate, that’s understandable since jumps come out much faster than in previous entries. If this is your problem, you might find success by toggling “tap jump” off in your controls settings. This will make it so that you can only jump with buttons, not the stick, (which might sound hard if you’re used to tap jump, but you might or might not find it worth investing in getting good at button jumping, since it will free you up for inputting aerial attacks. I personally haven’t used tap jump in years.) Perhaps it’s not that you jump accidentally, but rather that you have difficulty inputting a smash input rather than a tilt input. While I would recommend getting the timing down for both since it translates into certain special attacks in other characters, (but you can cross that bridge when you get there,) what you could always do is use the right stick to input smash attacks. Just tap and/or hold the right stick in the desired direction and let go, voila, instant smash attack. You could even use this method if you want to keep tap jump turned on since the right stick won’t make you jump. You can even use the right stick in the air for aerial attacks. As for neutral air? Well, just jump and press A without holding any direction. Can’t really help you much with that one. I realize it can initially feel strange not to press any directions, but you’ll adjust if you practice. :) TLDR: -You can toggle your controls so that the control stick won’t make you jump, -you can use the right stick to do a smash attack, -jump and press A to do a nair.

But in Dragonball FighterZ, everything was on a surface. I could watch it, and understand why something SonicFox or GO1 did was bloody impressive. Still, I have to say that even though the looks is what made me get the game, the mechanics is what made me stay. Dragonball was so easy to pick up to do basic cool shit. To not have to think so hard to get to a mediocre level, it was fantastic. Smash Bros is the best selling fighting game series. It has like 3 spots in the top 5 best selling fighting games. Why? A few reasons. 1. People know Nintendo. Many of them have played at least some of their other games, so they recognize some characters, stages, and items. They were invested even before they played. 2. The variety. A. The characters. Not only is "everyone here" but the characters are vastly different, to keep matches fresh and interesting. How you fight Kirby is very different from how you fight Ganondorf and that is instantly recognized even by new players, Kirby is small, light, and has many jumps, and that all changes everything. B. The stages. Beyond the characters, the stages also have so many interesting things going on, things to interact with. In almost no other fighting game have I actually been interested to see what a new stage would be like, because usually they are all just background that affects nothing. C. Items and rules. There are so many interesting items adding a random element and further changing how the game is played. So many rules customizations. I've had friends who insisted that you need to play Smash Bros with no items, then I introduced them to a rule-set where you start with 10% stamina, 15 lives, and gun items spam like crazy and they said they were going to make that rule-set on their own game at home, because it feels like a completely different game. D. The modes. While Ultimate's single player mode isn't as in depth as Subspace Emissary was, the single player modes in Smash Bros have a lot of variety going for them so even someone not into competition can enjoy the game. You have spirits or trophies to collect, challenging events to try to fulfill, a video editing mode, a stage builder. There's pretty much something for everyone. 3. Low skill floor, high skill ceiling. Nintendo games are great at this. We've all known that little kid who just picks Pikachu and spams Down + B. It is flashy, and it makes them feel good when they send someone flying. It's very easy to get your character to do what you want them to do, no complicated inputs, which translates to people feeling like "hey I can learn this" It isn't hard to block in Smash Bros. But that doesn't mean there is no depth. Perfect shielding is very hard to pull off, and then can be difficult to take advantage of once you've properly executed it. Some attacks have a sweet/sour spot. Knowing that Wii Fit trainer has like 4 god damned i-frames with her up Smash is super subtle, and hard to take advantage of. Even a lot of advanced players may not even know about it if they don't play her (or against her) extensively. A game can be easy to get into, and still have depth to keep them going. A highly skilled player will ALWAYS beat a low skilled player. 4. Risk is rewarded. The game outright encourages you to jump off a cliff to secure a kill. THIS is what makes interesting come backs. You can take a risk to finish your opponent off sooner, I've seen even a few high level games where one player gets that nice bottom of the stage spike and killed their opponent at ultra low percentages... or ones where they died in the attempt. 5. Interaction. When I tried playing Marvel vs Capcom 3, nothing frustrated me more than running into good players who could land complicated combos that nearly took one of my characters out of the match. Combos in themselves aren't bad, what made it feel bad was that there was absolutely NOTHING you could do except hope they dropped it. There are some intense combos in Smash Bros Ultimate, but but true combos aren't all that long or commonplace. The reasons for this are partly because DI and teching. While being beaten to a pulp you have the ability to slightly influence where you are knocked around, which forces your opponent to make a read in order to continue their combo. There are over 5 ways to get back onto the stage, attack on, roll on, jump over, drop and re-enter, and basic climb (and then more character specific ways). So even when your opponent has you in the corner they have to anticipate your next move, make a read, try to lead your decision. While that is true in most fighting games, often they lack the level of verticality and dodging through an opponent that Smash has because they want to reward the player who backed the other into the corner. Killer Instinct's combo breaking also does this, and one of the reasons I really like it.

That game was fine because you weren't limited and you could still do crazy things. But they've just been getting worse with DBFZ, BBCTB, and now GBFV. I feel like I can't do what I should be able to do in those games and that's a horrible feeling. I don't feel that way when playing anything else. I feel like they limit you instead of making things easier.

Then the update comes out , and I was shocked and very disappointed to learn that some of the best combos for my mains I learned like predators gut stab and slam pop up now took 2 bars instead of 1 and really limited my combos, or subs ice rapid stabs in his cryomancer class was now a grab instead of a combo finisher. I also noticed that nrs even went as far as dropping skarlets combo set ups in mk11 and made her slower in the final cut than what she used to be in beta and it's very frustrating to do her combos and sad to see how nrs is really affecting the game by catering to the casual (I'm 1 as well, but I'm still willing to commit to learning characters and get better in fighting games) and not the more advanced and vet players.

A lot of pros in the old days from what I'd read could not do a DP for MONTHS. Its motion is an obvious anachronism of when just executing the move was the reward instead of making good use of it. I think that fighting game tutorials are just crutches. Firstly the devs aren’t psychic enough to know that or make all options are equal so the knowledge they tell you isn’t as helpful to new players. Second it doesn’t teach the mind set. Skull girls doesn’t tell you how important the assist you pick will determine your entire team, just that hey these can extend combos and you can be clever with these. ... how? That info literally decides if I can compete with most people and unless i watch tournaments I’ll never know that big band and Beowulf work great together because of A train. Rev2 never tells you that you should cancel all forward momentum with barriers. Hell no game as of my current knowledge teaches you what jailing is, what meaties are, how to Kara, or the importance of reads and conditioning. These are very important things I’m certain you’ll never learn without the community. I think it’s up to the community as well as the game devs to make it more commonly known that “hey people will help you figure out how to get better at this game you don’t need to just practice in an echo chamber”.

It was the thrill of discovery, shadow combos, slow combos, ultra fast combos and the intricacies of the game play that were the most fun. There are few games these days that excite me the way that old-school fighters once did. That element is missing in today's fighting games. I have yet to play it yet but I hope that Samurai Shodown fits in that niche.

I agree with you, I just started to try to get into fighting games and I'm more driven to Guilty Gear than any casual fighter :P

I think NRS is smart on really capitalizing the players who enjoy a fighting game’s mechanics, but don’t want to compete online. It’s why both Injustice and Mortal Kombat have endless replayable modes with tons of unlocks like Towers and Injustice’s equivalent (Can’t remember the name) to that.

Melty's still my favourite fighting game cause of how fluid movement feels. You can press any button you want and make combos too. They might not be good but it's a combo.

@Prashanth Panicker No, actually. Used to have a lot of trouble finding people to play fighting games with in Melbourne. These days I just watch tournament footage.

For anyone still doubtful about the SFIV example, if you do Solar Plexus into DP with ryu, it does good damage, but you can link a crouch fierce in between. It does a little more damage, but that little more damage isn't what wins you a game. Avoiding that slow-ass solar plexus is what wins you that match. Or look at Evil Ryu's infamous 20 second-long 1 frame link combos. After the second use of bar, your hits don't do like any damage (they do but it's measurable in pixels). That doesn't win you the round. Avoiding his mixups and fireballs does. Do you see my point? 1 frame links are fun, but Hakan is still kinda viable even though all he does is link jabs and air-to-air into Ultra, but that ultra is better used as a counter move.

Killer Instinct suffered being only Xbox/PC, both of which has a tiny player base for fighting games.

Yea I didn't think Xbox was that bad until I saw a event in dbfz and it was giving console rewards and Xbox was at 5k and PS4 at 35k (amount of players needed). Think switch was 1k and PC was 4k lol

Tekken was daunting for me to get into but I really liked watching it so I sat down to learn what I had to like Korean back dashing and learning match ups online and now when I'm playing and I know match ups it feels super satisfying to win and when I rank up, even though I'm only in the green ranks, it's satisfying because it's a symbol of everything I've learned and how much farther I still have to go and I find that that is exciting. And with KOF 14 I've heard lots of good things from people about the gameplay and its got a big roster but I just couldn't get past the visuals of the game so I just never bought it were as KOF 13 I've barely played but the game looks so amazing that I wanted to play it so I bought it. And simplifying fighting games makes them boring to play so then people don't buy dlc, probably the best example of the opposite is marvel 3, game really hard to get into and learn but people kept buying it way after it came out because it was hype to watch and looked really good.
