Thanks for watching! 🐶 How does your pup do on the leash?

I haven’t seen this video when I got my puppy. My chihuahua (16 weeks) wasn’t scared of the leash but confused. In 2 days he was walking perfectly next to me on his own. Wearing a harness too. And a winter coat sometimes since it’s cold in NJ. Idk maybe it’s me but he just got it. I never pulled, I’d show him let’s go with the body language. He’s very calm, most of the time he’s a confident puppy. Thank you for your videos, you quickly became my favorite KZfaq dog trainer although others are not bad, I like your energy better than let’s say Zak George. I watch his videos too but enjoy yours more.

I love your videos but wish you would show with a dog, and not with a easy dog one that is active.

Thanks for the suggestions. We are filming new videos for the next version of the course now, including using dogs that are not trained.

I have a 19th month old Boxer who is totally obsessed with the leash. She is oblivious to anything going on around her & as she's getting stronger i see it as an accident waiting to happen. It is so frustrating she will sit at the door before we leave & sit again outside the door before we leave, but as soon as we leave that's it a constant struggle. I feel i've tried everything, she's not treat orientated outside. Even in the park she wants to jump & bite the leash. It's a complete game to her ,ignoring her doesn't help she just jumps at me to pick the lead up. She is a good loving dog who understands ,sit ,down, stay etc her recall is good it's just this lead thing which has bought me to tears as i would love to have a nice long walk with her daily. Also by the time she does calm down she is exhausted panting & her eyes are bloodshot. I thought she would grow out of it by now but it's relentless,Help!!!

It sounds like you'll want to do a lot more work on leash skills inside before she gets to go out. If she's not taking treats, she's not learning anything new and the environment is too exciting for her. You can pair your leash work inside with some exposure sessions outside, teaching her to remain calm when she's in exciting environments. Due to her age and how long she's been practicing this behavior, it will be best to find a positive reinforcement trainer to help you. Here's a directory in case you need it! www.ccpdt.org/dog-owners/certified-dog-trainer-directory/

I feel your frustration as I am experiencing the same. I have a 4 month female Cane Corso that does the same. She starts with a leash then moves on to my arm. She is fine one minute then it all begins. She is to the point where I can only take her out to relieve herself. She has been walking since 10 weeks but that aggression started at 3 months. She is treat oriented but once she is in her frenzy it is so difficult to snap her out of it. I’m helpless and frustrated . All I do is read up on it and watch videos. I have tried everything 😢😢😢

Our dog is 10 months old, she’s a Pitador and 50 pounds. She goes wild on her walks. Initially it’s fine, but she goes from zero to 2000 really quickly with over stimulation on her walks. Then she starts to jump, bite and tug on the leash. It happens more and more the longer we walk.

It sounds like shorter walks or walks in locations away from pople and other dogs would be best. Take a look at this video on decompression walks - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o6qjq6imx8ype4U.html

Thank you for another great video and topic for training. We love your videos so much and look forward to them. 😎 Our 15 month old goldendoodle puppy does well on the leash, but does sometimes pull when she is on walks with us and sees/hears/senses something interesting (other dogs that are friends, neighbors walking/riding bikes, familiar family members/friends). Our puppy feels very comfortable on the leash even if we let family members/neighbors/friends (who she knows/trusts) hold the leash and walk with her. Then sometimes she gets really close to us if there is something scary (other dogs she does not know/like, unfamiliar people, big trucks, school buses).

Tommi gets super excited outside and will hold her leash. When she looks at me, I tell her you're not old enough to walk on your own. She will let go. I have found that during various times of day, she will hold it, and others she'll want to go jump in the decorative grasses. I take the boys out first and check the decorative grasses for anything that could harm any of them. Once, I did find a glass bottle in it. Codi did look at me and smile when I removed it. I said it was safe to jump on and off, and he went with Felix following. Tommi holds the keash for about the first 3 minutes outside, and once she jumps in grasses, she's fine and doesn't hold the leash any longer. How can I support her becoming comfortable outside faster? We have been going outside since about 6 weeks when she could get past the first tree, we do walk around the block, by the car wash, near a restaurant, near a pet grooming store. And she and others aren't reactive they stop and smell the food, or stop and smell the groomers and keep going. My favorite is when they hear sirens, they stop, sit, and watch the lights go by. Only once have they howled. I joined them, and the pups have me side eyes like you are off key. LOL

We can't really rush the training process faster than our dogs can learn the new skills. It could be too stimulating of an environment for Tommi to get comfortable. We don't recommend neighborhood walks for dogs who are still lacking confidence. Taking Tommi to a quiet area with no cars, dogs or people would be good!

Thank you@@HowToTrainADreamDog that's what I was thinking, similar to how I help Codi build his confidence.

I have a three year old male goldendoodle. He is very reactive with the leash. It is cute when he runs around with it in my yard but he will still bite the leash and jump often. I assume this is because of my lack of consistency in walking him. I also wonder if getting him a harness or different type of leash would help. I used a gentle leader for my previous dog but my current dog won't stay still most of the time. I don't think I could be quick enough to get the gentle leader on him. Thank you.

Tools do not help our dogs learn new things, training does! It's never too late to teach him how to walk nicely on a leash. You'll find some awesome games for that in our online course. You'll start working on these games at home with high value treats. Slowly he'll get enough practice that he can have good leash manners when you are outside! Here's the course if you want to get started! www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/

I still don’t have a plan. No fence, (2) 11-week old mini golden doodles. I’m getting back fastening harnesses. So just that and desensitize them slowly while not outside ? I need them to stay out with me in the grass to do their business but they are distracted by biting the leash and clasp. I’m taking them out separate (or at least holding one at a time) bc they will just play with each other. Yes they are litter mates and we’re already in love with both so here we are. Lol.

You're on the right track with using a leash and a back clip harness. Taking them out separately (not just holding them separately) will be important so they don't get distracted and learn to focus on you. You'll get there, it just takes awhile (longer for littermates!).

How about when the puppy starts picking up leaves or rocks? I let my puppy roam while on a leach.
@HowToTrainADreamDog
@HowToTrainADreamDog Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you'll want to find a place that has fewer leaves and rocks for right now. We recommend parking lots or empty sports fields. Then you can begin work on leave it and drop it training before you go back to those areas with tempting things on the ground!

Hopefully you got some good information in this video! It will be important to teach Creed that he doesn't get to greet everyone he sees. You can do this in a way that eliminates frustration when out on a walk.

My 6 month old female corgi nips my hand in a not playful way when i attach the leash, I am afraid she is going to actually bite me one day. She also pulls and bites at tthe leash and my hand while walking

It sounds like she needs a little more work on tolerating the leash. It's also important to note any negative experiences she has with the leash on (human putting pressure on the leash, not allowing for lots of sniff breaks, etc) and work on different interactions.

Have you been able to do some training with her to create a positive association with it? She might need a little extra time to love it before she's actually using it.
