In NO way is this video meant to be "bashing" or knocking anyone down... as I said in the video - this is something I really struggled with early on! I am wanting to be honest and not beat around a bush on this because I have seen in my own life how negatively impactful it is to consistently leave work unfinished - and I have also seen how much it has improved me to turn that around and work on finishing almost everything I start! Hope this encourages you to finish your music more not only for your own development but for your own happiness!

I think people who produce “beats” will always have the hardest time with these because a lot of the ones that make it are inherently super looped, but they have a vocal/rap on it and that’s a huge difference in how that project goes from a beat to an actual song. My only advice for this is to pick an acapella that you like, and build your music around that. Then you don’t get stuck with 16 bars of a 4 bar loop

I haven't seen the video yet, but just by the title I can tell you, that this is the single biggest problem I am struggling with. And others around me also. Finishing something, at least to a level is important not just in music, but other professions too. And I know, if I finish 20-30 songs, the latter songs are going to be really mature.

Nah man, say it. Who cares what other people think. I feel like you're one of the only real music voices on KZfaq. I really feel like this is a huge portion of the music making mindset. I've been working on a similar problem and what I find is that the mindset that works for me is "taking charge" of my own life. Anything that is put on my plate I tend to treat like a chore, but if I take charge of it and make it my own problem to solve how I think that it should be done makes a huge difference. So I 100% agree with you, music production is really hard, and most of it is mental, not knowledge, equipment, or talent based. It's just experience and problem solving.

Great advice. The title really grabbed my attention. When finishing something for someone else, having a deadline can really force you to just get it done!... When it comes to your own music, I think sometimes people are afraid to pull the trigger and finish a song because they have this constant feeling that it could be better. Maybe this or that should be louder, maybe this harmony can drop out in this spot or whatever. I read somewhere, I think it was an Elvis Costello Biography. He said, " a song is never really finished, it's only recorded at a certain point in time". I thought that was a good one, Remembering that sometimes helps me to just pull the trigger and finish it. Usually after you live with it for a while you start to accept it. Anyway, I made this video a favorite to watch again when I need some motivation.

you're totally right. i have 132 unfinished cubase projects on my harddrive. they're all song ideas i started and never finished. i supposed it would make sense to go through all of them and either finish the songs, even if they're not perfect or delete it... but it's so hard xD - thanks for those words, they hit me spot on.

Another reason for not finishing is just getting bored of the song, melody, harmony etc. that sounded like a great idea just an hour ago. So the challenge is to create a song without listening to it too much. The more you listen to it, the more you can hear to improve it, but the more likely it is to remain unfinished.

Y'know what the funny thing is, I watched this entire video and this can be applied to any form of creativity. I do music and art and I struggle a lot with continuing to do projects because so many of them are "hard" and require "problem solving" of some sort. I am so happy I stumbled across this video because you may have saved me honestly. I think maybe I just need a change of mindset of how I perceive problems and I need to work on my mental health a bit more so that I can more healthily go into the music and art projects that I start. I always had a habit of making songs, but then I sometimes am like... Ugh I don't like how it sounds so then I end up slowly forgetting about it and leaving it on the back-burner and never coming back to it. But for now on I am going to try my best to not do that anymore, and to just imagine how it feels for when I solve the problem. I think that will be the thing that ultimately saves my passion for creativity.

I needed this bro. I've watched a lot of guys try to make these kinda videos but this one spoke to me most clearly. Thank you bro, I've been struggling with mixing and I have "kinda" mixed well a few times but it is hard and i do quit when I don't get my vocals sounding how I want or this snare perfectly sitting and I instantly just stop and then go to restart the process some hours later. I've recently made a song where people are telling me they like the mix and ive never heard that. It was after a big blow up situation after a break up and I told myself I'm finishing the song no matter what and I did and for this first time I'm truly happy with a song. This video just helped to keep me on this track and imma come to back to it everytime I need that little boost🤝

Thanks for this video! As an beginner/intermediate beat maker I was going more w/ 'quantity over quality' mantra, but also leaving tracks unfinished as I also learned more advanced techniques, found better quality sounds & discovered more of the sound/style I wanted to make. Now I feel ready where it's actually worth it to finish out tracks & give each one attention. I like the idea of forming the habit of completing every track. It does seem intimidating but like anything else it should get easier with time and help the overall process and envisioning the bigger picture earlier on in the process. Arrangement, transitions between sections and ear candy are my weaknesses which are all tied into not finishing tracks, but I'm a problem solver :-) a bunch of your videos are really informative as well. Thanks again appreciate the knowledge and boost!

I think we need to caveat this a bit. I have dozens of songs I haven't finished and it's not because I don't want to finish them, it's that I have put a build up and a drop together and decided that I really don't like the sound and moved on to something else. I don't mean quality or it being too challenging, I mean I listened back after a day or so and decided it wasn't a creative idea worth carrying on with. I have also finished dozens of songs. The ideal situation in my mind is to take your advice, but also be able to objectively listen to something and decide whether it's worth continuing with.

I never “finish” because I feel like I don’t have a concrete idea of what finishing is. Ive listened to too many people online with all these crazy rules on what a mix “should” look like, and now I feel like I can’t trust my ears. I’ve been doing this on and off for 10 years and still can’t convince myself that I’m any good at it. Even when actual musicians tell me otherwise. It’s not just music though. I’ve always had this voice telling me I’ll never be worth anything. I’ve always helped people mix their stuff for free because I feel worthless. Instead of all these online tutorials, what I needed was a mentor. Someone that I could build my foundation off of. Instead, all I have is a partner that’s been telling me to “turn it down” for 10 years. And hundreds of unfinished projects. I needed this video. I guess it was never meant to be.

I hear you ... I really do - I was there and I remember in my "early days" watching Recording Revolution or Joe Gilder and feeling pretty stuck even with all the information I was getting. Ultimately - finished is better than perfect. It is SO true. No matter what - the music you finish today will sound different than the music you finish in 1, 2, 5, 10 years. If you continue forcing yourself to get to that finish line - even if it is NOT perfect (there is no such thing, by the way) then you will learn so much faster and actually see progress. Finished does not mean perfect. Finished is when you decide it's done. Trust me - music I made a decade ago - I would do it WILDLY differently today and I listen and think "Yeah that kinda sucked" but ... it was finished. And that finishing helped me to get to a place to where I now look back on well over 1,000 songs I've finished and I can really see the progress that happened. I would strongly recommend you go find your favorite 10 songs that are unfinished... and get it done. Finish them. Close the book. And then you can move on and start forming that habit of finishing. If you don't know how to do something - then seek that knowledge, but the truth is that there are still things I dont know. I don't know everything and I'm still learning - which means we are all on this trajectory of creating imperfect music... and that's part of the beauty. Keep your head up, my friend.

For me, I only finished songs that I had to. Either they were paid work, or they were for uni. That’s why I’m doing a masters in production even though I’ve got a degree in it. To push myself. Be accountable to something. Because I am very rarely happy with the final thing. I just run out of time and have to put it out. I go back and listen and actually like what I hear but at the time I never like it. And I’ve been paid in the industry to make music on multiple occasions lol

Hey Nathan, after finishing this video and looking back on the “learn to produce 10x faster” vid, I’m sorta confused with the quality vs quantity comparison with finishing songs. As someone’s who’s a beginner with production, what if I finish a song for the sake of finishing and move on to a new song while not being satisfied with the finished song? Should I still move on to a new song or finish the other song until I’m fully satisfied (which can take some time and goes back to the quantity vs quality question)? I hope this makes sense haha

Delete the word Problem and replace it by the word Challenge! Hmm, in my experience starting out (I talking late 90's early 00's) I was always writing songs (just the basics on acoustic guitar) and I usually worked on 4 or 5 songs at the same time, developing my ideas. But when recording songs, I took a totally different approach: I only started a new (demo) recording after my previous one was finished. This kept things organized. The inspiration side of songwriting can be quite chaotic, but for the recording process it's good to have a method to tame the madness.

Making music is a blast when the daw isn’t clunky and works at the speed it should . I write and finish songs weekly but not in Logic which has no drag and drop an antique browser and editor and seems to be only useable with two machines for touch that saves a ton of time wasted with a daw on a desktop . I’m forcing myself to learn Logic on a computer when I should be writing in it like I do in iOS with a daw like cubasis or Korg gadget or a mastering app like final touch which is amazing and intuitive and useful and gives excellent results . I decided to get a computer to try and use Logic with touch and that was my real mistake. I sent a letter to Tim Cook who knows . I won’t quit but this is ridiculous in this day and age .👽

Thank you for this insightful video. The concepts apply to life in general, not just music. The world has massive problems. All kinds of things are done, but, real root cause analysis and solutions are not really sought. If society could somehow apply your suggestions to the issues the world faces, the world might become a better place. Sorry, I am a retired engineer who is exploring innovations in music beyond just trying to make a living in music. Those innovations are tied to the issues the world is facing. Perhaps I should have constrained my answer to just music but, upon reflection, I feel a moral imperative to make this post instead. Thanks again.

What makes me not want to FINISH a song: Deciding what instrument to use during a verse (would I use a sampled piano or a guitar?) or the chorus (which type of synth sound (eg a vibraphone, koto, steel drum, violin, flute, calliope, Moog lead, etc)) if the song is an instrumental number If the song is a vocal number, I’ve got to decide who is going to be the singer or the rapper How I can structure the song after the bridge section When to place an interlude like section Deciding how long an instrument solo would be (I know the first solo would occur after the second chorus or the bridge)

This is literally me - actually I have a question on this - What if you are writing a song using your DAW and get writers block during the process and stop recording? Any tips on overcoming that?
@vietnammg
@vietnammg Жыл бұрын
In my exprience the 99% of writer blocks come from the lack of inspiration. The current material is too dry for the streams to flow. You will have to innovate, try it on instrument you haven't heard it on before (play it don't midi edit shit in), alter the lyrics to make it more meaningful, alter the chords (Dmaj to Dadd9), alter the tempo. etc.. You have to also temporarily leave the DAW and everything being made on it to get a fresh idea.

I read this upon first glance as "NEVER stop finishing songs"... lol, very different message. I'm like, kind of good advice... don't let you old ideas die in the purgatory of your audio memos.

Also, restrict yourself from starting a new project until finishing the last one(s). The unfinished tracks just pile up Edit: As one approach worth trying for people struggling with the issue. But sometimes it is worth stepping away and working on something new or different as well

This is good for those who really need that extra layer of discipline almost "restricted" on them, but I do think having 4-6 projects rolling at the same time that are all in different stages is great (for me). I find that it helps give me that breather while still having other things to work on. But... I finish all of them. Heck, AT THIS MOMENT I have one that is in the very early stages of production that I'm in a bit of a wrestling match with - but tomorrow morning, it's on my docket to get over it and get it past that stage. But I still have other projects I'm working on to help give me that success feeling. Like I said - do something that gets you FEELING good - and for me - it's usually another song that is at a different stage that I temporarily work on to get feeling good and then I come back to the struggle to knock it out.

Great point. I might be an exception. But, I am a retired engineer who is doing music for fun. I do not seek a career in music. If that happens, it will be an unexpected bonus. My main purpose is to explore new sounds, create new instruments, discover new ways of doing things. I keep breaking Logic Pro because I push its limits. When attempting things like what I am attempting, failures are expected. Projects are for later, after the inventions and explorations are completed. Therefore, I have hundreds of 20 second explorations. On one hand, they are finished. But they are not finished musical projects that are commercially viable. We all have our unique goals. All the best to you. Thank you for this thread. It is meaningful.

Yeah I agree. That comment was more for people who really have a bad habit of opening a new project constantly and giving up on a previous one, like myself But yes, otherwise, it shouldn’t be a problem if it doesn’t become one. Theres def value in moving on to something else as well. It’s more the “why” that should be considered. Not so good if a new project is a way to run away from the challenge of fixing/improving an existing one

100%, what else would help, is some kind of “definition of readiness”, as at some point you need to stop doing these improvements. And to me there are still exceptions, sometimes you just know, that what you are doing is actually not worth your time, but it’s more like a quality control on early stages.

Oh yeah you're right. Maybe there's a point where we're doing too much and we're adding on improvements that don't really need to be there.

Dude I suck. I went into this in a great place and have got to a point where I can no longer come up with anything and im not writing songs. It's only been about 6 or 7 years. But on the other hand my productions itself are way way better.

How would someone with little music theory comprehension, take a riff, that they came up with and turn it into a song? Any thoughts?
